I have no doubt about the ACC competing with the SEC. All I see is that the SEC has the best recruits each year. Bama has guys on the 3rd and 4th stings that could be starters in the ACC in a few positions. VT's opening games vs the big guys hasn't been all that much. I do believe that teams learn from playig the tough teams early. I just hope that our new coaches can learn from this game, and teach them a bunch better than lately.

So true, Ken, and out of all the games, I think Clemson has the best chance to put a "W" in the column.

I agree, SC did appear to be faster. A lot of UNC plays drew gang tackles even when it initially looked open. But SC didn't look like a top 10 team to me last night. Their performance just wasn't crisp and they didn't look focused at times. Might just be first game jitters, but I don't think they will get far without improvement.

It doesnt matter how much of the face mask you grab. Clearly his head jerked but then the hand slipped off to make it look like it wasnt much. Penalties are a part of the game...

I agree. UNC did look like they were better conditioned.

To me it wasn't just the defense that looked slow. I thought USC was noticeably faster on both sides of the ball.

  • Honesty first Aug 30, 2013

Clowney was the difference in this game. No big trophy for the big boy. Ha ha

UN*C also scored on a drive where they converted had a 4th and 12 possession. For all intents and purposes, when you hold a team to 4th and 12, you got your stop. But they were on the verge of getting blown out so they had to go for it.

Point being, even one of their scoring drives was a drive that the defense had forced to punt. They just chose not to punt.

Some of the pregame predictions I saw actually had the score a bit closer--around 30-17--than the final score turned out. I got the feeling that USC's focus, especially the D, was more on next week's conference game against Georgia.

  • rduguyhere Aug 30, 2013

Lots of State fan comments here. Pretty typical. Then again, I remember the UNC fans "hosing" the State fans about their performance last year against Tenn.

That's cool. State was playing a mediocre Tenn team on a neutral field and looked awful last year.

I saw alot of positives in the loss to SCAR last night for UNC on the road in a hostile environment against the #6 team in the country. It won't be a long season. One word for the opposing ACC defenses vs UNC.... get in shape! LOL

  • Ken D. Aug 30, 2013

This game just demonstrated what I suspect most fans already knew coming in. UNC just isn't as good as USC this year. I think we'll learn the same thing about VT when they play Alabama.

The ACC plays 8 games this year against the SEC, and a clean sweep isn't out of the question. Only Clemson and FSU have a shot at winning one for the ACC.

  • jdupree Aug 30, 2013

Game was closer than most folks thought it would be. The officials made a terrible call on the face mask penalty that helped UNC avoid a punt and ultimately score. As for Clowney, he was impressive early in the game as he consistantly beat off double teams and came close even though most plays ran away from him. If he had a virus early last week and with 90+ game time temps, he did really well to play as much as he did. I was impressed with UNCs conditioning but thought their defense was small, slow and indecisive which means they will have to score a lot of points to win against good teams. I don't think they look as good as last year.

Wonder whose cars the USC players drive around in and what kind of classes the athletes take? Bet the farm there's plenty going on there and at every other big time Div 1 football school. Today you either cheat and be successful, or don't cheat and be mediocre. That's the game coaches, players, and chancellors play with the NCAA.

  • nralgreen Aug 30, 2013

Wow. Joe was obviously watching a different game than me. UNC-Ch never threatened USCe's lead. Big plays make the difference in just about EVERY game. USCe was obviously the better team last night. Which "unit" do you think UNC-Ch was better? OLine, no. DLine, no. QB, no. RB, no. WRs, no. DBs, no. LBs, no. Special teams, no. Hmmm. But UNC-Ch isn't far from being just as good. Hilarious.

  • anti-Hans Aug 30, 2013

Irony alert - I missed the beginning of the game but was listening in the car. After the long pass early, the UNC radio guy was talking about the "meeting" on the sidelines being led by Boston, and basically berating the defense for the failure on that play. The way it was described was Boston was doing his job but others let him down. Just kind of funny since he was one the major burnees on that play (actually both of the big plays).

  • JACKSONSAWYER IS SUPREME Aug 30, 2013

  • Alex25 Aug 30, 2013

When UNC can't cheat, they win less. Simple stuff really.

Cheat to compete is no way to live ...

  • jmcdow2792 Aug 30, 2013

I think this assessment is spot on. UNC may have the bigger upside with the ability to learn from this game.

  • 78FJ40 Aug 30, 2013

    5. The timeout war between Steve Spurrier and Larry Fedora, following an extended lightening delay, was rather precious.

It's "lightning", not "lightening" Joe. SMH

  • dmccall Aug 30, 2013

Common factor in #1 and #2: Tre Boston. Watch the tape.

Take away those two plays and the fumble punt return and you have S. Carolina struggling to pull away from this UNC team that has a long way to go. Teams never look that good in August, but I'm not sold on South Carolina as a true SEC contender.
