UNC can learn from Duke's defeat
Posted September 16, 2013
Duke and UNC are on opposite sides of the wishbone defense this week.
The Blue Devils may have lost to Georgia Tech, 38-14, but they can't stew on that. They are unlikely to face a similar defense for the rest of the season, so they need to put that tape on the shelf and focus on the next obstacle. They can win Saturday against Pittsburgh.
The Tar Heels are the next to face Vad Lee and the Yellow Jackets. They've had a week off to pull out their wishbone tape and study up if they hope to be able to win Saturday.
After that, the fast-paced UNC offense will see a rested East Carolina team. Both like to push the tempo, but ECU has the bye week to work on an already powerful air attack.
The Pirates have essentially a three-game season, and they are already one in the hole with the loss Saturday to Virginia Tech. They have two more ACC games – at Carolina Sept. 28 and at NC State Nov. 23. Aside from those three, I expect ECU to win out, so it is against ACC competition where they will prove themselves.
Speaking of NC State, they're in the Thursday spotlight against a more talented Clemson team, so the only way for them to win will be to find another way. It might be a fake punt, an onside kick, some stolen possessions. The Wolfpack need to use the turnover ratio to their advantage to overcome their underdog status.
