Trying to figure out ACC basketball

Posted January 24, 2013

Florida State won the ACC championship game last year and Miami currently leads the ACC with a 5-0 record. That's what ACC officials thought could happen in football but BASKETBALL?? It's a sign of the times of equality.

NC State

State was the preseason pick to win the ACC with the preseason player (CJ Leslie) and freshman of the year (Rodney Purvis). They certainly have the talent to win the league but there are a puzzling team. When engaged, they are fantastic but there are too many times when defensively they just look disinterested. Road losses at Maryland and Wake Forest have the 4-2 Wolfpack still in the strike zone. But if they can't win AT Maryland and Wake, how will they fare at North Carolina, Duke, Virginia and Florida State? The good news for Pack fans, they play Miami one time this year and it's at home on February 2. But first, they have that little get together on Saturday. ESPN's Game Day crew is in town and so is North Carolina, a team that has beaten the Wolfpack 13 straight times. "Ten hut!!!"

Twice the Blue Devils have been ranked number 1 in the nation and twice they have been beaten sitting atop the national poll. The first time they were ranked was deserving. They are not the top ranked team without Ryan Kelly, sporting a 1-2 record without the senior tri-captain. The Massacre at Miami was so bad that the coaching staff just sat there in silence. Believe me, if that highly emotional staff sits there like they are in a church pew, you know the explosion will come at practice. Contrary to a national radio report from Dan Patrick, Duke officials say they did not practice after they got back from Miami.

North Carolina

Early on Tar Heel Coach Roy WIlliams couldn't get what they worked on in practice to translate into the game. That is changing. It sure looks like Carolina is becoming more and more stable on the basketball court. After an 0-2 start in league play, the Heels reeled off 3 in a row and are not tied with Duke for third in the ACC. Reggie Bullock and James Michael McAdoo are playing like they were expected to play. PJ Hairston has been a big boost off the bench. Another major reason for improvement for the Tar Heels is the play of their freshmen and the defining of their roles. Defend and rebound for Joel James and Brice Johnson. Create problems with your athleticism for JP Tokoto. Point guard Marcus Paige is finding his comfort zone handing out 21 assists in the last 4 games with 11 turnovers. He is learning when and where to feed his teammates for easy buckets.

Storming the court

We have watched ACC fans storm the court four times this season but here's something to think about. After State stormed the court after beating Duke, the Wolfpack lost to Maryland. The Terps stormed the court after beating State then lost to North Carolina. Wake Forest rushes the floor after beating NC State. They head to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Miami stormed the court after beating Duke. The Hurricanes host Florida State on Sunday trying to remain unbeaten in the ACC.

This all makes sense right?? It sure has the makings of an unpredictable ACC tournament and beyond.

    Proofreading the lost art.

Gravely, maybe you should write an article entitled "Trying to figure out ACC officials." One game it's a free for all, then the next game they call over 25 fouls in one half. Sure, it usually affects both teams equally, but has to be confusing to players in knowing how to play and adjust.

I think Duke will squeek out a win, but Maryland will give them all they can handle.

If you'd like to get a gander at the NCAA Tournament projects are from one person's view, go to matchups are still subject to change but you can keep up with what is on the horizon there...

First off, it was not me. Ryan Kelly, arguably Duke's all around best player, going down at the beginning of conference play changes this team drastically. No one could argue the fact that Duke had, although a difficult road, a realistic shot to go undefeated in ACC play before he went down. They undeniably had proved that they deserved that kind of respect. Obviously, with Kelly out, there will be more losses to come. K needs to work his magic fast. I think the fan that you are pointing a finger at gets a break on this one, because it was not a farfetched statement at the time.

Gravley makes some good points, but he really needs to proof read his article a little more closely. There are multiple typos that change the entire meaning of some of his sentences.

As some on here have noticed, the ACC seems pretty low on teams based on this article. C'mon WRAL, at least change the title to more appropriately read "Trying to figure out Raleigh-Durham to Chapel Hill basketball". As for Staurday, while I would have liked to have my guys play Duke on Wed as Miami did, I really don't know what to expect. I'm sure Duke will be pressing during their practices to avoid a letdown, but I hope that there is still some residual hangover from that big defeat.
    GO TERPS!!!

Well said. Couldn't agree more (this from a State fan). Just to explain to you the real purpose of this article...
BAIT. It's an attempt to get the three sets of fans in the area to have a go at each other. I've noticed way to much class and respect from the fans on the recent articles and it apparently is driving WRAL crazy.

This is typical ACC. For those of us old enough to remember when only the tournament champion went to the NCAA, remember that the regular season champ got a bye in the first round of the ACC. That did not always translate into who won the tournament.

The ACC has been, and hopefully for us fans, always will be, a bit unpredictable. That's why they play the games and that's why we watch them!

I remeber some guy on here saying that Duke wouldn't lose a confrence game this year. Who was that? Go ahead and own up to it!
