VT Names Their Head B Ball Coach

VT Names Their Head B Ball Coach

In a move I don't think anyone saw (I know I didn't), according to David Glenn, VT has named James Johnson as their Head Coach. This is the same guy who left VT last week to take an assistant coaching job at Clemson. Talk about strange. Well, State fans can breathe easy because it looks like Lutz is staying in Raleigh.

RE: VT Names Their Head B Ball Coach

Totally strange. I have no idea what Weaver is doing up there. Lutz is still getting monies from Charlotte according to one writer on here yesterday. He would have lost some of this money had he taken another job. I have no clue as to how much Weaver even talked about with Lutz.

VT basketball took several steps backward with all of this mess/timing. I did read some of what the VT fans stated about Johnson. Most seemed to think he is OK. I don't even know how much they know, or how old these people are either. I would have thought that we could have signed a coach with head coaching experience. Or a top-notch assistant with HC experience. There are loads all around. Money offered? Weaver?

Hokie, I was thinking the same thing. I thought Weaver would have had someone in mind when he let Greenberg go last week, and that "someone" seemed to be Lutz. But to hire the same guy who left VT to accept another coaching position last week at Clemson is strange. AD's have taken chances on coaches with no HC experience before, and sometimes it's worked out well - Dean Smith and Roy Williams sure did, so hopefully this will work out for VT. I hope he can assemble a good supporting group of coaches around him.

RE: VT Names Their Head B Ball Coach

They owe Greenberg the last 4 years of his contract. They probably couldn't afford a new decent head coach with prior head coaching experience.

Hokie posted how much VT paid to buy out Greenberg, and it wasn't that much at all. This entire situation is very perplexing. I get why VT fired Greenberg, although not the timing, but why hire back a former assistant that just left for another ACC school?

To keep continuity with the current players and recruits. (Not saying that's a VALID reason for hiring a former assistant, but it might be THE reason they did it.)

Plus, on such late notice, it might have been difficult to bring in the dream hire.

It's a head scratcher for sure, TBK. It's just s strange all around - Johnson leaves for another school, gives a scathing exit interview regarding Seth, then comes back as his replacement. I understand that VT wanted to fire Seth, but the way this was handled was poor; Greenberg deserved better IMHO. I hope everything works out for VT.

As a side note, I wonder how Brad Brownell feels about all this.

RE: VT Names Their Head B Ball Coach

Yeah, the whole thing is a little surreal. And it was a pretty quick hire, too. One would think the hiring of the previous assistant would be the "safety net" for them. But the hire was done so quickly, it's almost as if he was one of their first choices. Makes you wonder if they had this planned all along once they decided to fire Seth.

I'm sure Brownell is not too happy about this -- now they need to hire another assistant coach.

Could be a little chilly when VT visits Clemson, that's for sure.

Seems as if they could have worked out a face saving deal where Seth "retired" and turned over the reins to his assistant. The money could have been worked out on the side. This way, it just looks as if maybe Weaver doesn't know what he's doing.

Good analysis. Weaver has not won too many points in this fiasco. He had to do a quick turn-around after some huge boosters filled his ear with the way it was handled. They were a day late and a dollar short. It shouldn't have come to this. It's an embarrassing thing for VT. And, this is one that I haven't seen in any other school in recent memory.

I think that you, TBK, and Ken D hit on valid points all around. I would only surmise that Weaver has taken some big heat from some powerful people in this fiasco.

To call an impromptu media press release like he did in just over a few hours after telling Seth that he was fired wasn't all that well thought out. It could have been handled much better as we all can see. I'll be glad when the dust can settle a little bit. I realize that the triad is mainly concerned with State, Duke, and UNC. That's the way it is supposed to be. We have a pretty large contigent of Hokie fans in the State and I think most are scratching their heads with this situation.
