The Mitchell Report: The BCS and NFL Bullying?

Posted November 3, 2013

Thoughts on the sports world I can't share in a 5 minute sportscast. Some Triangle news. Some not.

Have you taken a look at the BCS ? I mean a real look. This week coming up is absolutely huge for the remainder of the college football season. We currently have 5 unbeaten teams. On the schedule this week:

Baylor (7-0) vs Oklahoma

Oregon (8-0) vs Stanford

Alabama (8-0) vs LSU

If all of these teams win, and continue to be undefeated, there is a very good chance we see an absolute mess in the final year of the BCS. Hard to see how even a playoff would fix this this year. FSU has Wake Forest, Syracuse, Idaho and Florida with an ACC title game. Do you see them losing? I don't. Ohio State has Illinois, Indiana and Michigan with a Big Ten title game. Again, I am not seeing the loss. So if you hate the BCS, you should be rooting for Baylor, Oregon and Alabama this week. I would love to see 5 undefeated teams. What fun!

Dolphin Mess

It's been a while since I have read something as weird about sports as what is going on with the Miami Dolphins right now. In a nutshell, if you are not following this, starting right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team due to apparent "bullying" from a teammates. Part of this goes back to last summer when he was asked to provide $15,000 for a trip to Las Vegas for his teammates. According to ESPN, he just gave up the money and didn't go on the trip to "avoid backlash". It's really hard for me to imagine a guy getting to that level of football and being susceptible to bullying. It seems skin is thickened from high school in that sport. That's why I am really interested to see what happens here and what is proven. I also wonder if more players from other teams will speak out against this kind of behavior. Hard to tell what exactly is going on here. Either way, it's really bad for the Dolphins.

Quick Hits

-According to Aaron Fitt from "Baseball America" the Division- 1 baseball committee is very likely to switch to flat-seam balls in 2015. They'll also study minor league ball. This would seem like a good idea for the sport given the lack of offense in the CWS this year.

-Really bad weekend for ACC football players. Wake loses Michael Campanaro to a broken collarbone for 4-6 weeks. Miami running back Duke Johnson is out for the year with a fractured ankle. Don't even want to know how badly the Seminoles will beat Wake on Saturday.

Worth Reading

The NY Times with an interesting story about coverage of post-championship celebrations and how they have changed.
Loved this story about two college runners. Talk about sportsmanship!

I'd say your attitude demonstrates why bullying is such a problem in our schools.

Sure I do. More evidence of certain players (rooks) getting played by veterans. So far, Martin is claiming he got bullied, had to pay huge tabs, etc. Shocker! I think I'll wait for the investigation to be completed before assuming too much. And yes, I do think it's funny that a 300 pound lineman would walk around & tell others he was being bullied. It's the NFL, deal with it. If the part about the racist texts is true, Incognito should be suspended for that. But the same rules need to apply to ALL players when that sort of thing happens.

Speaking of clues, weren't you the guy who thought Chipper was just an average player? I'm still laughing over that one.

I'm guessing you don't have a clue about what is going on here.

"Too funny". Really? So, if you were the victim of extortion of $15K, you'd just keep your mouth shut and keep meeting the extortion demands? Would you teach your children to keep their mouths shut if they were being bullied and robbed of their lunch money? And if they told you, would you keep your mouth shut about it?

It sounds as if the Dolphins have a systemic problem that goes beyond the intimidation of one player by the veterans on the team. They are going to have to clean house.

We don't have all the information about the possibly bullying in Miami. I have a feeling this may be legit bullying. Strange? yes. Impossible? Don't think so. I'll wait and see.

I'd love to see FSU win out and play in the BCS Championship game against Alabama, but FSU's SOS will probably keep that from happening.

Love that story about the runners who cared more about integrity and honesty than winning the race. Shame on the officials who didn't place the ropes in the right place. I remember several years ago when the Raleigh marathon had issues with some runners running off course.

An NFL lineman getting bullied? Too funny! Bet somebody wasn't getting it done and was about to take a seat on the bench. Don't think I would have told the others about the bullying stuff. Besides, if they were doing things to get under his thin skin, he should have dealt with it on the field opposed to whining about it. He's probably done in the NFL.
