JOE PA was used as a scapegoat and peeople like the guy who said this was a great column think that is fair. It is not. JOE PA was a great man, everyone knows it, and sometimes I wish people wouldn't listen to everything the media says.

Great column AG. These Joe Pa apologists make me sick.

  • jeffreysimons Jan 30, 2012

    Mr Gold,

Maybe Paterno was too brutal in running up the score on the Terrapins in years past and it has clouded your judgment. I have several issues with your column, but let me first start by saying that due process for Joe Paterno and sympathy and justice for the alleged victims of Jerry Sandusky are not mutually exclusive ideas. They are a moral disassociation created by the media. PERIOD. Penn Staters have done more to contribute to the welfare of children than you ever will. We raise millions each year for THON (which benefits children of cancer) and as an alumni organization we have donated over $500,000 to RAINN. Like the irresponsible media, you imply that if we are not prefacing every single comment we make by acknowledging the suffering of these alleged victims, we are somehow doing them an injustice. I'm sorry, but that is the weakest morality play in the books. We care, we just don't bring it up every time we need to hide behind the weak condemnation of a great man.

You write that Paterno "did only what he was legally obligated to do" . . . since when has this been anything BUT commendable? First of all, you do realize that statistically speaking, by reporting this allegation to his superiors, Paterno is in the 2-3% of people who actually do so? More to the point, doing what you are legally obligated to do is not the minimum, it is not the maximum, it is the LAW which is presumably based on social morals. Everyone who follows the law should be commended.

Furthermore, the condemnation of Paterno in the media (as you acknowledge) comes from a reading of a grand jury SUMMARY, which is not a recounting of testimony, it is not a statement of fact, and only includes the most pertinent and prejudicial information by the prosecution to justify indictments. PERIOD.

Your condemnation of Knight really proves his point . . . Paterno did not fail, the investigation failed. And the media failed. And thus YOU have failed.

No sir, YOU should be ashamed of yourself. Although you DO point out some of the valid points alumni have been sharing all along, you remain as uninformed as the rest of the media regarding Joe's actions and responsibility in this case. NO, Sandusky himself has said that to his knowledge, Joe was not aware of the allegations in 1998. Whether he was or not, there was no charges then, so to fire someone on heresay would have been inappropriate. In 2002 when the alleged incident occurred, Sandusky was no longer an employee of Joe Paterno's and therefore he had no authority other than to allow the trusted administration of the University address the situation as they saw fit. ALSO, Under PA law, they were the ones responsible to report. The FULL Grand Jury report has been said to include Joe's several attempts to follow up after noticing Sandusky was still on campus and he was told "it was being handled." When he reportedly asked for Sandusky to be banned, he was told he did not have that authority. So yes, those of us who knew him best DO believe he did all that he could have and should have done. WE ALSO believe the University failed those children, Joe Paterno, and us. Someone should be asking Governor Corbett why he kept quiet so long when the case came across HIS desk in 2002....He AND the University have known since then. So shame on YOU for allowing the media to encourage the University's scapegoating of Joe Paterno and THANK GOD for Phil Knight.
