The simple truth is the Canes are too inconsistent. They surrender the blue line on defense, and at times seem lost in their defensive zone, often leading to cheap goals. They need better play out of the 3rd and 4th lines. Tlusty (IR), Jordan, and Semin have to step up their games in the second half. I like the move to bring up Anton Khudobin, though I suspect Cam's role is about to become diminished unless we can get something good for Peters. Jeff Skinner is becoming a star, which highlights the need to keep an enforcer to protect him (hopefully Harrsion can carry this load when he gets back). GO CANES!

    I agree with you!

And look who won the game.

  • jscott13 Jan 2, 2014

I posted the other day that Skinner should have a letter on his sweater and people disagreed, but look who has just started the ball rolling again.

Wow! Just when I thought that we had seen the pinnacle of stupidity, along comes this guy. What sucks is that he's proudly sporting the NC State logo. What a disgrace to the wolfpack and of course an insult to any hockey fan's IQ.

  • DJ of Clayton Jan 2, 2014

I can sort of see the logic behind this and it is keeping in line with several other moves. We have had three so-called "enforcer types" over the past 2-3 seasons- Bryan Allen, Tim Gleason, and Kevin Westgarth. However, it seems that the Hurricanes are trying to get away from that mindset, and maybe that is OK. I think they do need to make some more changes, though. Unfortunately, I don't know how far they are willing to go. I would like them to see what they can do with Cam Ward. Although I think he is still a good goal tender, maybe a change of scenery, as they say, would be good for him, as well.

"I'm sorry. I forgot about the half dozen or so "caniacs". Can't forget about them."

Canes sell more tickets than Wolfpack basketball with less seats.

"The real problem lies with Rutherford. He seems to be one step behind the other GMs in the league. Since winning the cup, he hasn't done one thing right with putting together a competitive team. We are a 500 club and will always be a 500 club with Rutherford making the deals. IMO if the Canes dumped Rutherford they'd have a better chance at making the playoffs and possibly winning a second cup."

He did put together the first cup team, you know this right? This post implies he took over after winning the cup.

  • pbourey Jan 2, 2014

I have been saying this all season long. Kirk Muller came on board with the mantra of making players accountable. I've not seen this. The same players having the same mediocre performances and yet I don't see their ice time suffer in the least. Why not send messages like that to try to wake up these high salaried players? Why not make them healthy scratches or bench them a period now and then? Then perhaps these wholesale trades might not be needed.

  • jscott13 Jan 2, 2014

Good article, Mike. On the goaltending situation...they do need to trade the biggest name. It's time. Since they got rid of one player with a letter on his sweater, let's go ahead and trade the one that wears the "C".

3 front-page stories on wral about the canes...that's a first. As other teams get bigger, stronger, and more skilled, the Canes just seem to shuffle around some average players. They better figure out how to put together a playoff team soon, or risk the team moving.

what would you like to see done?

  • Luv2Camp Jan 2, 2014

I would like to see an even larger move. There is NO leadership on this team at all. NONE. Time to find someone that will make the clubhouse loose and challenge his fellow players.

  • bluedvlrob Jan 2, 2014

I just don't understand their moves sometimes. One year the philosophy is "we need to get bigger and tougher so we don't get pushed around". Next year or so is "we need more speed and more of a puck moving defenseman", but isn't that what everyone's looking for? So please tell me in what direction is this team going now? I hate to say it but, maybe it's time to move Ward while you can still get a high end player for him. I'm tired of looking up at the scoreboard and seeing the team down 2 before the games 10 minutes old.

I agree with the majority of what you are saying. Just wanted to give you a fact check. 2006 was a full season not a shortened season. Also tonights game will be the halfway point of the season.
At first the Gleason trade made me a little nervous following the Westgarth move. This is a significant loss of toughness/deterant but after losing Boulerice for the Doug Weight trade the remainder of the season and playoffs was played without an enforcer or legitimate fighting threat. Hopefully this works out and Liles does not become another Ozolinsh experiment.

  • UNC_fan4eva Jan 2, 2014

I just don't know why it takes so long for Rutherford to try and fix an obvious problem with his ballclub. It was evident from the first month of play that the Canes had a stout defense and goaltending but an anemic offense and impotent power play.

Puck handling has ALWAYS been an issue with this club. The only reason they actually survived the shortened season and won the Stanley Cup was the timely addition of several masterful puck handlers like Doug Weight and Recchi.

Already a third of the way through the season and finally he makes a significant change. Probably too late and yet another season watching other teams play for the cup.

  • CarolinaHurricanes87 Jan 2, 2014

Biggest changes are needed at the top. New GM, new coach. FIRE JR AND MULLER !!!!

  • gt_football Jan 2, 2014

    Bring back the ICE CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mr. Hans Jan 2, 2014

Canes need to just fold. I mean, really, what purpose do they serve other than giving transplanted northerners a chance to see their teams play in person?

  • sburks1906 Jan 2, 2014

Until something changes, the 'Canes will always be personified with mediocrity.
