Florida Atlantic rallies to beat UNC, 3-2, forces winner-take-all

Posted June 2, 2013

FINAL: Florida Atlantic did not get their first hit until the seventh inning, but it was a 3-run home run by Ricky Santiago that put the Owls in front and they held on for a 3-2 win at Boshamer Stadium Sunday. The two teams will meet again Monday night with the winner advancing to the super regional round.

End 8: UNC is down to their final three outs as the game moves to the ninth, still 3-2.

End 7: Hobbs Johnson was pulled after giving up a walk to start the inning despite a no-hitter in the making. Another walk later, FAU 8-hole hitter Ricky Santiago hit a 3-run home run to spoil the no-hitter, shutout and UNC lead.

UNC has stranded 13 runners, eight in scoring position.

Line score right now:

UNC - 2-10-1

FAU - 3-1-0

Mid 7: UNC leaves two more runners on base making it 13 now for the game. They have left a runner in scoring position in every inning but still lead 2-0 after 7.

Hobbs Johnson got out of a bases loaded jam to close the 6th inning. FAU is still hitless as the runners reached on an error and two walks.

Mid 6: FAU got out of a bases loaded, no-out situation by inducing a 1-2-3 double play off of Colin Moran's bat and UNC stranded two more runners (11 through 6 innings). The Tar Heels lead 2-0 mid 6.

Mid 5: UNC got three hits in the fifth inning and scored a run on a sac fly by Russell, they now lead FAU 2-0. The Tar Heels have stranded nine runners through five innings.

Mid 4: Chaz Frank is 3-for-3 but UNC has left a runner in scoring position in all four innings - seven already for the game. The Tar Heels are clinging to 1-0 lead on FAU, Mid 4.

Mid 3: Bo Logan fielded a comebacker for FAU and the Tar Heels stranded two more runners - that's six in three innings. UNC still leads 1-0 Mid 3.

End 2: Hobbs Johnson has posted nothing but zeroes through two innings. UNC comes up to bat with a 1-0 lead.

Mid 2: For the second consecutive inning, UNC leaves men on the corners. The Tar Heels lead FAU 1-0 in the middle of the second but have already left four men on base.

Mid 1: UNC is playing as the visitors in Sunday's elimination game against Florida Atlantic. In their first at-bat, Colin Moran singled home Chaz Frank and the Tar Heels lead the Owls. 1-0.

After dropping their opener to Towson on Friday, Florida Atlantic rebounded to win two in a row, including the rematch against the Tigers Sunday, and will square off against North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Regional final Sunday night.

The Owls fell behind 3-0 after one inning Sunday, but rallied to go ahead after five and broke a 5-5 tie with a run in the ninth, earning their 41st win on the year. UNC-NCSU Scores, schedule for the NCAA Baseball Championships

Sunday night’s game between Florida Atlantic and UNC is slated for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill. UNC is expected to throw Hobbs Johnson who is 4-0 with a 2.14 ERA in 14 starts this year. Johnson was the starter for the Tar Heels last weekend in the record-breaking 18-inning game against NC State.

A UNC win will advance them to the Super Regional were they will face the winner of Sunday night’s game between Liberty and South Carolina. An Owls win would force a winner-take-all game Monday night at 6 p.m.

That almost sounds like KMOR/Buffy. Not sure why it is on here whining about baseball with hundreds of other channels to watch. I'm sure Garbage Canz would much rather see reruns of Richard Simmons workouts.
