Don't think Public Ivy is very debatable. Any list that is made will doubtlessly include UNC, as it is a top 5 and world-renowned piblic university.

I see you are still hung up on a rogue AA Studies Chair from 3 years ago. I'm sorry...the rest of us are going on and keeping up with the real world.

Are you just upset that NC State never has been and never will be considered to be a public ivy, like its older brother to the west?

I'm just laughing that you no longer think of UNC as 'The Harvard of the South.' Thirty minutes ago, you did.

And despite your claims of Public Ivy, the facts are NC State grads earn more than UNC grads. Check it out at payscale.com.

Payscale.com omits NC State and UNC graduates that went on to graduate school, is completely anonymous, and is self-reported. Not many people take that website seriously. So, your claim that NC State grads earn more is unverified. Personally, I'd doubt it, especially considering the amount of lawyers/doctors and people from KF that UNC puts out each year, but you never know.

No, we just don't think any institution undeservedly should lay claim to being "public ivy". If you can take an advanced foreign language course before taking remedial English (Marvin Austin) or take an advanced foreign language course where no foreign language is used (Michael McAdoo) at a school, it isn't "public ivy".

That's student cheating in legitimate classes. I asked for links to other instances of phantom grades in phantom classes with phantom professors.

No clue what Coples did, but he's probably making more money than most people his age.

Wow. This is very disappointing. All these academic issues were supposed to be researched, exposed, delt with and in the rear view mirror. This is a very serious issue.

I'll wait until all the facts are in before forming an opinion, but I have to say that this does not look good.

jgunn, what facts are you waiting on? This is the report of an in-house investigation by UNC professors. If you're expecting a Poole Commission-style independent investigation ordered by the Board of Governors, don't hold your breath.

I read the piece in the N&O, but I want to see more. Right now, it seems to be isolated to African Studies. I'm not diminishing this in any way. I thought all the academic issues were out in the open. In the past, I jumped to conclusions; I don't want to do that this time. This is a very serious matter.

The fact that the Dept Chair is "retiring" is disgusting. I don't agree with that at all. He should be fired without any benefits at all.

SInce this happened in the past, before the NCAA handed down it's punishment, I wouldn't think it would be a matter of a probation violation, but it may bring additional sanctions. Just my thoughts, I really don't know what will happen.

I think the investigation will have zero impact on the NCAA issued sanctions. The report only confirms what the NCAA listed as academic irregularities. The number of courses and the number of athletes involved does not change the findings of the NCAA.

Just my opinion as a NC State fan.
