VA Tech athletics press conference scheduled today at 4pm

RE: VA Tech athletics press conference scheduled today at 4pm

I can't see it. He didn't even visit Illinois about their opening and that's a much higher profile job than VA Tech.

I don't see Shaka Smart taking the VT job either. Matt Doherty is available....

You hate VT that badly?

No! I like VT. I was joking about Doh.

Shrug, not all of the problems at UNC during his time were the fault of Matt. Matt has become the convenient scapegoat for the Guthridge staff's terrible recruiting and the justification of Dicky Baddour's capitulation to a group of players and their parents that threatened to transfer. Matt had some talent his first year and the team played well, but peaked in its win over Duke middle of the season. The 8-20 team was talent deficient thanks to the previous staff (Adam Boone, Brian Morrison, best players Jason Capel and Kris Lang...). People look at Matt's last season and see NIT, but forget that they lost Sean May in December and spent the rest of the season playing Byron Sanders in the middle as a freshman. Prior to May's injury, UNC had played very well including an upset of Kansas in the Preseason NIT. Given talent, Doherty can be a good coach. The problem is, I'm not sure that Doherty's ability to recruit wasn't irreparably damaged by the way UNC handled his ouster. His subsequent stops alone have been difficult places for recruiting.

I was joking about Doh. I'm the first one to admit that not all of Carolina's woes were Matt's fault; however, for all his good intentions (and I do believe he had the best of intentions) he wasn't ready to coach at such a high profile program. Some of the players (McCants for sure) had a bad attitude, and Doherty didn't know how to handle them. IMHO, Carolina goofed by hiring Matt in the first place and goofed worse in the way they handled his firing.
