UNC's Hairston will play, 'but not all the games'

— University of North Carolina guard P.J. Hairston will play for the Tar Heels in 2013-14, but will undoubtedly miss some action due to suspension, according to Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham.

According to the Twitter account of UNC professor Andy Bechtel, Cunningham was asked Thursday at a faculty retreat if the junior from Greensboro would play for the Tar Heels in the upcoming year. Bechtel wrote that Cunningham replied, “Yes, but not all the games.”

Later in the afternoon Thursday, Hairston tweeted from his recently reinstated account, “God didn't give me another chance for no reason #GRIND”. That tweet was later deleted.

A UNC spokesperson told WRAL Thursday that there is no official change in Hairston's status and Cunningham’s comment at the faculty retreat was what he believes will happen.

Hairston’s summer has been checkered with legal issues and associations with a convicted felon that led to the university levying an indefinite suspension. The school announced the suspension July 29 following a third traffic violation in less than three months.

On May 13, Hairston was pulled over for speeding in a rented Chevrolet Camaro that traced back to convicted felon and party promoter Haydn "Fats" Thomas.

On June 5, he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license when he was stopped in a silver Yukon at a checkpoint in Durham. That vehicle was also rented by Thomas.

Those charges against Hairston were dismissed when he completed a drug assessment and provided proof of a valid license.

UNC head basketball coach Roy Williams refused to answer questions Wednesday related to Hairston following a pro-am event at the Wyndham Championship golf tournament in Greensboro.

"I'm not talking about P.J. I've read about it all damn summer," Williams said Wednesday. "I'm tired of reading about it. I'm tired of talking about it.

"It's been a little hectic and some things that make it not as much fun," Williams added. "This is a good release out here getting on the golf course. I've enjoyed the heck out of it today. It's been a hard summer. No question about that."

UNC’s basketball kick-off event, Late Night with Roy, is scheduled for Oct. 25. The Tar Heels’ season schedule is yet to be released.

If PJ had a valid NC Drivers license (as was alleged), then why would he be issued another new drivers license number on July 16th 2013... Just a couple of days before he got the sweet deal? Did they not know about his prayer for Judgement on his previous "Driving without a license" and Speeding (on a different "Inactive" Drivers License ID Number) on July 16th, 2011 in Wake County?

In North Carolina, you're only allowed 1 PJC every three years, per household. If, within 3 years, you commit the same offense or something very similar, the Court revokes the PJC and charges you with both offenses at that time.

I guess the law only applies to non-UNC-CHeat ballers. That must be the Carolina Way.

Of course he will play, that university has it's head up its arzz so far they wouldn't know how to discipline anyone because they are all in denial still

With all the other stuff that has happened at UNC with the athletic program over the past couple of years was there any doubt he would play. Not only will he play, but he will not miss any of the games that would put UNC in danger of a bad season. In other words he will miss games up until ACC competition begins.

    Knock, knock!!

    Who is it?

The NCAA, we are here for another investigation, get ready to shut down all sports at UNC for illegal contribution and ineligible players.

Was there any doubt that he'd play this coming season?

UNC no longer has any standards, except that if the athlete is a star, they'll find a way to get him on the field or on the court.

You mean like ALL schools do when a player gets suspended games before the season.

  • 903 PJ suspended til NCAA clears Aug 15, 4:06 p.m.

The Fats impermissible benefits still needs to be investigated before anyone can say if PJ plays another game in a UNC uniform or not. Wonder why it's taking so long for the details of that connection to unfold?
