The Mitchell Report: NFL ratings and a boring Champ

Thoughts on the sports world I can't share in a 5 minute sportscast. Some Triangle news. Some not.
Jimmie Johnson has all but locked up another NASCAR championship with one week to go in the season. If he wins it will be his sixth Sprint Cup in the last eight years. You have to wonder at this point if the sport starts the year thinking "anyone but the 48".
I like Johnson. He's been a nice guy to deal with in many of the NASCAR events I've covered over the years, but the guy is simply boring. He's a little like Bill Belichick driving a car. Belichick can get away with his personality because he has players to make up for it. Jimmie is by himself, ready to give a cliche answer and move on to the next race like a machine.
That is a proven formula to win a lot of races, make a lot of money and win a bunch of titles, but he is far from beloved.
One Sprint Cup title for Dale Earnhardt Jr. would be so much better for the sport than 6 more for Johnson. It leaves me wondering if Johnson is putting together the least celebrated dynasty in the history of sports. I enjoyed when Brad Keselowski won it last year and drank just a little too much of his sponsor's product in victory lane. He showed some personality! We can all look forward to another corporate celebration out of the 48 team at Homestead.
It is no secret that the NFL has been getting monster ratings for years. WRAL benefits from this on both CBS and FOX. People are watching and they are not going to stop watching. I, like many ratings geeks, was curious to see how the NFL would do this past Thursday up against two very good college football games. All were on cable, so it was a pretty fair game. The Redskins against the Vikings drew a 5.4 rating. That beat Oregon/Stanford which drew a 4.1 and killed Baylor/Oklahoma which drew a 1.5. I thought the Oregon game had a chance to win, given the mediocrity of the NFL game....nope. Just another reminder of the extreme popularity of this game. There isn't a sport that can touch it right now and I don't see a challenger any time soon.
- Glad I didn't say too much about the Dolphins mess last week on the "Mitchell Report". I thought it was weird then, and it's only gotten progressively weirder . I am really not sure who is "wrong" here. It's just an overall sad story.
-Tim Tebow has hired an agent and apparently is looking into college TV jobs. I'm not sure how good he is going to be at this. Interested to see.
Only one thing to pass on this week and it's so entertaining it can stand alone. You are not allowed to toss a football during a Chargers tailgate. Try it? Get fined .
