Turner's 2 HRs not enough in 7-5 loss to BC

Posted April 19

— Despite a pair of homers from Trea Turner, NC State baseball dropped a 7-5 decision to Boston College on Saturday night at Doak Field at Dail Park to even its series with the Eagles.

The Wolfpack (21-16, 7-13 ACC) struck first on Chance Shepard’s solo homer in the second, then rallied to take a 3-2 lead through three after Boston College (13-25, 4-16) scored a pair in the top third. The Eagles tied it 3-3 in the fourth and grabbed a 5-3 advantage in the fifth. State trimmed that margin to 5-4 on Turner’s first homer of the night. BC made it 7-4 in the ninth, before Turner’s second homer set the final margin at 7-5.

Turner finished 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs in his first multi-homer effort since March 5, 2013 at Elon. Andrew Knizner provided the Pack’s only other extra-base hit, an RBI double in the third. Shepard homered and drew a walk in a 1-for-3 start at designated hitter. Logan Ratledge drove in one in a 1-for-4 night. Jake Armstrong went 1-for-2 with a walk.

Patrick Peterson (1-1) took the loss on five earned over five innings. Eric Peterson relieved him and went the rest of the way, striking out five over four innings, holding BC to two earned on three hits and two walks.

Shepard’s solo shot to left made it 1-0 in the second. Trailing 2-1, the Pack rallied in the third after Turner reached with two away on a fielding error at short. Knizner followed with his double down the left field line. Ratledge singled to center to score Knizner from second and grant the Wolfpack a 3-2 advantage.

State fell behind 5-3 by the bottom fifth when Turner led off with a homer that hugged the right field foul pole. Facing a 7-4 deficit in the bottom ninth, Turner sent a towering fly over the left field fence for his second solo shot of the evening.

LOL.....I'm assuming Turner didn't get a hit judging from your comment. He did belt a couple of dingers, which is to say he did his part to help State win. Turner is not your problem.

From looking at State's lineup, Knizner is hitting .368 (133 ABs), Austin is batting .322 (143 ABs), Turner is hitting .303 & leading the 'Pack in runs scored, SBs, HRs, & walks. From there, your main players are hitting .254, .252, .227, .204, with a few others getting some ABs. Starters hitting in the .250s aren't gonna do much in the clutch. Judging from Rodon's numbers, he's not getting run support. And judging from some of those BAs, maybe Rodon should be hitting.

Totally agree with the comment below.

Bullpen pitchers may be experiencing 'tired arms' at this point having been used time and time again while others see NO mound action.

Also don't understand why Rodon is being used as a DH when another player that will be here in the future could benefit from the batting experience.

What did he do with runners on 1st and second and no outs in the 7th?? This team is very disappointing. Probably won't make the ACC tourney, but it's the same story for as last year. Can't hit descent pitching and mismanagement of the pitching staff Find some better clutch hitters!!! Some of these freshmen may turn out to be better than these so called All-Americans!!!
