Does he get paid to write this stuff

  • Rip Rock Oct 2, 2013

Oh my god, this has to be the dumbest article ever written. The only tone he set was don't try an onside kick against your arch rival to start the second half of a game when you have the lead. He was all fluff and no stuff.

  • F0reAutumn Oct 2, 2013

LOL...so, in other words, he was fired.

    As was Tom Reed.

  • THeelBrn Oct 2, 2013

Huh? He must mean set the tone for mediocrity.

  • olivechapel1000 Oct 2, 2013

Perhaps why Carroll took Wilson in the Draft?

Also, I wonder what Kiffin was thinking when Rivers was eating him up last Sunday.

At least NC State has some good memories of football at times.

Me too. I just remember that we did not win as many games as we should have and that no one seemed to be sad when Monte left.

  • buster102007 Oct 1, 2013

What a well written article. That donkeyass carlton cooter needs to take lessons from this guy.

I wasn't even trying to be sarcastic. Maybe he set the tone for Chuck Amato.

exactly...what tone? what the fff is he talking about? this article makes no sense

  • charlesboyer Oct 1, 2013

My biggest memory of Coach Kiffen's time in Raleigh was when he rode up to a pep rally on a white stallion. While he struggled as a coach here, he was a good guy who really knew how to light up a crowd.

  • Hammerhead Oct 1, 2013

Helped set the tone for what?

  • gsms69 Oct 1, 2013

This is about as stupid article as I have ever read. But then its written by Bob Holliday.

  • Jim Pomeranz Oct 1, 2013

Bob, the Monte Kiffin hire came when Willis Casey was sick and could not participate in the search. (Remember, Willis was the person who found and hired Lou Holtz, hired Bo Rein to replace Holtz, and then hired Jim Valvano, among other successful head coaches such as Kay Yow.) The "firing" of Kiffin was no more than a non-renewal of his three-year contract. Willis may have informed him of that, or, simply put, "Your contract is up and it's not being renewed." Monte was fun to work with but he was simply not head coach material. By the way, the contract non-renewal was repeated three years later with Tom Reed.

  • GC Oct 1, 2013

The most memorable Kiffin exercise was the one that really got him fired while
State had a halftime lead against UNC IN Raleigh.

UNC gets the ball first in the 2nd half so Kiffin, brilliantly, decides to kick an onside kick with the lead on his home field. Yes young ones,,,Kiffin kicked an onside kick to start the second half off WITH THE LEAD!?!

And yes UNC recovered the onside kick,,,which led to a touchdown on that possesion. UNC proceeded to take a 2nd half lead to win the game. Hardly the stuff of supreme coaching decisions.

re: "He often talked about jumping out of an airplane, though I can’t confirm that he actually ever did this"....at a pep rally, he jumped out of a helicopter- when it was about 2 feet off the ground. I would have much preferred more W's!

  • NorthRalPack Oct 1, 2013

Kiffin did not jump out of a plane, but he did leap out of a helicopter.

It was during a pep ralley at Doak Baseball field in either 1981 or 1982. The helicopter roared toward the pitching mound and hovered about 5 feet off of the ground. Monte lept from the side of the chopper with a parachute strapped to his back. He landed standing up and then fell to his knees, the chute still safely packed on his back!

He was great showman (he also went a round with Joe Frazier in the ring in Reynolds Coliseum), but not a very good head coach. He found his calling as a D- Coordinator and does not have to put up with all of the trouble that comes with being the head guy. May we all be so lucky as to find our true calling sometime in our life!
