UNC planning 'Stripe Out' for SDSU game

Posted August 1, 2014

Kenan Stripe Out map

— The University of North Carolina will wear Carolina Blue and black uniforms against San Diego State Sept. 6, and are encouraging fans to coordinate their colors for a "Kenan Stadium Tar Pit Stripe Out."

UNC fans are asked to wear Carolina Blue or black to the 8 p.m. game vs. the Aztecs based on their section of seats. Carolina students are asked to wear black and sit in the Tar Pit student section in the west end zone.

"We wanted to create an event and an environment that continues to connect our team to The Tar Pit and also incorporates the entire stadium." said head coach Larry Fedora. "Carolina Blue is our school color but we want to incorporate the black tar from the Tar Heel foot logo and build on the success of last year's Zero Dark Thursday game."

UNC fans coordinated to all wear black for their Oct. 17 game last season against Miami. The then-No. 10 ranked Hurricanes held on to beat the Tar Heels in the nationally televised game, 27-23.

Similarly, the UNC basketball team executed a "stripe out" for their Feb. 15 game against Pittsburgh where fans alternated Carolina Blue and white based on section. UNC won that game 75-71.

Official Kenan Stadium Tar Pit Stripe Out t-shirts can be purchased for $14 in the stadium during the Liberty (Sept. 30) and San Diego State games. Students will be able to purchase stripe out shirts for $12 by showing their UNC One Card at Chapel Hill Sportswear on non-game days.

Shirts are also available UNC Student Stores and will be available for sale at Carolina's "Meet The Heels" event on Saturday.

You are right - the shirts were there so it was much easier. With no free shirts, I can't see this being a huge success because lots of fans don't check twitter/wral.com and won't know about it. Either way it's a good idea to sell more merchandise so whatever.

It is news when that's all you get. The entire WRAL sports staff must be on vacation. I'm ready for some football talk. I get more ACC news from ESPN who likes to pretend the ACC does not exist, believe it or not.

That black helmet with Carolina blue NC looks awesome together. Stadium should look great. Can't wait to see it in person, section 109 for us.

  • lgboro Aug 1, 2014

Should wear orange and white and then maybe the players won't have to change in case a player is picked up by the police during the game.

Can't say 100%, but pretty sure fans found shirts waiting for them in their seats when they arrived.

Well when you have not been ranked at the end of the season since the mid-90's, this is all you got.
