UNC's Hairston will play, 'but not all the games'

Posted August 15, 2013

North Carolina's PJ Hairston tries to dribble out the clock to seal the Tar Heels' 79-76 victory over Maryland in the 60th ACC Tournament on Saturday, March 16, 2013 in Greensboro, NC (Photo by Jack Morton).

— University of North Carolina guard P.J. Hairston will play for the Tar Heels in 2013-14, but will undoubtedly miss some action due to suspension, according to Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham.

According to the Twitter account of UNC professor Andy Bechtel, Cunningham was asked Thursday at a faculty retreat if the junior from Greensboro would play for the Tar Heels in the upcoming year. Bechtel wrote that Cunningham replied, “Yes, but not all the games.”

Later in the afternoon Thursday, Hairston tweeted from his recently reinstated account, “God didn't give me another chance for no reason #GRIND”. That tweet was later deleted.

PJ Hairston "GRIND" tweet

A UNC spokesperson told WRAL Thursday that there is no official change in Hairston's status and Cunningham’s comment at the faculty retreat was what he believes will happen.

Hairston’s summer has been checkered with legal issues and associations with a convicted felon that led to the university levying an indefinite suspension. The school announced the suspension July 29 following a third traffic violation in less than three months.

On May 13, Hairston was pulled over for speeding in a rented Chevrolet Camaro that traced back to convicted felon and party promoter Haydn "Fats" Thomas.

On June 5, he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license when he was stopped in a silver Yukon at a checkpoint in Durham. That vehicle was also rented by Thomas.

Those charges against Hairston were dismissed when he completed a drug assessment and provided proof of a valid license.

UNC head basketball coach Roy Williams refused to answer questions Wednesday related to Hairston following a pro-am event at the Wyndham Championship golf tournament in Greensboro.

"I'm not talking about P.J. I've read about it all damn summer," Williams said Wednesday. "I'm tired of reading about it. I'm tired of talking about it.

"It's been a little hectic and some things that make it not as much fun," Williams added. "This is a good release out here getting on the golf course. I've enjoyed the heck out of it today. It's been a hard summer. No question about that."

UNC’s basketball kick-off event, Late Night with Roy, is scheduled for Oct. 25. The Tar Heels’ season schedule is yet to be released.

It all boils down to dismissed charges for a misdemeanor amount of pot, and two speeding tickets. Unless the NCAA finds something with Fats, there isn't much left to do or say. Whether you did it at 16 or 50 everyone in these threads has well exceeded the speed limit on the interstate and either got caught or were lucky enough to not.

Durham DA got a "sweet" payoff for getting him off. The Rams Club came through big time. The Carowhina way!

So the gun wasn't his, and neither was the car. At least the drugs were his.

Right. Exactly right. PJ put countless lives in danger driving 93 mph weaving in and out of traffic. Much worse than someone backing up against a wall.

I'm sorry, in whose car did he get those "speeding tickets" again?

Hmmmm... does becoming an NBA player making millions more than "Egg Sucking Whiners" indicate "success" in life? If that is the criteria for being labeled "successful" I don't want it! Although I firmly believe that I'd manage both my life and money better than many of the current NBA or NFL players if I had that opportunity. The "fact" that this is something often seen in comments to this forum - that so-and-so "VERY GOOD" collegiate athlete in football or basketball, no matter how serious their issues may be and no matter how much "trouble they may get into" and how "unsuccessful" they may be as a collegiate STUDENT - will, regardless of it all, make millions more than at least 95-98% of us - is somehow a "justification" or an "excuse" or whatever? Are we to the point that we simply shrug our shoulders and say "Oh well, he's a really "bad dude" and he really screwed up... but - BUT he will make millions as a pro - and that makes him someone to "look up to", to admire, to imulate, to be a "role model"?

A truly "novel thought"- for those who are academically and motivationally not "cut out " to be a genuine student, and who may or may not also have "character issues" - why not come up with a way for them to "slide right out of high school - or middles school or whatever - into the NFL or NBA... or at least a "developmental/rookie or whatever you want to call it... league? VOILA!!! The athlete gets what they truly want - to do nothing but "play ball", and live whatever lifestyle they wish off the field/court, and the Universities do not have to deal with such "C*AP" as the Hairston situation. But wait... that would mean the NFL/NBA would lose the "Goose" that lays them "Golden Eggs" at no cost to them! And the Universities would lose a number of truly entertaining, exciting athletes that may - MAY - lead their team to the "promised land"!

NC Tate, and all kinds of big name schools like Dook wanted PJ. He has not beaten any men or women up. Speeding tickets and weed - yea. Whatever lifestyle he choses, being an NBA player will likely be a part of it. He will make millions more than me, or any of you Egg Sucking Whiners. These are all simple facts!

Most everyone here posts their conspiracy theories and opinions and all about what PJ or Roy thinks or should think, or what the NCAA is going to do or needs to do.

The NCAA is a nonprofit in a dilemma. It is increasingly scared to death of lawsuits of any kind especially by a player. College Football and Basketball have become much bigger than the NCAA. Blame that on the NFL, NBA and Money. I hate to see this happen, but to survive the NCAA wants to get out of investigating and enforcement and just stick to brackets. This is what has happened folks and it is what it is!

Nah, UNC reported whatever their senile former state governor was told he was gonna find at the conclusion of his bogus investigation...
