Fuzzter1 When I said that if they hire Tortorella "I'm done with this team", that's the first time that I said that because nothing else would make me say that. If you have evidence to the contrary, please provide. How often are you going to post things that show you don't have a clue?

And exactly which team do you think would trade a good scorer for Cam?

Penny pinching? Are you kidding me? E Staal and Semin make more than EVERY player on the Blackhawks (Ward makes the same.) Would you like Kane, Keith, Crawford, Toews, Hossa, or Sharp to be Canes for less money?

There have been some terrible contract decisions. Not spending money isn't the issue, spending it wisely is the issue.

Maybe they can lure Mike Keenan away from the KHL. He just won a title over there. Guy doesn't put up with anything from his players, but he isn't quite the headcase that Torts is.

I had thought they might have promoted Daniels when Lavi was fired, but JR said they wanted to go outside the Canes Organization, and as much as Daniels did a great job with the Checkers, it made sense at the time. I agree that Daniels has earned a shot at being the Head Coach for the Canes, but I think Francis will want to go outside the Organization for a "fresh start".

KHEFFN: How many times do you have to post you're "done with this team?" Enough already.

JScott: I agree. Teams in all sports have coaches for a reason, leadership and direction. Players like EStaal think they know everything and pout like * - when things don't go their way. Him getting Lavy fired was incredibly narcissistic.

Right now, we need to cut salary and/or losses and rebuild. Sentiment has no place in pro sports. It's a business, not a family. Frankly, I was surprised how many people attended games this year considering how bad the product they were purchasing.

If Old Man Karmo thinks we, as fans, aren't being "patient enough" with this team, I hope Ronnie infuses a bit of urgency and action to bringing this team back into contention. I hope Ronnie wields a cold and swift sword to this team.

Staal(s), Semin, Ward - gone. They play to support their lifestyles, not to winning. Training camp should start with the "C" and both "As' off sweaters. Earn it.

I'm surprised. You say they shouldn't have hired Muller because he had no head coaching experience but you're comfortable with Francis as GM with no GM experience. I haven't seen him bring in any young players recently and that was his job. I think they need a coach (but not the disaster known as Tortorella) and a GM with experience. This team doesn't need tweaking by a coach and GM learning on the job. It needs a coach and GM that can make a step change. I really admire Francis and I hope I'm wrong about him, but, unfortunately, I'm rarely wrong.

I love Ron Francis, but the Canes don't need someone with no GM experience to do OJT. I can't imagine that any team in the league would be stupid enough to hire Tortorella. If the Canes do it would surpass all other stupid moves the franchise has made as THE MOST stupid. If he's the coach, I'm done with the team. That's about the only thing that would make me say that.

Tracy does a good job. I look forward to listening to the Forslund/Tracy team. They have become a staple for many Caniacs. Turn your focus elsewhere, where it might be helpful.

m 30 games is not a full season workload. After 30 games Khudobin started to falter big time. Check his stats. As for the new coach, I hope he gives Jeff Daniels a shot. The man has done a good job at Charlotte. The last person this team needs is Torts. He is a crazy man who has an ego that is not fit to be a coach.

I don't think that Muller cared whether people liked him or not. E. Staal, Ward and perhaps other veterans didn't agree with the coach. E. Staal didn't agree with Laviolette and look who got fired. Now it has happened again and that is WRONG.

  • thomasew52 May 5, 2014

I liked Kirk, thought he was a good guy. I think this team doesn't need a good guy, or a "players coach". They need some one who is tough, doesn't have time for excuses, and measures player and team performance in wins and losses only. They need a tough coach who doesn't care if he is liked or disliked, whose only objective is putting up points in the standings.

I'm hoping that Ron Francis has more passion for building a winning team than Karmanos has shown. Immediately after winning the Stanley Cup, Karmanos dismantled the team to save money and they haven't done anything since. Stating at the end of the last season that he was happy with the mediocre performance of his coaching staff just seems to reinforce that Karmanos really doesn't have his heart in this. Compare the passion that Karmanos shows for hockey to the passion that Jerry Jones has for football. Whether you love him or hate him, there is no question that Jerry Jones is "all in" for football.

And as to the number of comments... It's the middle of the day on the first work day of the week. How many comments did you want? (On my lunch break now lol).

  • JPack May 5, 2014

Tough break. It was a tough team to coach between JR's hands on style and the "top players" not leading. Hope he lands somewhere else in the NHL. He deserves a real shot.
Btw, of all the changes, the goalie coach makes me the happiest.

  • wlcat609 May 5, 2014

What is 'Lavy' doing these days - after all he did coach the team that WON the Cup here in 2006? My second choice would be Barry Trotz and company - his team played hard in Nashville. If politics get involved, the new guy may be Jeff Daniels.

And hopefully Tripp Tracy impressed enough at NBC that they would hire him so the Canes could get a more PROFESSIONAL color analyst!

    Bull!
I have been a season ticket holder in the Fan Zone since they created it and IT IS NOT SOLD OUT. All you have to do is zoom in when you search for tickets and you'll see seats available to the general public.
The Fan Zone was typically about 2/3 full this season.
Open your eyes and quit believing everything you read.

Sorry to see Coach Kirk go....I agree I thought he was a good guy...would love to have seen the Staals go as well as Ward before Coach Kirk....the Staals have the emotions of a sponge and Ward's time has come and gone....like any good quarterback, a goalie has a shelf life...and that shelf life has expired

Good thing he's under contract for a different team....that also stinks.

  • PowderedToastMan May 5, 2014

  • busyb97 May 5, 2014

Agreed. The former GM tied the coaches hands too often. And if the players wouldn't do what a coach wants, it's not the coach who should get canned, it's the walking ego that should GO!

As far as ticket sales....we also were at most of the games this year- and your mid-week games were lighter of course, but always lots of fans, and a lot of Season Ticket Holders. (Fan Zone is ALWAYS sold out.) So you may not care for them, but a lot of folks still do and still pay money to see them.

  • a sports fan May 5, 2014

Coach is victim of ownership penny pinching, GM incompetence (with a few exceptions draft picks were awful) and poor leadership (Staal and Ward should be leaders but are awful).

Dale Carnegie couldn't have managed this team....

I don't see this team going anywhere. The Triangle area has already shown great support. I was at many games this season and the crowd turnout was great. I really don't think this team is too far away from being good and should be attractive to a lot of coaches...

The lack of comments is a telling sign as to how far this franchise has fallen. Ticket sales are WAY down and fan apathy is WAY up. We may lose this franchise.

  • mike28 May 5, 2014

Muller is a good guy, but he had to go. The team never bought into his system. Honestly, I wish the Canes wouldn't have hired him in the first place. He just didn't have enough experience. I trust that Francis will do the right thing. This team needs to get bigger and more physical to compete in the Eastern Conference. I also think they need to get rid of Ward, Semin and others and make a fresh start. Not sure I like the idea of Tort as our next coach, but maybe he can bring an edge to this team that they need. Surprised to see them fire Dave Lewis. Feel bad for Tripp Tracey.... now he is going to have to pick another person for his on air man crush...

  • dwntwnboy2 May 5, 2014

"I thought Paul Maurice was still coach"- well, in the circular nature of the Hurricanes....they might just hire him a third time! LOL

  • common tater May 5, 2014

Agree he wasn't given a great shot, but also agree Francis didn't have much choice. I'm not confident another coach will do better, there's too many other negative factors in play. Hope Francis can stop this runaway train...they may not have a lot of time before the track ends.

  • rduwxboy May 5, 2014

Huh. I thought Paul Maurice was still coach. Oh well . . .

  • RaleighHunts May 5, 2014

I agree that Cam probably will not be here in a couple years, now that it seems Anton can handle a full workload and has historically always had a consistently high save PCT. I DO NOT agree about E. Stall. He can still lead this team to the playoffs. That I am confident of.

  • tayled May 5, 2014

Problem wasn't the coach from what I hear.

You think Francis will go after Tort? He's so different than any other coach the Canes have had. Have to admit, it would be fun to see what Tort would do with the attitudes of some players.

  • evadbbat May 5, 2014

He was above .500 this year. :)

  • washington_irving May 5, 2014

Looks like the door is open for Tortoralla to be the next coach. If the Canes can't get rid of Staal/Ward, maybe the Torch approach is in order. Sad to see Muller leave, he seemed like a good guy but the coaching staff is the easiest to restructure and a no brainer for Ron in his new job.

  • PanthersFan45 May 5, 2014

Muller did a pretty good job with what he had. I think Ron Francis is going to give this team a fresh "reboot" from the coaching on down to some of the players. I blame JR for some of Mullers misfortune. JR continuously recycled players and he even recycled Paul Maurice. I think one person who will be unloaded in the next season or 2 will be Cam Ward. His contract makes him hard to trade though. I anticipate more moves from Francis (yet to come).

I get what you're saying. Muller is a good guy, but he was put in a very difficult situation between trying to please management and certain players like Staal. For some reason some older players didn't "buy into" his system, and without their support the Canes would never succeed.

This is really unfortunate. Muller should have been given the chance to lead this team on his own, not always having to bow to the wishes of upper level management especially as regards who to start in goal. I do trust Ron Francis, though, and I hope that this decision pays off.

  • oldandgrumpy May 5, 2014

Good decision. Three years...no playoffs. Time for a change.
