It may only be November, but Tobacco Road has another Final Four, another possible national championship in the offing.
Both the University of North Carolina and Duke University teams made the field hockey Final Four with wins Sunday afternoon.
The Tar Heels are perennials in the postseason finale – having appeared in the Final Four five years in row – but for Duke it's their first trip since 2006.
“I’m excited for our Tar Heels to be going to the final four,” said UNC coach Karen Shelton, who is in her 33rd year with the program and has coached the Tar Heels to six NCAA crowns. “It never ever gets old and it’s never easy to get there."
UNC topped Wake Forest 5-2 Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Heels take on the University of Connecticut Friday at 4:45 p.m. It will be a rematch of a regular season game that UNC won, 2-1.
Duke plays in the first semifinal, Friday at 2 p.m. against Maryland. The Devils advanced on a 4-1 win over Massachusetts Sunday.
