The NCSU head coach was not arrested and did not have drugs on him. He did something wrong and was released. So using your same judgment, Williams should be let go as well. Another a good example, "In response to the allegations Duke University suspended the lacrosse team for two games on March 28, 2006. On April 5, 2006, Duke lacrosse coach Mike Pressler was forced to resign under threat by athletics director Joe Alleva and Duke President Richard Brodhead canceled the remainder of the 2006 season." The players were cleared, even I think given back their time for missing a year. Penn State is another example. Chris Webber and Michigan. Webber was indicted by a federal grand jury and stripped of his All-American honors by the NCAA as a result of his direct involvement in the Ed Martin scandal.

always grasping - you look kind of pathetic trying to find something on Duke or State, unc got caught doing multiple infractions with what went on in football and now basketball should be LOIC and to say it is not is turning a blind eye to the obvious.

  • genesmith2 Jul 25, 2013

I keep forgetting, WRAL is the organization run by Jesse Helms in the 60's, when his weekly rant was to close that cesspool over in Chapel Hill, because it dared to allow protests against the war in Vietnam, invited speakers from across the political spectrum from Lester Maddox (Helm favored) to Angela Davis (Helms went ballistic), and in general, just did not suit his ideas. The organization has not changed much in all these years.

I appreciate your post, OS, but I don't have your credentials when it comes to Carolina. I'm a huge fan, but I didn't attend UNC - my daughter did; her undergrad (Chemistry major) and grad school (Pharmacy). I'm proud of her accomplishments - she had to work very hard for them, as I'm sure you did for your three degrees. While I believe you don't have to attend the school to be a fan, someone like you who did, especially considering the time spent on campus, has a lot more skin in the game. We're both fans and want Carolina to do things the right way, and I appreciate and respect your posts.

JJ accepted improper benefits from a drug dealer named Fats?

Ask the UNC posters how they expect UNC to differentiate which players need babysitting vs which ones don't before they offer them athletic scholarships. That's not my argument...

Harrison Barnes is a friend on facebook and all of a sudden he's connected. I guess b/c I'm friends with Lebron, Carmelo and Cam Newton on FB that makes me connected? When it's all said and done Wral and The N&O (aka Packpride) will look foolish! Wait and see....;-)

Sorry but that he shouldn't have to babysit the players 24/7 excuse doesn't work anymore. Unc's already used that excuse once and promised they'd clean things up...the cleaning up hasn't happened and may never happen...

FYI, I wasn't saying the fans are using excuses. I was saying UNC blew it when they brought in a low-character guy like PJ in 2011, after all the cr*p had been widely known and had already done tons of damage to UNC's reputation...

Both jgunn and I are "Tar Heels" - through and through. That said - I know I have made NO EXCUSES for any of the C_AP that has gone on at UNC in the past several years or what is currently the topic of discussion... and if jgunn has made any excuses they have certainly slipped by me - I've seen no excuses coming from jgunn! To the contrary - both of us have been extremely critical of and have condemned what has happened/what is happening and expressed out desire for everything to be put on the table -get it all out - and CLEAN IT UP - no matter the consequences!!!

Regarding coaches "babysitting" their athletes 24/7: That -for all practical purpose - is not possible! The key is torecruit players with "characdterr" and enough academic "chops" that with motivation they can succeed. I know for a fact Universities that football and basketball players hire people to follow their athletes to class each day to make certain they actually attend class! Any athlete that requires babysitting of that sort... should never be offered a scholarship!!! Any athlete that would require "babysitting" to prevent the like of what happened with Hairston.... should NEVER be offered a scholarship!!! CHARACTER... CHARACTER... CHARACTER!!! MORE ATTENTION MUST BE GIVEN TO CHARACTER of the athletes!!!!

What year did PJ enroll at UNC? Was it before or after the known issues within UNC? Roy shouldn't have recruited players that need babysitting after UNC promised they'd clean things up, but that didn't stop him from bringing PJ in, a player that needs babysitting...

  • truthmatterstome2 Jul 24, 2013

Guilt by association. Why don't we talk about NCSU's head basketball coach and his personal conduct issues at Alabama. Did his behavior make a difference to State, when he was hired? Isn't State's administration guilty by association? Yes, and since they are, why doesn't WRAL publicize what the public, who is paying his salary, the reason for his dismissal from Alabama? Do you pick and choose your "news" based on your alliance with NCSU? No doubt about it.

  • grh90 Jul 24, 2013

Well it looks like WRAL has found something else to feed the state college football fans and the duke basketball fans (which are the same fans).

I take strong exception to your claim about UNC not caring enough to find solutions. Absolutely false!

I try not to blame those who are reporting facts and doing it responsibly; that includes some reporters at the N&O and a few reliable posters at Pack Pride.

Kane is a special case. While many of his articles are more or less ok, Kane has done numerous hit pieces that are the worst of yellow journalism. The latest one this week regarding is regarding Boxill; I have discussed it elsewhere.

translation: we cheat, our players hang with s, who cares as long as we hang banners legit or not!!

  • accfanatic01 Jul 24, 2013

Unfortunately Gunny, it seems the powers that be at UNC are not reacting to this the way many other universities have and do. I do not blame Roy either, but somewhere accountability has to become important, you are accountable for who you recruit, bottom line. I hate allo of this mess, puts a damper on what could have and may still be an excellent season in triangle basketball. I think everyone involved would be much happier if this would come to an end. It has become rather obvious to anyone with a critically thinking brain that there is ALOT more to the story with Fats and his connections to UNC then what we are seeing as of now. Probably going to get worse before it gets better.

  • StunGunn Jul 24, 2013

This is beyond "embarrassing". It's awful, and it has to stop. I don't put blame on Roy - he shouldn't have to babysit his players 24/7, but he does need to recruit more players like Marcus Paige and less players like PJ. It starts and ends with the type of players being recruited. Only so much can be explained away by "he's only 20" and "every school cheats".

This mess is pervasive, with too many "prongs". I don't care what the legal system excuses or dismisses; this behavior is not what a "student/athlete" should be displaying. I hope Carolina puts more "student" back in the "student/athlete" equation.

  • thebaldguy Jul 24, 2013

As a UNC graduate, I find it appalling what is going on there. I had heard rumors of such things when I was there (class of 94) but this is making my diploma stink. The goings-on at NC State in the 80s is what led to my decision not to attend there. They were punished for their wrongdoings and have made amends. As much as it will hurt UNC to be punished, if NC State can survive it, why can't UNC? And all of the people who refuse to correctly spell Duke, please grow up.

  • gkgreene Jul 24, 2013

Maybe WRAL will look at how UNC uses medical hardships to basically kick less talented players off the team to allow room for more talented players without hurting their APR.

  • accfanatic01 Jul 24, 2013

^They are looking, you can count on that. Any news media outlet is not going to give you everything they have in one story, they can make more money spreading it out and dropping mini "bombs" over an extended period of time. It is more relevant to talk about the UNC issues because of their recent issues with the exact same thing and the fact that the bread winner, the basketball team, is now involved.

  • rduguyhere Jul 24, 2013
