Chapel Hill, N.C. — Before her team took the court at Carmichael Arena Wednesday night, Sylvia Hatchell, the head coach of the University of North Carolina women's basketball team used Twitter to update them on her current challenge – the fight against leukemia.
She posted that she couldn't wait to watch her team over the Internet, and she followed it up with a photo of her freshly shaved head bearing a painted Tar Heel.
Hatchell has stepped away from the sidelines while she works on her health. Associate head coach Andrew Calder, a veteran of 28 seasons under Hatchell, guided the team to a 111-50 exhibition victory over Carson-Newman.
Before the game, Hatchell's administrative assistant Jane High said, "We just know the spirit of Coach Hatchell is in this place. It never leaves. And she's watching us on goheels.com right now."
"We feel her," said Gary Triplett of the Tar Heels Booster Club. "We're anxious for her to come back. The bench is too quiet."
Other fans made sure to convey their well wishes to the coach.
"Coach Hatchell, you're not here but we are here and we are keeping you here in our spirit," said Lillian Lee.
