Blog: UNC routs Old Dominion in record-setting day, 80-20

Posted November 22, 2013
Updated November 23, 2013

FINAL: UNC 80, Old Dominion 20: The University of North Carolina set a program record with 80 points Saturday as they routed Old Dominion to become bowl eligible in an 80-20 win. Tar Heels quarterback Marquise Williams set a UNC record with five TD passes, TJ Logan added three TD runs and the team amassed over 700 yards of total offense.

3:54 3rd: UNC 80, ODU 20: Ryan Switzer is adding insult to injury as he goes 64 yards on the punt return for a TD and the Tar Heels have now hung 80 points on ODU with more than a quarter still to play.

5:33 3rd: UNC 73, ODU 20: TJ Logan scored for the fourth time today as he reversed field and picked up some blocking on a 63-yard TD. UNC has now set a school record for points in a game with 73.

9:44 3rd: UNC 66, ODU 20: Old Dominion kept UNC out of the endzone, but still relinquished a field goal as the Tar Heels have tied a school record for points in a game with 66.

UNC set the school mark for points in a game with 66 points against Idaho a year ago,

12:15 3rd: UNC 63, ODU 20: On the ensuing kickoff after the ODU touchdown, TJ Logan returned it 99 yards to the house marking his third score of the game and the Tar Heels have eclipsed the 60-point mark.

12:27 3rd: UNC 56, ODU 20: With a quick response to UNC's latest touchdown, an 81-yard run by Gerard Johnson set up a 2-yard TD reception by Marquel Thomas and the scoreboard now reads 56-20 in favor of UNC.

13:31 3rd: UNC 56, ODU 13: Just a minute and a half into the second half, Khris Francis got into the scoring party for UNC as he found the endzone from 28 yards out and the Tar Heels now lead 56-13.

1:03 2nd: UNC 49, ODU 13: Marquise Williams has set a school record with five TD passes as the Tar Heels have scored on six consecutive possessions and lead ODU 49-13.

Williams has also shattered the school record for passing yards in a half as he is now up to 379.

2:31 2nd: UNC 42, ODU 13: TJ Logan found the endzone for the second time of the first half as UNC is in complete control over ODU, 42-13.

Marquise Williams has thrown for a one-half school record 363 yards already and has added four TDs.

7:50 2nd: UNC 35, ODU 13: Marquise Williams connected on his fourth TD pass of the first half and second to Ryan Switzer as the 57-yard strike puts the Tar Heels up 35-13 midway through the second quarter.

14:05 2nd: UNC 28, ODU 13: The scoring frenzy continues as Marquise Williams finds Ryan Switzer for his third TD of the first half, this time capping a four-play drive.

14:56 1st; UNC 21, ODU 13: TJ Logan plunged ahead from 1-yard out on the first play of the second quarter and the Tar Heels have extended their lead on ODU to 21-13.

UNC has now scored on three of their first four possessions.

End of 1: UNC 14, ODU 13:  After a wild first 15 minutes, the teams will trade ends of the field with UNC moving the ball and holding a 14-13 lead.

2:39 1st: UNC 14, ODU 13: The first-quarter scoring continues as Old Dominion tacks on a 40-yard field goal and it is a one-point game in Chapel Hill.

5:05 1st: UNC 14, ODU 10: In what is shaping up to be a shoot-out, UNC needed less than a minute to regain the lead on ODU as a big play to Quinshad Davis set up a 27-yard score by TJ Thorpe.

5:43 1st: ODU 10, UNC 7: Old Dominion, winners of eight of their last nine, have taken the lead on UNC after a fumble was cashed in by Colby Goodwyn on his 12th rush TD of the year.

11:43 1st: UNC 7, ODU 3: Old Dominion went 53 yards in 10 plays to settle for a 37-yard field goal and the Monarchs are on the board in a 7-3 game in Chapel Hill.

13:53 1st: UNC 7, Old Dominion 0: After a quick 3-and-out by the Monarchs, UNC tallied on a 56-yard flea-flicker to Quinshad Davis who was all alone for the easy score.

Pregame

North Carolina is on the verge of completing a remarkable comeback.

The Tar Heels (5-5) can turn their miserable start into bowl eligibility Saturday with a nonconference victory over Old Dominion (8-3).

Coach Larry Fedora says his team didn't worry when it faced a 1-5 start that came against one of the nation's toughest early-season schedules.

"Our staff did a great job of just keeping their nose down, kept working, nobody panicked and they were able to show the kids that there's no reason to panic," Fedora said. "We're close. We just have to make this play or we have to do this or we have to do that.

"The kids kept believing," he added. "They kept working extremely hard. They had great attitudes."

The Tar Heels have reeled off four straight wins on the strength of a defense that has forced more turnovers and an offense that has continued to click despite a season-ending injury to senior quarterback Bryn Renner.

Now they're on the brink of returning to the postseason after an NCAA-mandated one-year absence.

"I saw this turnaround coming five weeks ago," Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder said.

Marquise Williams will make his third start in place of Renner, whose college career is over following surgery on his non-throwing shoulder. Williams has led the team in rushing in four of UNC's last six games, and ran for 79 yards in last week's wild win at Pittsburgh.

Now he faces an Old Dominion team that is transitioning to the FBS, has also won four straight and has faced two ACC schools (Maryland and Pitt) as well as a future Conference USA rival that already beat the Tar Heels - East Carolina.

Those three teams combined to give the Monarchs all of their losses, though they kept it relatively tight against the Panthers before falling 35-24.

"I feel like we have better knowledge of what we're doing" against FBS schools, Wilder said. "I feel like we've gained confidence overall and for the program, particularly coming out of that Pitt game.

"My concern is physically we don't match up versus this team. We don't match up in the interior line. That's a major concern and that's where the game starts."

___

Five things to know about Old Dominion's first visit to UNC:

SWITZER'S LAND: Few players are as hot as North Carolina's Ryan Switzer. The freshman has accounted for five touchdowns during the winning streak - including a pair of punt returns for scores against Pitt. His 61-yard TD return with 4:46 left broke a 27-all tie. Fedora says Switzer "really believes he's going to make guys miss" and that "when he does that, anything can happen."

HEINICKE CAUSING HEADACHES: The Tar Heels are rightfully concerned about slowing down Old Dominion QB Taylor Heinicke. Last year's Walter Payton Award winner as the top player in the FCS is leading an offense that averages 44.4 points and 378 yards passing. Fedora says Heinicke caught his eye when he watched the Monarchs on film against ECU and Pitt and "he's just a playmaker."

YOUTH MOVEMENT: North Carolina could be a handful in the coming years because the Tar Heels have 36 touchdowns this season - and 28 of them have been scored by freshmen or sophomores. WR Bug Howard and Switzer each have scored four, and the team's last 12 TDs have come from either freshmen or sophomores.

STREAKING TAR HEELS: In addition to bowl eligibility, a North Carolina victory would give the Tar Heels their first five-game winning streak since 2001. That run started with a 41-9 rout of then-No. 6 Florida State and included wins against N.C. State, Virginia, East Carolina and Clemson.

COMING TO C-USA: This is Old Dominion's last game before it officially begins Conference USA play in 2014. North Carolina is the Monarchs' fifth FBS opponent and they're 1-3 against them with a 59-38 rout of Idaho two weeks ago their first victory against a team from college football's top tier.

Estimated attendance at Kenan, 25,ooo. If UNC wins and no one sees it, will it count?

I'd think it would be hard to get excited about a cupcake game like this kicking off at noon, late in november, and at the same time as my team's basketball game (live or on TV)... I'm glad Duke doesn't have any cupcakes like this in Week 13...

  • cjw6105 Nov 22, 11:27 p.m.

Look out, Shreveport! Here come the Tar Heels!

What an accomplishment! A possible 6-6 season, built on the backs of wins over the likes of Middle Tenn, BC, the Wolfpack, UVA, Pitt and ODU!

Heck, had the Heels been able to play Florida State and Clemson, I bet they'd be at least 8-4 if not 9-3.

But why worry about winning 8 or 9 games? 6 is enough, and who knows? Maybe 5 or even 4 wins will eventually be enough to reward a team with a bowl game.

Let's go Heels! Everyone counted you out at 1-5, but UNC is on the brink of great turn around.

It hurts doesn't it? I'm sure you were laughing when UNC was 1-5 but now, dad-gummit, they are about to become bowl eligible. Don't worry, at least the pack can get their holiday shopping done easier, no distractions like practice or bowl games.

Old Dominion is not just a trucking firm, it's also a small school in Virginny about the size of Belmont Abbey, you remember them in b-ball don't you, sure. Well anyway ODU gave ECU a pretty good game, yes, they're known for throwing the ball a bit, uh, let's see, Carolina's weakness is pass coverage, that's right. Look out now, I believe your f-ball Belmont day of reckoning has arrived, cheers!

This is no cupcake game - ODU has won eight games this year, and is known for their ability to run up the score.

Yeah, Duke does it right with all their scheduling, padding it up front to get some momentum & fluff up the W-L record. I think you grilz are quite full of Troy, Navy, NCCU, and Memphis cupcakes.
