UNC Fans and the USA Basketball Team

Jeff Foster

The poll is bogus. NBA players are gonna say the best defenders are dirty because great defenders make their jobs harder. That's all this is.

LOL.
Here are some of the "great" defenders that appear on the list: Reggie Evans, Jeff Foster, Gerald Henderson, Kevin Love, Anderson Varejao, Eduardo Najera, Ryan Hollins, Jamaal Magloire.
Hall of Fame material...not (bogus assertion from the dookie homer).

Defense: A terrific defender who really gives a great effort to shut his man down. Does a good job deny post entry passes and jumping into position when the ball is entered. Can step out and guard most centers that float out to the midrange. Shows nice lateral quickness for his position. Will slide over and help out when his teammates get beat off the dribble, but isn't a threat to reject many shots. Goes straight up rather than attempting to challenge players at the rim. Tremendous rebounder. Boxes out on every possession. Gets minutes because he is a defensive workhorse.

Gerald Henderson, Charlotte Bobcats

Henderson is in his second season, but spent most of his rookie year toiling away on the Charlotte bench. A middling Bobcats team struggling to secure a low playoff seed didn't have room for a rookie guard in the regular rotation, especially with veteran options readily available. That kind of decision-making is par for the course with Larry Brown teams; Brown has found success with almost every team he's coached, but nearly all of his coaching stops have also been marked by a disregard for young, developing talent. Such was the case with Henderson, and the guard's inability to secure regular playing time extended into Brown's tenure this season.

However, two developments have allowed Henderson to shine. The first was Brown's exit because the Bobcats' current head coach, Paul Silas, is much more willing to invest in the future of his roster. The other was the trading of Gerald Wallace. Though Wallace's departure wouldn't seem to be a boon for any of the Bobcats, it did open up opportunities for Henderson to try his hand as a defensive stopper. That was all Henderson needed, and while his emergence has been more a matter of role alteration and playing time adjustment than improvement, he still warrants a place among the finest defensive up-and-comers.

Henderson is a fantastic on-ball defender. He's aggressive without getting himself in foul trouble, and uses his natural athleticism well. Henderson has been a thorn in the side of some of the top wing players, and he's well on his way to becoming an elite lock-down defender.

RE: UNC Fans and the USA Basketball Team

give cojo a break.

after all, he still thinks the draft lottery is the first 21 picks.

RE: UNC Fans and the USA Basketball Team

Yawn.
Will take much more than that to justify the use of the term "great".
And to discredit a poll of active NBA players.

RE: UNC Fans and the USA Basketball Team

Apparently, dookie homer reasoning is that it is ok to be a dirty player if you are considered an excellent defender. As such, Rasheed gets a full pass:

"Wallace was an elite one-on-one post defender who could match up against Tim Duncan or Kevin Garnett or Tracy McGrady without needing a double-team."

"At the center of it all (for Detroit) was Wallace, a dynamic low-post defender..."

"...valued around the league as a top post defender."

"He was an elite defender. His defensive rating in his best years are right where a prime KG's defense is ranked."

Battier's one of the dirtiest players ever and Rasheed Wallace was an angel. Who's the homer?

Rasheed was a dirty player and Hendergoon is a angel. Who's the homer?

It's still you because you don't think Rasheed Wallace was dirty.

RE: UNC Fans and the USA Basketball Team

Never said Wallace was not dirty.
Did provide the data from a poll of current NBA players that voted Hendergoon and Battier as dirty is valid.
By deflecting such supporting evidence with a lame claim that these players "say the best defenders are dirty because great defenders make their jobs harder", you have clearly identified yourself as a dookie homer.
