I heard on the DG show today that academics were very important to him, and he wasn't highly recruited, so he went to Rice. He did have a terrific freshman year, and when his coach was fired, he decided to transfer. I think the academic reputation of Duke is what attracted him. He looks like he'll make an immediate impact as soon as he plays; too bad he has to sit out a year.

Based upon recent trends at Duke, this guy could possibly turn into a NONE and done.

The entire concept of a student-athlete has turned into a joke anyway. It just took a bit longer for reality to arrive in Durham.

What went with the Duke tradition/policy of not accepting transfers?

  • vt94hokies Apr 22, 2014

Great for this young man and Duke.

Joe Obies is salivating at the thought of him being at Duke.

Agree, it is interesting. Either he went unnoticed in HS or vastly exceeded expectations in his 1st year at Rice. My guess is the latter. Seth Curry was unranked (RSCI) coming out of high school, but Duke saw what he could do while at Liberty and was convinced. Seems to be a similar story here. A few recruiting analysts liken him to a top 25 recruit today.

It's interesting that he was a two star recruit coming out of high school. That's probably how he would up at Rice in the first place.

Comne on, you know you thought something related to Obi Wan also.

Yep. He averaged nearly a double-double as a freshman, but he is not so athletic that he projects as an early departure. He looks like a guy who will be able to contribute right away after his transfer year, but who will be around for 3 full years. This is a really good addition.

  • baldchip Apr 22, 2014

Good job Coach K-looks like he could be good for Duke and the ACC!!
Hope he sticks around for all 3 years!!

  • 45HEELSFAN45 Apr 22, 2014

Dook has been recruiting excellently over the past 4 years, basically getting anyone they want. On the other hand they have been underachieving in March. Let them have their off-season and "Kings of November and December" championships. Lehigh and Mercer say hello :-)

    Duke's downward spiral continues........

  • fbguru Apr 22, 2014

wasnt dook at home watching the Heels play in the tourney this year? Hmm oh by the way he will not be eligible next season he has to sit out a year....Really? You are gonna BRAG about winning ONE more game than Duke? Well, I understand if it makes you feel better since Duke did win the LAST title between the two teams. And DUH, I think we know Obi sits out a year! LOL!

A great get to go along with Luke Kennard in 2015. Okafor is likely out after one year so Obi will fill a big void - literally and figuratively. This guy looks like he's a load. Time will tell if he produces, but given Duke's track record of guys transferring in I'd bet this one will also pay big dividends.

  • ericsgrowing Apr 22, 2014

I am glad he didn't choose a team like UNC that goes to the NIT every few years.

  • fbguru Apr 22, 2014

Maybe they can make it to the round of 32 next season!.......Yeah, he didn't choose UNCheat cause he wants to MAKE it to the NCAA every year, not the NIT, and he wants to take REAL classses, not fake ones. #don'tbejealousdude

  • jmcdow2792 Apr 22, 2014

As long as K can get these players, Duke will be ok. How long will it last?

  • sportznutv2.11 Apr 22, 2014

He can take Alex Murphy's spot on the bench

  • ncdedhed Apr 21, 2014

Wow! Maybe they can make it to the round of 32 next season!
