you guys are pretty pathetic pointing out grammar mistakes in these comments.we're on an Internet forum, will using correct grammar or pointing out other people's mistakes actually mean the different between a unc education and a state education? Because I'm pretty sure that the ones who correctly used their education at either of the two schools are in medical school or something better than commenting on this article with correct grammar... Anyway. Concerning which school is harder to get into, it's definitely UNC. At my high school, we all use state as our "safe school" in case we don't get into unc, duke, harvard, etc. (yes, our school is a magnet school and we have quite a few go to Harvard and Yale. Majority go to UNC, unless they are interested in engineering and then they go to state. Honestly, at any school where football and basketball are very important, student athletes are going to get by on some things that normal students would not. It just depends on which schools get caught. And no, they're not going to be the brightest. Any student athlete applying to these schools who has a 3.0 GPA would be considered a genius. Meanwhile, non student athletes applying to UNC would need at least a 4.5 weighted to be considered getting into UNC(3.3 for nc state). So overall, student athletes aside, UNC is a better education overall.

Another top notch UNC education? What was State seeded last year? Why, I do not believe that they were a 16th seed. You know, common sense tells you that the play in games are the last teams in, followed by the 16 seeds, the 15 seeds, and so on. But hey, thats just common sense. No where does being the last team announced mean you are the last team in. They were in before all the seeds ranked above them, by hey, again, just common sense. Hum, what would make a team returning 4 starters from a sweet 16 team, returning a redshirt 7 footer, and gaining one of the best recruiting classes in the country, what in the world would make anybody think they might be good. Oh I know, common sense.

You really aren't doing much to help the hits UNC has taken lately on their academic reputation. It says "Two Tobacco Roads teams in the Associated Press preseason top 25, but, for a change, two are not wearing blue" Is this really the kind of education you are getting at UNC? If so, you might want to think about transfering to another school or paying attention in class one.

I don't think most highly touted teams brought their A Game last year when they was the Pack on their schedule. That won't be the case this year. It will be interesting to see how well State handles being looked at as a real threat. Someone pointed out that another poster's views concerning were based on emotion and hopes rather than logic. I'd guess that in most years, the winner of the Monday night game in April (and the only one that means anything as far as I am concerned) were not the pre-season favorite to win it all. When you have another team like Indiana the year they won all their games, that was logic. They had the best group of players, the best chemistry, the best coaching job (man I hate to throw that in there), and relatively good health, it was logically for them to win it all. Basically, each year, a handful of teams have a realistic chance to win the championship, but many things will have to fall into place for it to happen. Having said that, if Kentucky continues to dominate the recruiting aspect the way they have recently, they just might wind up with enough talent to overcome the lack of some of the other intangibles and string a number of championships together. I doubt it, but it could happen. Should be an interesting year.

  • mxteam44 Oct 26, 2012

I think all three teams are a little over-rated in this poll, expecially my boys in light blue. We have no proven point guard, and are relatively young. UNC will beat some teams they probably shouldn't, and will lose to some teams they should probably beat. Looking forward to it regardless.
    Go Heels!!

UNC was tied with 6 to go, had 4 players injured and started with a 3rd string PG. The Heels have some brutal OOC road games and will have an entirely different look this season.

  • Got Peart Oct 26, 2012

I thnk State is a bit too high. I would say probably 10-15, but I'll take it! As they said - polls now don't matter. It's what mattes in March.

I would love seeing UNCG as the Cinderella! As a UNCG alum, that would be awesome! Wasn't too excited that a former hole named as the coach, but he's done good job in a short time. Let's go Spartans!

"Played them tougher? Can't remember exactly but Heels were up or down one point at halftime. Kansas played their worst game of the tourney versus NCSU. Heels scored as many points in first half as NCSU did in entire game against Kansas. Doesn't really matter but playing them "tougher" is certainly debatable."

Maybe we were watching a different tournament. State lost by 3 to Kansas. UNC lost by 13. UNC scored 10 more points than NC State for the entire game. Wolfpack held Kansas to 60 points. Kansas put up 80 against UNC.

State lost to the same team that eliminated Carolina from the dance in the very next round. And State played them tougher than Carolina did. State returns almost EVERYBODY, and is bringing in one of the best recruiting classes in the nation to boot. Carolina also has some great recruits, but they LOST just about everybody from last season.

So your thoughts on State and Carolina seem to be based on emotion and hopes than on logic

i saw how you said playing creampuffs would make them better, in what world dose that make since?...that will hurt that team because when they have to play a real contender and they can't do to the contender what they did to the creampuff all of their false confindence will be lost thus opening the door for the downfall we see it every year with nc state

isnt duke always overrated at the beggining of the season? duke is not a top 10 team they might be top 15 or 20 but they are certainly not top 10 nc state on the other hand might be 10 i still think carolina is going to be better than duke this year and i think right now that nc state might be the best team in the acc my preseason rankings in the acc goes nc state, unc, then duke! get over it devil fans your no longer the top teir in the acc lolzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nc state barely made it into the tournament last year, remember they were the last team picked... they had an average season... and that was with these same players so explian to me what made them better beacuse they made a run in the ncaa tournament we've seen teams makes runs before that doesen't always carry over to the next year.

What do you mean by "very long" time? That's a pretty subjective window.

State has a fairly easy schedule, from what I understand. We have a chance to build some good momentum before we face a tough opponent.

    HEY WRAL...read the above quote.

It looks like a lot of folks have already written off the Tar Heels. I think number 11 is a little high for Carolina and I will be really surprised if State and Duke stay in the top ten very long.

  • heels21 Oct 26, 2012

I'm glad for the weak schedule. Not because we can be overranked for longer, but because it should give us time to gel and figure out our roles. I'd rather do that while beating creampuffs as opposed to losing to top teams. Hopefully, we'll have our act together by the time we face some tougher competition.

I think we have our first really tough opponent in the ACC-Big10 Challenge. So it won't be TOO long before we get to see what State is made of.

  • StunGunn Oct 26, 2012

It's good to see all the Triangle teams ranked so high. This should be an interesting and competitive year in basketball. Duke and Carolina have to make room at the "adult table" for State, especially since State is ranked higher than either shade of blue. I hope the only bird I have to eat this season is turkey (not Hokie, Hokie94:) - I don't want to be choking down any crow:)

  • Turheel Oct 26, 2012

On paper, State has the easiest non-conference schedule of the three, so I expect them to be ranked high for a long time this year. I believe they will prove worthy of the high ranking. I hope the Heels develop good chemistry as the season goes on and are a strong team come ACC time. Their non-conference games are really tough and they will take a few lumps early on.....like at #1 Indiana. GO HEELS!

  • wjuliang Oct 26, 2012

Too early to tell. State and UNC have so many youngsters that chemistry will be a big factor. Still exciting for all 3 to be expecting good years.

  • wake_up_jeff_0 Oct 26, 2012

  • anderson Oct 26, 2012

    As it should be

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Oct 26, 2012

And unlike our neighbors in blue, there is one big difference with State being ranked highly like this. Our ranking is FRAGILE. If we lose a game, we'll be lucky to remain in the top-15. Carolina and Duke could lose a game and drop maybe a couple of spots. I hope we don't have to learn this the hard way.

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Oct 26, 2012

I'm happy for all these high rankings and high expectations. It's nice to have that for a change.

Having said that, and I don't mean to be a negative nancy, but we are only top-10 or top-5 ON PAPER. We got it together last year, and finished relatively strong. But we really just had a short stretch of good games, ending at the Sweet 16.

I hope we don't fall on our faces. I don't think we will, but it remains to be seen. Our guys cannot let this go to their heads. They need to stay hungry. We haven't won a single game yet.

    GO PACK!!!

  • theechriswhite Oct 26, 2012

As a journalism/editing student, I found an error in the first sentence of this article. Anyone notice it says "Two Tobacco Road teams in the PRESEASON AP TOP 25, but don't wear blue." Actually, UNC is No. 11 according to the poll (which the article states later) so if they want this to be correct, it should say "AP PRESEASON TOP 10"

  • shakennotstirred Oct 26, 2012

Gonna be some nail-biting going on come basketball season. Should be a great year for triangle teams. GO PACK!!!

  • Voice of Reason 23 Oct 26, 2012

Duke is a little underrated in this poll, but all in all , it seems good. It's going to be fun to watch a Duke team full of big men this year. I love when K gets one of those teams. And, at least we won't have to listen to the nonsense from UNC fans about living and dying by the 3.

Well seeing how Duke is one of the winningnest programs in the last 30 years, I wouldnt say they are ever "overrated". As happy as I am for State, if anyone is overrated, its them, One sweet 16 appearance in 30 years doenst mean youve turned the corner and are ready to run with the big boys. In any case, I DO wish State luck and hope they are as good as advertised but in response to you comment, Duke is ALWAYS dangerous in Basketball and every bit deserving of a top 10 ranking year in and year out...

I am not a Duke hater and really don't have an allegiance to any of the triangle colleges but I often feel they are over-rated in these AP polls. Coach "K" alone gets the credit for the ranking that Duke usally gets. NC State will have a raised bar this year because of the sweet 16 run last year, and all the returning players.
