Blog: UNC rallies to beat NC State in OT, 85-84

Posted February 26, 2014

FINAL: UNC 85, NC State 84: UNC trailed NC State for nearly 35 minutes of regulation Wednesday night, but took the lead late and forced overtime where they topped the Wolfpack, 85-84. Marcus Paige scored 35 points and JP Tokoto had a double-double with 16 and 10 for UNC. TJ Warren led all scorers with 36 points.

End of Regulation: NC State 71, UNC 71: After a bizarre sequence in the final we will head to overtime at PNC Arena with UNC and NC State tied at 71.

3:26 2nd: UNC 60, NC State 59: UNC has taken their first lead since the 16:11 mark of the first half and will be going to the line up one out of the final media break of the game.

7:45 2nd: NC State 52, UNC 51: NC State has not trailed since early in the first half, but UNC continues to stay within a possession as each team is struggling offensively and foul trouble is becoming an issue.

Beejay Anya and TJ Warren have each gone to the bench with four fouls for NC State. UNC has four players with three.

11:37 2nd: NC State 42, UNC 38: UNC had multiple chances in the last few minutes to take the lead but have struggled from the floor and the line as the Wolfpack have maintained the lead for the last 25 minutes of game time.

15:44 2nd: NC State 37, UNC 32: UNC has trimmed an eight-point halftime deficit to five at the first media timeout although the energy in the building seems to be neutral-to-none.

JP Tokoto leads UNC with eight points and five rebounds.

3:38 1st: NC State 28, UNC 19: The Wolfpack are holding on to a 9-point lead in large part to BeeJay Anya's eight points and three rebounds.

The Heels are not helping themselves as they have eight turnovers that have led to nine NC State points.

10:55 1st: NC State 13, UNC 13: TJ Warren has a game-high six points to lead the Wolfpack, but UNC has four different players on the scoreboard and the teams are level at 13 midway through the first half.

15:19 1st: NC State 6, UNC 5: TJ Warren has four points and Ralston Turner has hit a baseline jumper as the Wolfpack lead UNC at the first media break, 6-5.

UNC has just one field goal on nine tries and Kennedy Meekd leads the Tar Heels with three points.

20:00 1st: NC State vs. UNC: In what is certainly an important game for each team as far as their positioning in the ACC, both NC State and UNC will start familiar lineups.

PREGAME

The red hot North Carolina Tar Heels continue their quest to move up the ACC standings, as they take on local rival NC State in a league bout Wednesday night at PNC Arena. The game will tip at 8 p.m. on WRAL-TV.

After a seven week absence from the Top 25, Roy Williams squad re-entered this week, thanks to a nine-game win streak, that has all but erased a poor 1-4 start to league play. The Tar Heels are coming off an impressive 105-72 rout of Wake Forest his past weekend to pick up their 20th win of the season. At 10-4 in league play, UNC holds down fourth place in the conference standings.

Mark Gottlieb's Wolfpack are a solid 17-10 on the season, but conference play has prove to be much more challenging than the non-league slate, with NC State at an even 7-7 in the ACC. The Wolfpack pulled even in the league with Saturday's 71-64 win at Virginia Tech.

North Carolina holds a 149-76 lead in this longstanding rivalry. The Tar Heels have won 15 of the last 16 meetings and are seeking the regular-season sweep after posting an 84-70 win in Chapel Hill on Feb. 1.

The Tar Heels have fought through adversity this season and come out better for it from a team standpoint. A dangerous offensive squad, UNC is averaging a solid 77.0 ppg on .463 shooting. The team also enjoys positives in both rebounding (+6.2) and turnover (+1.6) margins. Guard Marcus Paige has taken on a leadership role this season and has flourished as both a prolific scorer (16.9 ppg) and deft distributor (4.6 apg). James Michael McAdoo adds frontcourt balance with 14.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per outing. Leslie McDonald (11.3 ppg), Brice Johnson (10.3 ppg, 6.4 rpg), J.P. Tokoto (9.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg) and Kennedy Meeks (7.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg) provide more than enough depth.

North Carolina was at its offensive best against Wake Forest this past weekend, erupting for 105 points, scoring 50+ points in both halves. The Tar Heels shot a sizzling 57.4 percent from the floor overall, including an impressive 11-of-15 from behind the arc. Six Tar Heels notched double figures in the balanced attack. McDonald led the way with 19 points. Meeks added 15, followed by Johnson (14 pts), Paige (13 pts), McAdoo (11 pts) and Tokoto (11 pts).

NC State lacks the scoring depth that UNC has, but the team's trump card is standout forward T.J. Warren. A favorite to earn ACC Player of the Year, Warren leads the conference and ranks fifth in the nation in scoring at 23.3 ppg. The 6-foot-8 sophomore also finds time to lead the team in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and steals (44). Ralston Turner is a distant second in the scoring column for NC State at 10.2 ppg. Anthony Barber (9.4 ppg) and Desmond Lee (9.3 ppg) are just under the double-digit mark.

Warren was at it again in the win over Virginia Tech, posting his sixth 30- point game of the season, finishing with 31 points, on 12-of-21 shooting. Kyle Washington added 13 points and Tyler Lewis doled out a game-high 11 assists in the win for NC State, which offset a poor performance from long range (4- of-24) by outscoring Virginia Tech 38-22 in the paint and adding 19 points off 17 Hokie turnovers.

A dynamic scorer, Warren keeps NC State in most games. However, North Carolina has all but assured itself of an NCAA Tournament berth with its recent run and isn't about to ruin that by faltering down the stretch.

    Hots UNC?

    Who edits this stuff?

  • GoHeels1969 Feb 26, 2014

Why does the Wolpfack have the "hots" for Carolina? Is this going to be their "coming out" game? ;-)

  • Rabid_Wolf_3 Feb 26, 2014

    NC State 'hots' UNC?

    Should that say 'host'

Amen to that !! Just recently they had the Duke-UNC game on WRAL and ESPN (both) so you could basically pick your broadcast team. Vitale & Bilas on ESPN or Dan Bonner over on WRAL ... choice was a no-brainer for me. Having said that, I think UNC will stay on a roll here, Heels have been playing at their best lately, even hitting free throws. Roy must be pleased with this win streak.

  • BeastieBoy Feb 26, 2014

A team with any class at all wouldn't run up a score like was done against WF. A respectable margin after it's "in-the-bag" is sufficient. The only thing UNC accomplished is letting everyone know just how "class-less" they really are. Tables will turn someday.

  • Rabid_Wolf_3 Feb 26, 2014

    Mark Gottlieb's Wolfpack are a solid 17-10

Has anyone in WRAL proof read this story?

  • GoHeels1969 Feb 26, 2014

LOL, wral fixed the title but still has a link to "inside the rivalry" that compares Duke [sic] and State. Um, pretty sure the Blue Devils aren't playing tonight...

  • UNC_fan4eva Feb 26, 2014

Another yawner at the Tyler Zeller Indoor Arena. Tarheels rout the wuffies by 10 ...or more.
