    You are exactly right!

Folks, there were a lot of those Duke teams from the 30's, 40's, 50's, and early 60's that would have surely gone to multiple bowls in a row if there had been the obscene number of bowl games that we have today. Look it up; there were a lot of top 20 finishes for them back in those days.

  • dave437 Oct 28, 2013

ah, the annual UNC-NC State pillow fight. how cute.

  • innocent bystander 3 Oct 28, 2013

Good job, Duke! Keep this up--especially a win over Miami--and you'll finish the season as a top 25 team.

  • lec02572 Oct 28, 2013

Well there is only one team in the triangle that is bowl eligible and its not UNC or NCSU. Congratulations to Coach Cut and Duke. They have worked hard for what they have achieved. Its not always how you win its just that you win.

Military Bowl: Duke vs. East Carolina.

  • abcershateme Oct 28, 2013

i haven't seen so many feel good stories since the fat kid scored a td.

  • DEVILS1 Oct 27, 2013

DUKE had four INT's in this game as well and Crowder had gotten behind the VT defense twice in the first half and was overthrown, he would have been off to the races. DUKE was in field goal range again at the end, but Cutcliffe and Roper decided to line up in victory formation. DUKE's defense showed up as well as VT's did in my opinion, Helton and Brown combined for 33 tackles between the two of them, Edwards had 12 alone. Boone looked as if he settled in and made some key plays and seeing Martin hit from 51 and 53 was awesome. DUKE had four freshman playing in the secondary, nice talent back there. What a win by DUKE!

    GO DEVILS

  • Tar Heels Blue Oct 27, 2013

Congratulations to Duke. Is their victory really unexpected? Va Tech has struggled through several games including ECU and UNC. Duke played a good game and Va Tech had flaws in theirs, but the bottom line is that Duke won...that's all that matters. Duke has by far the best record of the Triangle teams which bespeaks of excellent coaching and team work. This weekend State stepped into a buzz saw by the likes of FSU who clobbered Clemson. UNC finally played an almost complete game and beat a struggling Boston College team that had the reputation of a good running game. There are still around 5 games left in the season and State needs 3 more wins while Carolina needs four. Should Duke falter from this point forward, they will not be remembered for beating Va Tech but for the record they have for the remainder of the season. Again, good game Duke and congratulations. Go Heels!

  • mac240 Oct 27, 2013

    Duke all the way!

  • DEVILS1 Oct 27, 2013

The DUKE/NC State game should be a good one in Durham.

    GO DEVILS!

No they earned it. No cheating, no imaginary classes with freebee grades.

I agree about both teams heading in the right direction, and we fans have to be patient to see our teams get there. I'm not ashamed to admit that the Duke and State games are my Super Bowl, and winning those games means more to me than seeing the Heels win other game, no matter whether the teams are ranked or not.

Very true, MO. Sometimes, nice guys do finish first, and Duke is in first place in the Triangle, as well as the state of North Carolina.

Gotta admit the pic of Coach Cut on the front page of the N&O sports section IS worth a thousand words. I can't help but be happy for a good coach and an even better man.

I agree, the NandO gave UNC's victory yesterday top billing. Duke's win is a far bigger story.

  • MoDukev3 Oct 27, 2013

It's nice to see the "good guy image" in the headlines instead of more sports gossip and negativity.

    Go Duke!!!!!!!!!!

  • iron fist Oct 27, 2013

Not a Duke fan but I think the headline is wrong they didn't steal the spotlight they have worked hard to get there and deserve the spotlight. Congrats Duke. GO Heels!!!!!

  • DEVILS1 Oct 27, 2013

Victory Bell is already in Durham...VERY GOOD possibility it'll be there for another season, I sure hope so. All attention in on NC Sate now.

    GO DUKE

  • JACKSON THIS IS OUR STATE SAWYER Oct 27, 2013

UNC fans posting like crazy about State/FSU- better keeping an eye on Duke. Duke has quietly built an impressive resume this season- if it comes down going to a bowl on that last game for UNC I wouldn't count on it.
UNC says the victory bell belongs at UNC but after this year it may have a new home for a while. CONGRATS TO DUKE!!

  • DEVILS1 Oct 27, 2013

DUKE kept VT between the 20's, that's where VT gained their yards and draining the clock with Thomas getting 4th 1's extending drives. DUKE's defense (pass coverage especially)and special teams played great, pinning VT deep on punts and hitting from 51 and 53 yards.

  • sawdust65 Oct 27, 2013

"The State/UNC game is still a big deal to fans, even if the win doesn't earn a bowl bid for either team, and no one outside the Triangle gives a flip. I hope Ebron isn't writing checks his team can't cash. Yeah - the trash talk should be good this week, even though neither team has much room to dump on the other."

Spot on. I personally think that both programs may be headed in the right direction in the long run, and maybe this will become a relevant rivalry soon.

  • StunGunn Oct 27, 2013

While all three Triangle teams could create buzz with their respective games yesterday, I have to agree that Duke did steal the spotlight. That was a huge win for Duke's program. Number never lie, but Duke won the number that matters most: the scoreboard.

Carolina's win was huge. They pulled themselves together after that heartbreaking loss to Miami and played well on both sides of the ball. Gotta give credit to Fedora and the players.

The State/UNC game is still a big deal to fans, even if the win doesn't earn a bowl bid for either team, and no one outside the Triangle gives a flip. I hope Ebron isn't writing checks his team can't cash. Yeah - the trash talk should be good this week, even though neither team has much room to dump on the other.
