Doak Field at Dail Park will be the site this weekend of a top-10 rivalry series, pitting the nation’s two hottest teams after the latest college baseball polls were released Monday. For the 10th consecutive week, the University of North Carolina is the consensus No. 1 team in the nation, claiming the top spot in all four major polls.
After a 5-0 week that included a weekend sweep of Duke, the Tar Heels saw their record move to 39-2 and they are tied with North Carolina State (32-10, 14-7 ACC) with the nation’s longest win streak at 14 games. The two teams will square off this weekend in a three-game set Raleigh.
NC State’s perfect slate last week included a sweep of then-No. 14 Georgia Tech and the Wolfpack were rewarded in each of the polls. They made a nine-spot jump in the Baseball America poll to get to No. 6, a 10-spot jump in the Perfect Game poll that also lists them as No. 6, a five-spot leap in the USA Today poll that has them at No. 11 and a six spot climb in the College Baseball Newspaper poll to No. 9.
The national RPI polls have the Tar Heels as a clear-cut No. 1 with NC State checking in at No. 8.
NC State has never reached No. 1 in the polls, but attained the No. 2 spot in both 1993 and 2003. UNC won two of three against the Wolfpack a year ago in the regular season, then added a third win during the ACC tournament. UNC holds an edge in the all-time series 154-128-1.
Elsewhere around the ACC, Virginia (35-5, 16-5 ACC) checked in at No. 5 in the majority of the polls, Florida State (31-9, 13-8 ACC) lived on or near No. 10 and Georgia Tech (27-13, 11-10 ACC) fell to No. 20. Clemson cracked the top 25 in the Baseball America poll at No. 25.
UNC-Wilmington (30-11) is ranked in three of the four polls this week, getting as high as No. 21 in the Perfect Game rankings. LSU (37-4), Vanderbilt (35-6) and Cal-State Fullerton (34-6) fill the top five in all polls.
