The penalties called on Carolina were deserved - they did commit a lot of boneheaded penalties, and there's no excuse for that. Fedora needs to put an end to the penalties and demand discipline from his team.

  • StunGunn Sep 30, 2013

Right now, I'd have to agree that UNC and ECU are headed in opposite directions. Coach Ruff has done an excellent job in Greenville. Fedora needs time to build a team with his recruits, but the fact is that ECU was the better team by far last Saturday and deserved to win the game in a romp - tip of my hat to Coach Ruff and his team. Back to the drawing board for the Heels.

I did not know that the guy who "beat out" Marvin Austin on the Giants was a former ECU player! Regardless of the fact that I am a Tar Heel - through and through - and in spite of the game last Saturday - my comment about Austin being beat out by an ECU guy is "It could not have happened to "better" and more deserving guy (Austin)! I don't want to ever again see the likes of Austin and/or Greg Little in the Carolina uniform for ANY team... even if that would mean we never win again. Those two are the best examples of "class-LESS" and "unsportsmanlike" I've seen!

I very much agree no matter the team.

Will never forget the post-ECU press conference with Marvin and Butch. Marvin went on and on about E-C-Who and then raised his jersey and said Butch didn't recruit our players but they weren't good enough to wear the jersey. Butch just sat there and smiled and let him go on and on.

And where is Marvin now? Giants cut him - because the starter in front of him was Linval Joseph, ECU graduate. What goes around, comes around.

Amen! AMEN to the "lack of class in the Butchie era"!!! Marvin Austin and Greg Little are likely the most "class-LESS" players I have ever seen on a football field/team. I've seen nothing as bad as Austin or Little on this team, but I still have observed a few players on the team this year who sometimes seem more interested in the proverbial "trash-talking" and whatever to draw attention to themselves. Right in line with that... the number of personal fouls on Carolina players last Saturday was RIDICULOUS! And I'm NOT complaining about the officials. A personal foul is NEVER justifiable and is a self-serving, narcissistic act not consistent with being a member of a team!

The "QB" question... I often find it interesting when prognosticators in a forum such as this and/or at the "local watering hole" emphatically state that "The best QB is not playing", obviously indicated that they believe someone "on the sidelines" is better and should be in the QB position "on the field". Do you know - have any idea - of how much study and planning goes into determining which players should be on the field? How much study of video is done from both practices and games? How much study and planning goes into planning for specific opponents each week? Football coaches, the head coach and all associate/assistant coaches - and there are a LOT of them, literally live with those players. They are with them during hours of practice each day on the field, they are inside in meetings with them and studying video with them, they are on buses and planes with them, in hotels, etc., etc. I sometimes wonder if the planning/preparation, etc. for a football game is close to the amount that went into D-Day in WWII !!! It is truly UNBELIEVABLE!!! That said... I believe that the coaches have the clear, best perspective on who is the best at QB or any position... NOT "fans" who only see the game on Saturday. Bryn Renner... not only has "very good numbers" - he is a "5th year" senior. You may have a freshman QB on the bench who can run faster, has much more agility/scrambling ability, can throw farther and "harder", etc., etc. - but does not have the maturity and decision-making ability that a 5th year senior with Renner's playing time has. It is "fun" to debate/discuss/argue about such things, but I will put my money on who the coach's believe is the best QB or player in any position!!! They have seen that player far - FAR - more than any of have... and it seems that "statistics" are kept on EVERYTHING... many of which we are not "privy to".

Sorry, I should have been clearer, I meant you knew what it was like to be on the end of the UNC personal fouls. Saw much of the lack of class in the Butchie era.

Yeah, it wasn't a JUST case of a QB picking apart the defense. ECU had a ton of rushing yardage, too. That shows they won the line of scrimmage. You're right about that, Kev.

Carolina's got some big problems. They're capable of some big plays on offense sometimes, but they can't seem to put it together for a whole game.

  • FE_ORA Sep 30, 2013

Renner's numbers are actually pretty good. The problem wasn't Renner. He led y'all to 31 points despite the opponent owning time of possession to the tune of 101 total plays (most EVER for an opposing team in Kenan).

The defense is the problem. Not Renner. If you're going to complain, at least complain about the PROBLEM, itself. Carolina has had a lousy defense for two years now.

I don't know. One or two games may not MAKE a season. But three losses in four games is getting pretty close to BREAKING their season.

  • KevInApex Sep 30, 2013

According to Steve Logan, a 4-2-5 is just a 4-3 where one of the 3 is a defensive back. I think the defensive scheme made little difference. The Tarheels were blown off the line and even when in position to make plays did not due to poor tackling. The pass rush did not exist. This seems to be a talent issue more than anything else.

Teams in this kind of condition have been known to turn things around but after Saturday that is hard to imagine. One can only hope...

ECU is good. But they ain't great. Carolina made them LOOK like Alabama.

Steve Logan called it perfectly before the game on WRAL's coach's corner segment. He said this ECU offense was "tailor-made" for success against the defense scheme that Carolina runs (the 4-2-5). It played out exactly as expected. But ECU is not sop great against better defenses (VT says hello).

Carolina fans are funny. Before the game, ECU was going to be crushed. Now that they stomped this BAD Carolina team, the Holes are saying they're the best team in the state. It's pretty comical, but we State fans are loving it!

  • tombland Sep 30, 2013

Fedora showed he is a great recruiter and coach as Southern Miss. They played an aggressive national schedule and dominated Conf USA for years. Say what you want about CUSA but the top half of CUSA would play competitively with most of the teams in the ACC, with athletic budgets that are way less.
Maybe it was his job to have them pumped up for the Pirates, but it looked to me that the players on UNC just didn't care. When the Triangle media and most of the fan base live in a dream world, that mentality trickles down to the players at some point. I think that's what happened on Saturday.
I sat in Kenan for years and watched the Tarheels slip by ECU many times. One of those years was an ECU win, one was a tie, and two were decided by a late field goal. So yes, UNC has had a better ball team for many of those years, but despite the money flowing into Chapel Hill, they just haven't been that much better than ECU year in and year out.

You started out sounding intelligent and then you ended up sounding bitter and sad. Thanks for the first few sentences.

  • ACC Nation Sep 30, 2013

Someone needs to school Mo from Coats on what wins football games. ECU dominated both lines and that is what won the game. While the quarterback, running back, and receivers are most noticeable coaches and knowledgeable fans know the big uglies up front are actually the difference most of the time. It would not have made any difference who the quarterback was Saturday ECU would have won the game regardless because they dominated the offense and defensive lines.

  • KevInApex Sep 30, 2013

I think the answer to the problem in Chapel Hill is fairly simple. The loss of Geo Bernard, at least one NFL caliber offensive lineman plus the two best players on a bad defense have left the Heels with talent gaps in critical places.

There is always this assumption that with new seasons players will improve and step up to fill the losses but that has not happened in 2013 so far especially on defense. If even a good a CUSA team dominates you that badly at home the talent pool is running dry.

  • johnnyaudit Sep 30, 2013

Their fans whined about the officiating but 60 of their 95 yards of penalties were personal fouls. Hitting the QB late and kicking an ECU player on the ground will get you the flag every time.

But having watched some NCSU/UNC games, you State fans know all about that kind of play..........

  • Whocareswhatyouthink Sep 30, 2013

How many Personal Fouls were called against UNC Saturday? I counted 4.

  • mohowerton Sep 30, 2013

There is no reason for Fedora doesn't change QB's. He may have the stats. but is a loser. M. Williams deserves a chance, he was recruited by Fedora. As for stats. wins and losses mean more than his Stats. Someone needs to tell Jones Angel to quit praising Bren's Stats. and talk about the Wins and Losses. The next step for UNC is to fire Fedora. He has no Idea how to coach. Maybe if he slow the pace of his stupid super recruits would learn to play by the Rules.

Hard to have a good defense when your DC only gets 9 players on the field on some plays. Guess some of the players should have spent time in an entry level math class instead of all those AFAM farces.

  • dmccall Sep 30, 2013

UNC's 2-deep on defense has six SuperPrep All-Americans. Much of the rest are players that were ranked in the teens, not stellar, not bad. There are a few untalented players, but if you compare the level of these prospects to that of VTs, you'll see that there is more raw talent on UNC's roster. VT looks like a Bunting era roster, with only 4 studs and a bunch of VA players ranked from #15 to #30.

UNC's defense isn't awful because of talent. It is because of coaching. The penalties alone are enough to tell you that.

Guess that cupcake schedule UNC-CH played last year (Best team played was 8 win ECU; best ACC team played was 7 win Miami) gave a lot of UNC-CH fans a false sense of accomplishment for the new coach. Perhaps starting off with Liberty and SD State next year will make the UNC-CH fans feel a little better.

One or two games does not a season make. Expecting the wins rom past years to predict future wins is not very intelligent. Learn from the mistakes and move on. • pinehorse Sep 30, 2013

I was actually at the game last weekend on the ECU sidelines. During a couple of plays I did overhear the UNC defenders talking about the scholarship sanctions while the game was in progress. Evidently, discussing scholarship sanctions while trying to defend against pass plays and quarterback options can lead to missed tackles.

  • zonk Sep 30, 2013

Really? Scholarship reductions have ZERO/NADA/ZIPPO to do with the best 82 players on any team. Please quit trying to tell us that 3 waterboys a year affects UNC's performance. The top 3 depth-chart players for EVERY position on a football team adds up to 66 players. The other 59 players are a mix of walk-ons and GPA boosters with an occasional sleeper every decade. Spin, baby spin. These sorry games are strictly on the coaching staff...

  • anti-Hans Sep 30, 2013

I cant help but wonder if last year's fraudulent claims of division champs and ordering rings is now being paid back. He who exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted. UNX went so far out of their way to make rings and tshirts to claim the title that now they are reaping the rewards.

Or were the rings just another way to slip the players some extra cash. They get rings and then sell them?
