Hopefully, they'll make it an annual event. Lots of football fans would welcome that series.

Things have certainly been average at UNC for a long time. But for the past 46 seasons, while Carolina has hovered a little north .500 in football, Duke has won only 33% of the time with ten different coaches (even including Spurrier's 20-13 record). Nobody who knows anything about college football would suggest that they "own" Carolina, or anybody else. Once players stopped playing both ways (on offense and defense) Duke's fate was sealed.

Pitiful Duke, the team with way more major bowl games and more ACC titles than the wannabe pro team unC.

We have sucked for 20+ years and still own the holes in titles. Things must be really pathetic or just average in Chaped Hole.

So do Georgia and Florida, but they find good reason to play every year in Jacksonville. Same with Texas and Oklahoma playing in Dallas. If those games weren't mutually beneficial to both sides they wouldn't happen. I still think the schedule would have to expand to 13 regular season games for this to be an annual event, but I believe strongly that will happen within the next few years.

What makes even less sense is how there's an article in the N&O talking about how Fedora is trying to get more fans at games in Kenan, but then they move games like this one to a neutral site. Makes no sense to me.

  • BattlingBishop 5 May 11, 2013

+1....thought the same thing. They both have 2 perfectly good stadiums to play in.

    The Gamecox?

  • kornfan2448 May 11, 2013

Interesting this is announced not long after approving almost $90 million dollars for stadium renovations that the taxpayers will have to flip the bill for. Now the fans of BOTH teams will have to travel if they want to see the game. Seems every year there are more and more opening games being played at neutral sites and treated like bowl games. They're just that, an opening game, and they're getting hyped up based on nothing but potential for the upcoming season.

  • cjw6105 May 10, 2013

I have tried to make 3 posts on this topic but the WRAL censors have blocked each one because I tried to use the official name of the South Carolina mascot, which starts with a G.

    Get a life, people.

  • cjw6105 May 10, 2013

May be a great game for the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, but I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of Tar Heel and Game fans (the Game is the official school mascot) would rather the game be played in Chapel Hill and Columbia, not in Charlotte.

I went to several of the State games that were played in Charlotte, 2 vs UNC and 2 vs ECU. The Thursday night game was a nightmare, as were the other 3 with the Charlotte traffic. The Thursday game (which will be repeated September 5) forced fans to take off work both Thursday and Friday, and either spend big bucks on a motel there or drive home in the middle of the night.

And if you think the average fan will get decent seats, that'll happen only after the corporates get their pick of the best seats first.

    Once again, big money rules.

  • Sound Tech May 10, 2013

Once again I see South Carolina is scheduling cupcakes for its non conference schedule.

If the martians land and want to join the ACC, you pull for them over Carolina. And no, you do not pull for the ACC, sometimes know as the John Swofford Conference. Hope that eases your worries some....

Fedora has 'em heading in the right direction.

  • BattlingBishop 5 May 10, 2013

As an avid football fan, glad to see it & hope they play every year. UNC, NCSU, & ECU need to be playing more games like this. Taking on the big boys will only make you better.

Hey, man, thanks! This will be a tough matchup, but I'm glad Fedora is willing to play these types of games. The fact that it's the "other" Carolina, only makes it that much more exciting.

  • packfan79 May 10, 2013

Go ahead and beat'em Heels, so when we resume our ownership of you, it will mean that much more!

  • InTheNo May 10, 2013

Well, I mean State who is what? 5-1 against Carolina, has opened up with SC recently. I mean, Hey Caulton/Ken/WRAL... don't make TOO big a deal out of this game, okay?

  • Knightwolf May 10, 2013

carolina vs carolina.....s vs holes.....what am I supposed to do?.....I'm an ABCer.....I'm so confused.....pull for the ACC?.....naaa.....is it basketball season yet?.....really, it should be a good time.

That's only when he coaches at pitiful dook. They need all the rare kodak moments they can get.

  • innocent bystander 3 May 10, 2013

I hope this does become an annual match-up, and although USC has a better team than UNC, they are going to be more focused on the following week's conference game against UGA. So if the Tarheels come to play it should be a good game.

  • VT1994Hokie May 10, 2013

It's a win-win situation for UNC. Loads of exposure and monies for the school. Recruits from all over will be watching this one. Great for the fans too.

  • lec02572 May 10, 2013

Doesn't UNC play USC in Columbia this year to start the season. If you ever want to start keeping North Carolina atheletes in state you have to beat USC every chance you get.

  • Ken D. May 10, 2013

If Carolina ever hopes to be relevant on the national stage, games like this are a must. I'm afraid, though, that as logical as this seems from a UNC point of view, South Carolina already has an annual rivalry game against Clemson. If the SEC goes to a nine game schedule, that only leaves one open slot for a tune-up game against a cupcake.

My take is that this sort of reality will eventually (read: soon) lead to an increase to 13 regular season games. ESPN must be fed.

  • JPack May 10, 2013

I may be wrong on this, but I view SC as a team that usually starts out hot o begin the season, whereas NC usually builds late season momentum. Based on that you would have to give the edge to SC. However, I do expect NC will be looking to put last season behind them as soon as possible, and a win over SC would be the perfect way to do it.
Count me as another State fan pulling for the Heels.

  • Leave it to Beaver Reruns May 10, 2013

Any chance that gives the ol ball coach an opportunity to get a scoreboard shot with his team against unC, works for me.

    GTHC, GTH.

  • 75Tarheel May 10, 2013

HEEL YEA!! This is double whammy for me. My Dad graduated from Clemson, S.C.'s most hated rival and I UNC. I hope this is an annual game.

    GO HEELS!!

This matchup has potential for a real rivalry. Even as a Pack fan, I will pull for UNC.
