UNC earns No. 1 seed for 2014 ACC Women's Tennis Championship

— North Carolina holds the top seed for the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Championship, which begins on Wednesday, April 23 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

The Tar Heels (23-4, 12-2 ACC) will take on the winner of No. 8 Florida State (14-11, 6-8) and No. 9 Syracuse (5-14, 5-9) in quarterfinal action on Friday at 9 a.m. North Carolina will enter the Championship in search of its seventh ACC championship and first since 2011.

Carolina is the top seed in the Championship for the second-straight season and the third time in the last five years.

Wednesday’s first-round action will begin with No. 12 Maryland (8-12, 4-10) playing No. 13 Wake Forest (11-12, 3-11), No. 10 Boston College (13-9, 5-9) squaring off against No. 15 Pitt (4-14, 0-14) and No. 11 Virginia Tech (12-12, 4-10) taking on No. 14 NC State (8-13, 2-12).

No. 5 Duke (21-3, 11-3) will take on the winner of Maryland/Wake Forest, while No. 6 Georgia Tech (12-8, 9-5) will take on the winner of Virginia Tech/NC State. No. 7 Notre Dame (15-8, 8-6), competing in its first ACC Championship, will face the winner of Boston College/Pitt.

Teams that received double-byes to Friday’s quarterfinals along with North Carolina include No. 2 Miami (18-4, 12-2), No. 3 Virginia (18-5, 12-2) and No. 4 Clemson (20-5, 12-2).

Action in the 2014 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship will start on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. and conclude on Sunday, April 27 at 11 a.m. with the championship match.
