UNC, NC State to battle at DBAP in April as only meeting

Posted January 14, 2014

After a flaw in scheduling did not have UNC and NC State playing each other in baseball this year, the head coaches came together to schedule a non-conference meeting at DBAP.

Both head coaches, UNC's Mike Fox and NC State's Elliott Avent, were on hand in Durham Tuesday to announce the one-time neutral site showdown between the two national baseball powers taking place April 15 at 7 pm.

Each insisted that this will be the only time that scheduling issues force such measures.

The midweek, non-conference game will be the latest installment in a storied rivalry that has ascended to national prominence. After both teams were featured on a preseason Baseball America cover shot at the DBAP last spring, the matchup reached fever pitch in May when the two squads met in a round-robin game of the ACC Baseball Championship at the DBAP. The battle turned out to be the longest game in ACC Tournament history, a marathon 2-1, 18-inning victory for the Tar Heels. That epic clash took place in front of 11,392 fans, the largest crowd ever to watch a college baseball game in the state of North Carolina.

"I'm excited for our players and coaches to have the opportunity to play this game at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. College baseball is growing and thriving in this area and I think you've seen evidence of that with the huge crowds we've played in front of at the last two ACC tournaments,” said Fox. “We are looking forward to another great turnout by Tar Heel fans all season and on April 15."

NC State won a coin flip to earn the designation as the game’s home team and will play out the DBAP’s first base dugout.

"We're excited for the opportunity to play in the Duel at the DBAP,” said Avent. “Our players are thrilled, our fans have already marked it on their calendars, and we're looking forward to adding another chapter to this storied rivalry."

Tickets will be $10 and are on sale now at Group tickets for parties of 20 or more and hospitality areas are available and can be purchased by calling the Bulls group sales team at 919.956.BULL ext. 2.

I heard Coach Avent say that Rodon won't be pitching for this game. I don't understand that at all. Why would he say Rodon isn't going to pitch a game to be played in April - in January? His explanation was that the game would be taking place during conference play and those games are very important. Sounds odd to me.

It would behoove the leaders to make sure these two teams play each other 2 times per year; somehow.

How could whoever makes the schedules not see that there was no UNC vs State game?? I'm Tarheel and I always look forward to these games, Glad they decided to at least play one during the season.

Last year's game was one for the ages! I kept telling myself I'd go to bed at the end of each inning, but I couldn't tear myself away from the TV. When it got past 1 AM, I wanted ANY team to score a run. Glad it was UNC!

State should be really good this year with Rodon pitching - that guy is amazing.

This is a good thing. The children should stay at home and do their homework and make comments on WRAL.

I was at the 2011 ACC Tourney when NC State and Georgia Tech went 15 innings to set longest innings played in an ACC Tourney. Tech won 6-5.

Was at that NC State - UNC game last year and saw one of the best college baseball games ever. That game set the new ACC record at 18 innings.

I think State takes this upcoming game. Hope I get o watch it.
