The Mitchell Report: Ticket prices and the color blue

Posted August 25, 2013

Thoughts on the sports world I can't share in a 5 minute sportscast. Some Triangle news. Some not.

Happy 1 year Birthday to "The Mitchell Report". I'm almost as excited about this as the N'Sync reunion. Really.

HD tv is awesome and it's hot outside

Virginia Tech is in serious jeopardy of losing its home game sellout streak. The Hokie program is very proud of this. They have an ACC-Best 93 game streak dating back to the 1998 season. It seems even Hokie fans enjoy the comfort of the couch, a cold beer and the HD tv. That, and tickets are pricey. This is nothing new. Fans have been trending this way for YEARS, but when it starts to hit schools with tradition of selling out, you know there's a serious issue. It's hard to find a solution to this problem as schools continue to raise prices and TVs get better. Dollar beer games? Anyone?

Tickets are expensive!

While we are on the subject of going to games, ever wonder what the most expensive college football ticket it? Forbes helped us out with a  list this week. Not a huge surprise that Notre Dame tops the list. That stadium still has a serious tradition factor to it. I'm no Notre Dame fan, but that's on my bucket list. NC State is the only ACC school on the list with an average ticket price of $118. That's definitely a win for the Pack.

No blue for you

So Urban Meyer isn't allowing NFL scouts to wear blue when they are on the Ohio State campus because that is a "Michigan color". I love rivalries. I love silly stuff about rivalries like stealing of mascot heads. This, is just kind of stupid. I understand colors are a big deal to folks. Trust me, I could write a book with the amount of e-mails from people I've gotten over the years. "You were wearing red, you are CLEARLY a State homer." "Mandy looooves to wear her Duke blue."...I assure you, I choose clothes based on if I like them, not if they match the color of your team. I am assuming the same goes for the NFL scouts. The guys are professionals who are doing their jobs and they get roped into a game for Urban and his players. You want to make this a rule for fans at practice? Awesome. The scouts? Come on...

Your guide to Columbia

Instead of the "Worth Reading" section this week I will give you a short guide to Columbia if you are planning to make the trip to the game this week. I worked there for 3 years, so I know the city.

**Restaurants: Pawleys Front Porch--Awesome burgers. My favorite spot in the city. Yesterday's--Good southern food. Mr. Friendly's --Higher end southern food.

**After the game: Stick to the Vista unless you are a college student. 5 points is for coeds.

**Traffic on game day will be very very very bad, and the city has a bad habit of letting trains park in the middle of the road for about 30 minutes making it a mess. Plan to leave early.

Good points. I would love to go to more games at VT. However, it's a 5 hour drive and we usually have to spend the night. They increase motel rates almost e times over during football season. That's a reason why I have two pretty large flat screens.

there is something to be said about watching the game on a couch with instant reply, pause, bathrooms, access to other games, etc. However, for my money, you can't beat or even replicate the atmosphere for a college game. I've been to a couple of NFL games and those tickets for big markets can start at over $300. You can get a whole season for the area teams for a little more. I imagine when I start to incur more expenses I'll have to cut season tix, but right now, Tailgating and college football is worth it

That doesn't leave many other color options. Even green is taken by the Irish fans. So what is left? Fuchsia? Chartreuse? I think Mandy might have to go with Gray or Tweed.

  • RD28327 Aug 26, 2013

Maybe Mandy needs to wear dark brown or chartreuse on game days. Perhaps back away from any shade of blue, red, purple, black or gold. Maybe even orange, garnet or burgundy. Just a thought. :-)

the price of 4 tickets + minimum donation + seat backs + parking + food has gotten pretty high.

the ones fortunate enough to be able to afford such frivolities should be extremely thankful that they can still do so, especially in today's economy...i know i feel truly blessed to be able to watch my alma mater on saturdays in the fall (and the occasional thursday).

even though i could watch in the comfort of my house, the price to see the games in person is worth it because i avoid getting migraines from not being able to verbally get rid of my stress and frustration through cheering and yelling.

    Hey Mandy,

I think that the major part is the economy. You have to take into account that the Unemployment/Underemployment rate is around 9.5%. That is a lot of people not working or not making enough to get by. I saw the Bureau of Labor statistics report on Fox Business last week that showed of the 953,000 jobs created this year that 731,000 of those jobs are part-time. Only 222,000 are full-time. No one has any disposable income to pay the rising prices as family incomes shrink. I think that would be your answer. If the economy were back to a 3% unemployment rate with the overwhelming majority of those jobs being full time then I think we might not be seeing this.

If my wife worked full time, we could travel out to Greenville to catch my alma mater (ECU Pirates) and we could go to see some games at my wife's alma mater (UNC). The problem is 2 adults and 2 children x $65 a ticket, not to mention concessions, parking and gas. We are looking at spending $350-400 just to go see a game and not buy any game day stuff. I think this is the reason. Here is the link to the article below.

Even though there is an edit button, it only works on news articles and smack talk forums. Columns like this don't allow edits for some reason.

Ken just edit that post and it will fix it anywhere it is quoted.

  • Ken D. Aug 26, 2013

I hate that you can't edit posts made to columns like this. I didn't mean to make some sort of statement when I said "Wolppack" - it was just a typo.

I'm surprised the IRS hasn't Ken. They sure are closing every loophole to small businesses in existence. :(
