Why has the UNC board gone silent?

Why has the UNC board gone silent?

With the success and ranking of the UNC baseball team, recruiting in basketball, Spring football game, etc; I thought the forum would be over running with topics.

RE: Why has the UNC board gone silent?

Oh, it is overrunning with topics. Its just that 99% of those topics are non-UNC trolls posting drivel.

The baseball team is playing well, but I fear that there are a couple of factors as far as why you don't see much posting. 1) A lot of people on the forums may not care that much about college baseball and/or 2) We've grown accustomed to UNC being really good in the regular season in baseball and are waiting to see if this is the year they finally can break through in the post season.

Recruiting news- We've known for quite some time that we were getting James, Johnson, Tokoto, and Paige. When there wasn't a surprise 5th name added to that list, not much to talk about for UNC fans I guess. The biggest recruiting haul was probably the return of McAdoo which gives UNC at least some experience on the interior.

I didn't go to the spring football game. People who did that I have talked to liked what they saw. However, I've seen several quotes from players and staff about how "bare bones" the play calls were offensively, so I'm a bit reticent to get too excited.

RE: Why has the UNC board gone silent?

I agree with Kenny - there's always a bit of a letdown after basketball season is over. Unfortunately, there was a lot of troll inspired SPAM on the site last week, and the only way to get rid of that is to ignore it.

@Kenny - I think there's going to be a big learning curve with regards to the players adjusting to Fedora's system. I liked what I saw, but like Fedora said, they have a long way to go. The guys are eager to move on from all the drama of the past two years, and they're hungry, so I think that bodes well for the season.

true enough. baseball team just did something impressive, sweep Va. up there. given we've gone to the CWS 6 out of the last 7 yrs, but haven't pulled off that feat,(no one else has done it in a while either),since 94.

I'm not surprised by the simplicity of the plays. I think he really is focused on the number of reps, and the overall speed of their play. I also believe, he believes you should give athletes a chance to make plays one on one. Often, that is merely throwing it quickly to someone like morris, gio, blue, that new kid from west va., boyd, whomever. then allow them to get by the first man. I think Carolina has some players, that were highly rated recruits, that can do just that. The defense will be more unpredictable, with blitzes coming from different personnel and from different angles. we'll know more after the elon and wake game.I expect a lot of procedural penalties etc. related to the linemen and team being on the same page every play. should be fun to watch anyway.

RE: Why has the UNC board gone silent?

Hmmm...even though I'm new I've been pretty active about the Spring Game and Basketball with respects to Gottfreid. As everyone else eluded to, not much to talk about on the Basketball front, the kids Roy has coming played well in the Nike Classic as expected. Been listening intently to baseball on the radio and impressed with how the team has done, bouncing back from the Miami games and sweeping UVA. I would say most UNC fans are not in the habit of starting useless threads to stink up the place. Also, I beleive some have gone to Mr. Tizu's blog that seems more sports oriented as this one seems to be more of a forum for some in the NCSU fanbase to hate and dominate with as Mr. Kenny said, useless "drivel". Most of my friends who visit here come away with the feeling this is a WRAL blog in name only controlled by NCSU miscreants (this does not include you JMWBRD).

RE: Why has the UNC board gone silent?

I think missing out on Oriakhi hurt this fanbase badly. Let's not sugar coat it, UNC fans only care about basketball. When their football team is on probation, they have no problem admitting that.

Now they are thinking about next year. Their freshman PG recruit has a broken foot and will be out until June at the earliest (they would be smart to wait even later, but this is the same fanbase that expected Marshall to play with a broken wrist, so you can assume they will want him rushed him back). This means he'll be behind the 8ball as far as conditioning, team drills, offensive repetition, strength training, etc.

They have a hole the size of Texas at center. They know that Mason Plumlee is back at Duke, Howell is solid at State, Reggie Johnson and Alex Lin are a couple of other names that UNC will have to contend with in the paint in 2012-13.

Traditionally, PG and Center have been the most important positions at UNC. Think Lawson/Hansbrough or Felton/May. Next year will be a rebuilding year, for sure. UNC will lack true depth, especially at PG. Dexter and McDonald both come back from torn ACL's, but they may never have the same burst and athleticism that they once had.

And the icing on the cake-- 2010 was the last time Roy had a rebuilding year. UNC lost to Dayton in the NIT after a humiliating 82-50 loss to Duke in the regular season finale. I think UNC fans are remembering that year, looking at the holes in their roster, and thinking........ OH SH*T!

And you are wrong.

RE: Why has the UNC board gone silent?

The center position is definitely the key area of concern for Heel basketball next season. Even if James ends up being solid, their depth at the power forward and center spots will be questionable. That said, other than at center, UNC will be better than dook at the other 4 starting slots. UNC's bigger concern will be matching up with NCSU...with or without Calvin.

Sub, as usual you attempt to troll.

Oriakhi coming would have been nice, but became less important when McAdoo returned. Ultimately, from what I've heard, UNC actually backed off of Oriakhi due to some comments he made concerning Calhoun and the UConn program.

Next year's point guard has a stress fracture in his foot. I had one when I was in college and I was told basically not to run for 6 weeks. His may be a bit worse, but even if he is "out until June" that's no big deal since actual practice doesn't start until well after that point.

Plumlee? Don't make me laugh. No one fears that stiff. McAdoo will run the floor and be just fine thanks for your concern though.

As for comparing next season to 2010, you're way off base. In 2010, UNC had lost both Ty Lawson AND Bobby Frasor. Larry Drew II ended up being the incumbent at the point and we all know how his career at UNC worked out. Bust. Next season, Paige will come in, but doesn't have to start if he's not ready for those kind of minutes. You forget that UNC has Dexter Strickland back and his play as the back-up point has steadily improved to the point where he is at least capable if not spectacular. This team also will not have the dearth of leadership that the 2010 team did IMO with Strickland a senior, McDonald a junior and Bullock a junior either all starting or at least getting prime minutes. No one will be picking UNC to win the national championship, but anyone who thinks they'll repeat 2010 is insane. They may end up being closer to 2006.

RE: Why has the UNC board gone silent?

No one knows how McDonald and Strickland are going to play next year. Torn ACL's are pretty much the worse injury a guard can suffer. They rely on their knees for acceleration, speed, burst, jumping, etc. Especially Strickland-- he tore his ACL in december, those injuries typically take at least 1 year to fully recover from.

I doubt Strick will even be ready for the beginning of the season. McDonald should, though. Big difference in tearing an ACL in june compared to december.

Paige will have to start, and being off his feet for 6 weeks is going to hurt his progress. Joel James will have to start, with only Brice Johnson and Hubert as the backup post players.

RE: Why has the UNC board gone silent?

Sub, McDonald could've come back this season, but they decided to keep the redshirt on him rather than bring him back. This was discussed after Dexter's injury. Yes, ACL's are bad, but this also isn't 1982 where an ACL was just about a guaranteed career ender. Strickland will be playing next year.
