The Mitchell Report: The BCS and NFL Bullying?
Posted November 3, 2013
Thoughts on the sports world I can't share in a 5 minute sportscast. Some Triangle news. Some not.
Have you taken a look at the BCS ? I mean a real look. This week coming up is absolutely huge for the remainder of the college football season. We currently have 5 unbeaten teams. On the schedule this week:
Baylor (7-0) vs Oklahoma
Oregon (8-0) vs Stanford
Alabama (8-0) vs LSU
If all of these teams win, and continue to be undefeated, there is a very good chance we see an absolute mess in the final year of the BCS. Hard to see how even a playoff would fix this this year. FSU has Wake Forest, Syracuse, Idaho and Florida with an ACC title game. Do you see them losing? I don't. Ohio State has Illinois, Indiana and Michigan with a Big Ten title game. Again, I am not seeing the loss. So if you hate the BCS, you should be rooting for Baylor, Oregon and Alabama this week. I would love to see 5 undefeated teams. What fun!
It's been a while since I have read something as weird about sports as what is going on with the Miami Dolphins right now. In a nutshell, if you are not following this, starting right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team due to apparent "bullying" from a teammates. Part of this goes back to last summer when he was asked to provide $15,000 for a trip to Las Vegas for his teammates. According to ESPN, he just gave up the money and didn't go on the trip to "avoid backlash". It's really hard for me to imagine a guy getting to that level of football and being susceptible to bullying. It seems skin is thickened from high school in that sport. That's why I am really interested to see what happens here and what is proven. I also wonder if more players from other teams will speak out against this kind of behavior. Hard to tell what exactly is going on here. Either way, it's really bad for the Dolphins.
-According to Aaron Fitt from "Baseball America" the Division- 1 baseball committee is very likely to switch to flat-seam balls in 2015. They'll also study minor league ball. This would seem like a good idea for the sport given the lack of offense in the CWS this year.
-Really bad weekend for ACC football players. Wake loses Michael Campanaro to a broken collarbone for 4-6 weeks. Miami running back Duke Johnson is out for the year with a fractured ankle. Don't even want to know how badly the Seminoles will beat Wake on Saturday.
