UNC's Hairston pays fine for last traffic violation

Posted October 16, 2013

University of North Carolina guard P.J. Hairston’s legal troubles are over. Hairston paid the fine and court fee Friday on the last of his outstanding charges from traffic stops over the summer, the Durham district attorney’s office said Wednesday.

On May 13, Hairston was pulled over for speeding in a Chevrolet Camaro. The address on that rental traced back to convicted felon and party promoter Haydn "Fats" Thomas. The court date was pushed back to this past Friday, where Hairston paid a $15 fee for the ticket and $188 in court costs.

On June 5, he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license when he was stopped in a silver Yukon at a checkpoint in Durham.

Durham County prosecutors dismissed those charges on July 22 after Hairston showed proof that he had a driver's license and had completed a drug assessment program.

Hairston was cited in July with speeding and careless and reckless driving. First Sgt. Jeff Gordon, with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, said Hairston was driving 93 mph in a 65 mph zone on southbound Interstate 85 near Salisbury. Hairston pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and paid a fine.  PJ Hairston "GRIND" tweet Hairston returns to practice, issues apology

North Carolina head basketball coach Roy Williams suspended the Tar Heels’ leading scorer following his third arrest. Williams said Hairston has earned his way back to practice, but he will sit out some games when the season begins Nov. 8. The number of games has yet to be determined.

"He knows he made a series of mistakes and understands very clearly that he embarrassed his family, our program and the university," Williams said in the statement.

With everything that has transpired with Hairston's police problems, if it had happened to an employee of the school or for that matter anyone of us, we would have been fired by the next day.

A good example of how well athletes are treated in our courts and by their attorneys!
