The Mitchell Report: Winston, Manziel and a big fine

Posted January 5

Thoughts on the sports world I can't share in a 5 minute sportscast. Some Triangle news. Some not.

Winston and Mack

Mack Brown got another big smack on the way out the door this week. Jameis Winston talked again about how much he dreamed of going to Texas when he was a kid. He was on the podium at the National Title game, after winning a Heisman trophy and once again told the story of how Brown and Texas wouldn't take his calls. I know Mack is known as an awesome guy in the business and many people were sad to see him go. This was a perfect example of something he missed while in Austin. Texas should never have any issues getting the most talented guys on to campus. Let's see how Charlie Strong does now. It was time for a change.

Manziel

Speaking of guys Mack missed on: Johnny Manziel. I got a chance to see him in person for the first time during Duke's game. He is way better than I thought. It's not just how elusive he is. The guy is super accurate with the football. Add that scrambling quality and he's almost unreal on the field. If I was an NFL team, I would spend a high pick on Manziel. Seeing him in person completely changed my mind. He's a talent and I think that is going to work at the next level.

Panthers vs Niners

Remember week 9 of the NFL season when we all were saying the Panthers run would be "for real" if they could beat San Francisco? They did. It was a close one, but it got most of us thinking this Carolina team could really get to the playoffs. We get to see that match-up again this week . I never know how I feel about BYE weeks during the playoffs. The Niners won an emotional game at Green Bay. They have some playoff momentum now. That will help them in Charlotte. On the other hand, the Panthers got to rest and relax while their opponent was playing in sub zero temperatures in Green Bay. I think overall this is a better match-up for the Panthers than the Eagles would have been. Can't wait for Sunday!

Quick Hits

**A year after making the run to the Final Four, Wichita State is not letting up. The Shockers are 15-0. They haven't played the best competition yet, but it looks like they will be a force in March once again.

**Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was fined 50k for NOT talking. It's a little known rule in the NFL that the league requires players to talk to the media. It's part of the job and the reporters, for the most part, respect that. Lynch ditched his duty all season and the NFL finally got word of it. Wonder if it was worth the 50k not to answer a few questions?

Charlie Strong is not the answer for Texas. They made a real big mistake here.

Strong's credentials are a whole lot better than Mack Brown's when Mack took the job.

Solid information Mandy. Mack surely lost 2 great QB's when he didn't snag Winston and Manziel. Manziel will hopfully mature and do a quality job in the NFL. He has all of the skills to excel.

Really happy that the Panthers are playing at home. Advantage. Getting Smith and a few others back is a huge plus. I believe that the defense will come through again.

Yes, it was worth $50,000 to Lynch to not answer a few questions - like it would be worth 50 cents to me to not have to go to some meaningless weekly meeting. He obviously had his reasons to not want to talk to any "sports writers". Why talk to someone who, instead of talking x's and o's, talks about calls not being taken, and whether or not you gave an interview to a vulture.

Manziel will have to lose his whinny disposition in the NFL. He is a great player but that... View More

Cam Newton had that type of disposition for much of his rookie season. But then one of the veteran offensive linemen pulled him aside and told him that his disposition affects all of the team. Newton accepted the admonishment and grew up.

There is hope for Manziel. We know he talks with Newton. Maybe, just maybe, he can get there. I wish Manziel well.

    Mandy,

Fine article. However, since you were covering the event, you probably did not see all the actions of Drama King Mr. Football.

Being passionate about winning is commendable and his teammates said he was really hyped up....Hopefully for A&M WINNING....not padding his NFL Draft resume.

Then, it seemed, as I and now others saw, that he is a little "overwhelmed". His body language was clear. He or maybe the team was not winning. He sat, for the most part, on the bench and sulked and got teary eyed. He berated his receivers.

I wonder is his soon to be agent was feverishly texting his parents and they were trying to get word to STOP THE DRAMA. At the end, his persona on the bench was that of a leader. Obviously the team improved....which I think is due to Duke's just "running out of gas" rather than Johnny's prowess or the A&M juggernaut.

I am glad that OTHERS see how a REAL NFL QB behaves....we only have to look at Philip or Russell to see that.

Johnny has all the On-Field skill set....but he has to be a Leader as well as a Team Member. I hope that his psyche can be adjusted so that he can function in both capacities...

Right now, I don't see that and it will be interesting to see if the Pro Scout community "discounts" this first half bench performance or if it costs him.

Manziel will have to lose his whinny disposition in the NFL. He is a great player but that attitude, especially since he shows it on almost every play, will have to go.

  • innocent bystander 3 Jan 6, 8:46 a.m.

Duke has one of the weaker defenses that aTm has faced all year, so of course Manziel looked impressive in the chicken bowl. If Mandy had seem him play in their last two SEC conference games against LSU and Mizzou she'd be saying, "Johnny Who?"

I'm not saying the guy doesn't have some amazing and unique talent. He's more fun to watch than just about any college player I can think of. But that doesn't always translate well into the NFL. I like Manziel but I don't think we'll be seeing him vaulting over any defenders in the NFL without him coming up as a soprano.

The NFL QB position is perhaps the most important position in all of team sports. Drew Brees and Russell Wilson prove that there is a place in the NFL for Manziel's talents.

However, Manziel will have to grow up quickly. He will be a boon or bust. I don't think there will be any middle ground for him.

Great article, Mandy. I wanted the team that would be "easier" for the Panthers to beat to win the Packers/Niners game; not sure that's the case with the Niners winning. The Panthers will have their hands full for sure.

I'm not a fan of Manziel, but I can't deny his talent.

I don't know how Sexton manages to walk the tightrope of representing so many coaches and players, but he seems to thrive in that environment without needing a safety net.

Not sure why a country would want to host the Olympics; the cost overrides the prestige IMHO. The recent bombings make security the biggest concern, and Putin's overspending on roads, trains, and venues will look like a very poor decision if the athletes and spectators can't be kept safe.
