Props to Coach Cut. The National Coach of the Year honors should be a mere formality. I mean, he did lead Duke to 10 wins...

Nope. Race isn't part of the equation; I'm talking about the entire football team in general.

  • jmcdow2792 Dec 4, 2013

He not only deserves coach of the year for his performance, he also deserves it for his high character. I don't have as much information about the other two as I have about Cut. But I doubt either has a higher degree of character. Given where they are coaching, I would guess that high character is not at the top of the list of job requirements. I would vote for him soley on that.

  • uscnnc Dec 4, 2013

Despite what the Gus Bus has done at Auburn and the ACC being a weak conference, if Cutcliffe doesn't win National Coach of the Year, the voters should be banned from voting......forever. If you lead DUKE to 10 wins in a season, it should be yours....hands down, no questions asked. Maybe the voters will do the right thing.

Earlier this football season I noticed that the Harvard-Brown football game was being televised and decided to watch some of it to see what current Ivy League football "looked like". It was played in Harvard Stadium... the first such stadium built in America, parts of which resemble a Roman coliseum. I've been in it several times... football history fans should visit it if possible. Nevertheless, what did I see in that game? I did not see the same "size" - overall - that we see when we watch the NCAA D-1 teams of today, but... there was certainly ample speed, quickness, SKILL, and competitiveness - it was a GOOD game to watch! Post-game interviews with players... I heard not one "ya know". Those were articulate young men who could clearly handle themselves well in a class room as well as on an athletic field or court. In our "neck of the woods"... there are some articulate young men on almost all of our football and basketball teams, but simple casual observation will likely indicate that Duke has more of those players than other schools in the ACC.

Duke won six games last year to become bowl eligible, then proceeded to lose every game after, including their bowl game, ending their year 6-7, a losing year. This year they've won 10. I'd say being 10-2 is a large improvement over last year, and they haven't even played their bowl game yet.

  • pappybigtuna1 Dec 3, 2013

He did a great job, but... he would not have been my choice in the ACC.

This should be awarded to the coach that made the largest change in his ball club - where they ended up last year measured to where they are today

sat is going to be a huge embarrassment for the acc. if fsu beats dook by 50 plus we're the laughing stock because dook is our 2 best team. if fsu doesn't beat dook by 50,it an embarrassment because they couldn't beat dook by 50. no win for the acc sat.

nationally, Gus Malzahn, Art Briles and Gary Pinkel deserve more consideration for COY, but at least Cut will get some votes.

I know some people who have worked at several universities handling this sort of stuff. It's not the same, each school is allowed a couple of ~~~~~players, but they are under the microscope supposedly. Playing at Army, Navy, Air Force where you have to be appointed by a congressman; or playing at DUKE, Wake Forest, Tulane, Northwestern, Stanford, Vanderbilt and IVY League schools DO NOT have the same requirements. There are guys throughout the country that can't build the rocket, can't fly it and probably not put gas in it, but when you bench 225 lbs 20 times, run a 4.4 forty you get to go to college, just none of the one's I mentioned. Hell, look at Forest Gump. Seriously, they can have a couple border line guys, but they can't field an entire team. If they could, they would all be a lot better year in and year out. There are some schools in this State that you can get into with a "C" average out of High School, send that transcript to one of the schools I mentioned and see if you receive a letter of acceptance.

  • GETOUT Dec 3, 2013

Sorry guys but across the board all entrance requirements are the same for Division I athletes. There is no difference. You think Duke recruited Hood and Parker because of their educational acheivements in the classroom??? You think Will Avery and Corey Maggette where scholars??? No!!! For a division 1 athlete the standards are the same whether its Duke or North Carolina Central. The standards change with divisions (example d-1 standards are different from 2, 3, 4 etc). Students athletes choose the schools the want to go to based on where they can benefit athletically the most. Google search NCAA athlete entrance requirements if u dont believe me. The standards across the board will become stricter in 2016.

When other people are comparing it, so will I. You can not sit there and tell any of us that it is the same talent level and facilities between the two teams. Auburn did have two lucky wins this year, you can not deny that. VT and Miami were in the top 25 when DUKE beat them; c'mon man, what are talking about? They play in a BCS conference just like the others and go through their schedule j-u-s-t l-i-k-e everybody else. FSU is a great team but they played ****ing Bethune Cookman, (NC Central beat them), FSU played Idaho....really, you're kidding right. You state that DUKE is not playing anybody; same division as UNC, Miami and VT right? FSU played NC State and Wake just like DUKE did, Syracuse and Maryland are both 6-6, Florida sucks this year too. FSU has two impressive wins this year; Clemson and Miami. Yes, FSU and Auburn are good, but they both have played similar schedules. The SEC has two winless teams, they have multiple 5-7 and 6-6 teams in both divisions, as a conference they have won 4-5 more games than the ACC; big ******g deal. Auburn played Western Carolina, Arkansas St., Florida Atlantic, and in the league they played Miss St, Tenn and Arkansas which are all mediocre to bad teams; plus, they beat a bad Washington State team by one score, WOW, let's pop the cork. So, do not pretend that they played Alabama every week. All this BS about the sec is hard week in and week...no it's not. You sound like a broken record and you are just a hater, period. So, whatever dude......

Missouri is new to the SEC, but they aren't yet getting the top players. Malzahn inherited four consecutive outstanding recruiting classes. Pinkel, like Cut, has not had a single class ranked in the top 25 during that time. Pinkel, like Malzahn, is 11-1 this year, and playing in the SEC championship game, after missing a bowl entirely last year. Why isn't Pinkel the SEC coach being talked about instead of Malzahn?

  • lec02572 Dec 3, 2013

Without a doubt. He deserves it hands down. Yea, FSU is undefeated, but to win 10 games at Duke for the first time in the programs history. Congratulations! National Couch of the Year should happen also, in my opinion. Look at where the other coaches are coaching. Do they have the academic requirements of Duke? Have their programs had a history of wins in football? Of course they have. What Coach Cut has done at Duke is awesome.
