UNC replaces Ohio State with Cal on future football schedules

Chapel Hill, N.C. — The University of North Carolina has swapped Power 5 schools to their upcoming football schedules as they agreed Wednesday to a home-and-home series with the University of California, replacing a similar series with Ohio State.
UNC will host the Cal, out of the PAC-12, in 2017 and make the trip to Berkeley in 2018. Ohio State was forced to add a ninth game to their Big Ten conference schedule after the league expanded leaving the series with UNC vulnerable to cancellation.
UNC and Cal have never played each other in football and the Tar Heels have not played a current PAC-12 school since 2005. The last time they played in the state of California was in 1998 when they played at Stanford.
With the addition of Cal, UNC will now play teams in three of the five power conferences over the next three seasons plus Notre Dame.
