I think we all know the BCS bowls are the "high bowls", but I agree that getting to a bowl means a lot to the players. A lot of people complain that "bad" 6-6 teams go to "bad" bowls, but I think when they begin having playoffs some of these "lower tier" bowls may disappear. At any rate, no one forces us to watch the so-called "bad bowls", and they do provide extra practice for the players and revenue for the conferences.

Maybe TOB will flourish in the role of an Associate Head Coach; he won't have as many responsibilities. Good to see you back here, Conrad.

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Jan 4, 2013

Great news for TOB, State, and dare I say, Virginia.

  • takeabathgreg Jan 4, 2013

lmao I guess virginia did not pay attention to how bad a in game coach opie was...also why would he take this job and not the money from the wuffies??obviously the man is an nitwit!!!

  • I am not who you think I am Jan 4, 2013

Deacon, which of the 35 bowls is a "low level' bowl. Which bowls are high level? The BCS made for TV games the fake NC.. What is the purpose of a bowl game?.. recruiting, extra practice time, reward for a winning season, $$ earned for the conference and school Tell the players that went to a low level bowl after they went thru extra practice and gave up their holidays

These kids got to play in a bowl game an experience of a lifetime

  • I am not who you think I am Jan 4, 2013

6 yrs was not enough time to rebuild a program for you, and when was the last time did State or UNC even won their last ACC fball titles ? Why dont you try saying 1979 & 80, thats how long ? conrad

Since it has been 79' or 80' for either NCSU or UNC that would have more to say about the ability to keep top local talent coming into the schools than coaching. If it has been 30 years blaming O'Brien for the last 6 is ridiculous. He wasn't brought in to bring the program to the "next level" whatever that is. He arrived to clean up from the previous coach. Doren(sp) wont take NCSU to the "next level" either he will be gone before it happens look at his record

I agree. Going to low level bowls means nothing.

  • Raleigh Rocks 1 Jan 4, 2013

conrad, he said nothing about rebuilding, he said consistent winning seasons and bowl game every year.

    NC state had that.

I wish both of them the very best. They took The Pack as far as they could, but could never make it to that next level. They fielded teams that were inconsistent, poorly prepared, and under-motivated. I hope we all learned some things.

  • kornfan2448 Jan 4, 2013

Very surprising. No knock on the UVA football program, but with $1.2 million coming my way and the way coaching positions open up, I would have sat back, enjoyed some time off and waited for a more attractive opening. Hope the best for him though.

Im very sorry to bust your high morals, but these coaches are being paids millions to do nothing more than to win games. Its plain and simple as that.

And hes not a very good recruiter nor can he assemble a good coaching staff & not very good as a gametime manager nor halftime adjustments either. But i wish both coaches well.

Good hires for VA. Expect them to get much better quickly.

Yea, he's a legend in his own mind.

  • I am not who you think I am Jan 4, 2013

great hire for UVA. The expectations of the football program at UVA are different they want 8 win seasons and to go to a bowl game. London, O'Brein and Tenuta can help them achieve that. UVA doesn't have the fantasy goals of a NC. UVA doesn't get 5 star recruits or have top recruiting classes according to Mel Kiper. Their academic standards are to high and thety REQUIRE athletes to be students first.

I still don't understand the mentality of firing a coach that gives you consistent winning seasons and takes you to a bowl game every year. ADs that fire coaches between end of season and bowl games are classless .

  • 75Tarheel Jan 4, 2013

    Interesting.........but only mildly.

  • mm23 Jan 4, 2013

450K and a 150K signing bonus for an Associate Head Coach of Offense. Are you kidding me?! What does the professor who is teaching students who will someday perform surgery make? Sadly, I don't have a suggestion for a solution either, just an observation of misplaced priorities.

  • ptrrrk1 Jan 4, 2013

Say what you want... These two hires will help UVA immensely.

  • Tunaboy Jan 4, 2013

best of luck Tom. Certainly you will be appreciated for the coach and man you are in Charlottesville. The wuffies will be seeing what a mistake they made in the next couple of years and you can smile in reflection at the pack of fools.

Don't forget O'Cain is also a Clemson and East Carolina castoff.

  • Honesty first Jan 4, 2013

You are right in that Tenuta is the bigger news here. He is a cancer on any staff and is a very poor recruiter. He does not like recruiting at all. Look how many jobs he has had and how he jumps from school to school. UVA will be his 4th stop in the ACC alone.
Smart move by Yow. Saves money and doubtful UVA ever beats NCSU again with the staff they have.

I hope Beamer does dump the assistants who aren't getting the results VT deserves. I didn't espect TOB to retire, and getting fired may have given him even more motivation to continue coaching. The UVA/State game (if they play each other next year) will be very interesting.

    +1 Hokie.

Still, this move shocked me. Never saw it coming. Agree with others that Tenuta is the bigger story, IMHWPO

Wonder if they were a package deal?

  • VT1994Hokie Jan 3, 2013

I would surmise that only a FEW ever played this game; much less ever coached on this Sportsfan. Heh. Heh. Pretty funny when I read all of this bull sugar. I've been on here since 07. Not too many grads on hardly any posts.

  • cjw6105 Jan 3, 2013

Agreed. Tenuta is the bigger news here.

  • davidgnews Jan 3, 2013

Great for them, it's a win for everyone involved. Best of luck to TOB and Tenuta, they should do well there.

  • Deacons Jan 3, 2013

A good hire in getting Tenuta but UVA will regret hiring TOB.

  • chivegas Jan 3, 2013

Good deal for all involved. TOB would be a great assistant and State saves some jack. Interesting though that Tenuta gets paid more (yearly anyway).

I wish TOB the best. It's ironic that the UVa beatdown this year is likely what cost him his job at State... How the football turns...

  • ACCInsider Jan 3, 2013

Classy move by Yow to waive the non-compete clause and offer a lump sum that makes up the difference in pay. TOB stood to make $1.2mil from State. Now, a guaranteed $1.05mil from UVA and $200k from State allows him to coach again and come out with $50,000 more not including the potential $300k bonus.

It's a shame Cunningham wouldn't work a similar deal with Butch that would allow him to coach at FIU without loosing money. Refusing to offer a $270k lump sum vs having to pay $1.8mil doesn't make any sense. Thorp should be willing to save $1.5mil and work with Davis especially now that Martin's report basically said Thorp was wrong.

$450,000 to coach TEs? i'll take that gig. and what does an associate head coach do? say "yeah, what he said" every time london says something? lol

  • SportznutV2.0 Jan 3, 2013

    Step up for both

  • IBleedRedandWhite Jan 3, 2013

Sad to see Tenuta go, he will be a great asset to Virginia's defense. I wish the best to both Coast O'Brien and Tenuta but hope we kick their rear end's next season! GO PACK!

  • cole1949 Jan 3, 2013

So pitiful! Coaches and hires that do not realize it is over. The game has passed them by. Another example of acc ignorance. Mediocracy is a okay 6-6 is great.UNC is the future of acc football.

  • VT1994Hokie Jan 3, 2013

O'Cain applied for App. State job, and we know they were smarter than to hire his sorry self. He may retire. I'm a grad of ASU too. Steinspring has applied to Auburn. I hope he gets it, or any other job. Just leave. Curt Newsome is going back to James Madison. Good riddance.

Frank Beamer is trying to save his job. He doesn't have much intestional fortitude to have so many dismal coaches hanging on. Loyality? What is that?

  • gnboliver2 Jan 3, 2013

Well...TOB learned how to call coach London "Daddy" on November 3, so it will be an easy transition for him.

Maybe UVA can hire Mike O'Cain from VT and corner the market on NC State's cast-offs. Then we can pencil in a 6-6 season every year from UVA and an annual trip to exciting Charlotte, NC for a bowl.

How long will it take for someone advancing the conspircay theory that TOB threw the game to get a job offer?...oops...I guess I just did! :-)

No way he can recruit. He has strong ties in VA. He can still coach and do the job. Recruiting. Nah. He got this job because of political ties.

He gave up 1.2 million to coach again. He's a stubborn person no doubt. Maybe they gave him a bunch of money and he wants to rub it in Yow's face. Best guess. He's 65 now JGunn. Still pretty young. VT got rid of our receivers coach today. Still looking for Steinspring, O'Cain, and Newsome to hit the trail.

If we get Stanfords's OC we will be back much to the chagrin to some in the ACC. If Frank has the n-ts, he will save his job for a few more years, and complete this deal with a few firings.

  • PacknoPride Jan 3, 2013

  • DareToExcelWolfpack Jan 3, 2013

I wish him well. He didn't win enough games to satisfy us Wuff-loonies, but he is an honorable man and always did things the "right" way. Says a lot about him to pass up the money so that he could continue to work with young men.

  • grayboomerang Jan 3, 2013

Best of luck to TOB.....he did make improvements to the NC State team...but they were at a place where they were ready to go to the next level. I think Yowe did a fabulous job hiring Gottfried, so I trust her judgement here as well.
