Report finds academic fraud at UNC

RE: Report finds academic fraud at UNC

Since 2006, NC State has had a total of 15 "committee cases". Those are student athletes that fall below NCAA, ACC, &/or UNC system requirements for admission. That's 5 a year. UNC has averaged EIGHTEEN a year over that same period. The 2006 class had 27 alone. That's unreal. And these guys are graduating in 4 years from a supposed 'public ivy' school. (rolls eyes) And most of these losers (Dwight Jones, Kevin Reddick, etc) had to have special circumstances to even graduate high school.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/11/28/1870685/unc-athletes-caught-in-squeeze.html

"At UNC, about half of the football recruiting classes over the past six years have been admitted to school through a special committee process required for students who fall below academic requirements."

"At N.C. State - which often recruits the same in-state athletes as UNC - 15 football players have gone before a special admissions committee since 2006 because they did not meet minimum curriculum requirements set by the UNC-system Board of Governors."

UNC Exceptions

Number of student athletes granted admission who did not meet minimum requirements:

-2010: 14
-2009: 16
-2008: 13
-2007: 22
-2006: 27

18 academic exceptions PER YEAR for Carolina. Yet, NONE of them had any problem graduating from Carolina. Not one. And now this report about the academic fraud. It doesn't take a genius to figure out SOME of these academic exceptions benefited from the academic fraud.

Independent investigation now!

Not trying to be dense here, but did the players really graduate? Some of the players left after their junior year for the NFL, and I doubt they cared if they graduated.

As for the independent investigation, I'm in favor of it.

RE: Report finds academic fraud at UNC

I've said this before, and I'll say it again now...schools should be allowed to have special majors for athletes. A kid playing college football or basketball typically wants to make a career out of it, so why can't colleges offer "football studies" or "professional athletics" as majors? They could teach their student-athletes about the league, agent representation, financial planning, backup plans (maybe courses related to coaching), etc. Heck, if you really want to get into it, make "NCAA Compliance 101" be a mandatory part of the major.

Kids who play the violin can major in music...kids who act can major in drama. Why can't kids who play football major in football?

I totally agree. Some elite athletes go to school because they HAVE to according to NBA and NFL rules. So, why not offer them classes in something that will actually help them in the real world they're going to live in? They're currently taking up room in classes they don't want to be in. It would be a win-win for the schools and the student athletes.

RE: Report finds academic fraud at UNC

Imagine how much better Roy would have looked if he had come forward when Butch got busted and admitted his players had taken those courses and suggested self-imposed penalties for the round ball program. Instead he listened to the boosters who assured him that they had it covered. I guess this helps to explain why he's become such a Bobby Knight-style maniac over the past few years. Guilt and stress will do that. We all knew that it seemed very odd that such a systematic program for parking and grades would only by used by the football team but sometimes it takes a smoking gun. As soon as we get to the next step and those course rolls are reported, everyone will have their smoking gun.

So Roy should have punished a team that didn't do anything wrong?

Nice work.
- Posted by chapelthrill2007

Like I said... some people just have to have the smoking gun. Well, the smoking guns have been coming out of the woodwork, so once again... be patient just a little longer.

Once again, don't hold your breath.

Exactly! I'll believe there is fraud in the basketball program when I see it proven. Not before! Some people are just dying for fraud to be discovered in the basketball program.

RE: Report finds academic fraud at UNC

Very commendable of you Godfather. My wife works in public education & trust me, I know all about the problems out there. Absent parents, phone numbers that don't work when a teacher tries to make contact, drug issues among students & parents, parents that can't hold a job or in many cases WON'T hold a job.

But the fact that UNC has admitted all the academic exceptions but has yet to have an actual academic casualty in 30+ years is rather ridiculous. The corruption & cover up in Chapel Hill is the problem. Not the students. Grade inflation, fake courses & shoddy professors lead to suspect degrees.

Don't worry, help is on the way. With all the AA graduates that UNC is producing, there will be a long line of 'community organizers' to take up your mantle.

If your wife works in public education why are you condemning programs that do work to get 100% of them through. You and I both know it can be done if you have enough resources. Show me a kid that wants it, and you can overcome all the past issues IF you put the resources to it. The reason these kids get a greater proportion of resources is because they can make money for the university playing footballl, flat out. If one of them drops out it really can hurt the money making capacity of the athletics program, no so with a run of the mill Godfather or Skunk. My suggestion is to demand WHY NCSU does not do more to graduate it's players. I'd say lack of funding as highlighted by Debbie Yow is critical as if you don't have money, you can't hire accademic resources. I'm very proud UNC takes such an interest in graduating it's players, maybe NCSU should follow our lead if you can get yourself, Mr. Truth, and Mr. V4 to help Mr. Murphy out.

The reason NCSU doesn't graduate all of its players is because our player actually HAVE to go to REAL classes with REAL syllabuses with REAL professors. They have availability to tutors yet are accountable for their own success. Some don't cut it. White, black, red or yellow. It's just amazing that UNC hasn't had an academic casualty in Football or basketball in 30+ years. Not one. Give me a break.

NCSU doesn't have tutors on the payroll of the head coach doing the players school work for them. Your players take fake classes with non-existent professors or with professors so ignorant that they don't recognize (or WON'T recognize) the most important document on Swahili that has ever been written. Your boys made Baddour, Thorp & Bob Orr look like complete idgits in a court of law. And I didn't think Prince Tassle Loafers, Sr & Prince Tassle Loafers, Jr could look like biggers idgits. But McAdidn't & Nyang'oro pulled it off.

And my wife has a very good friend that taught at Dwight Jones' high school in Alamance County. She said there is no way in **** that he ever should have graduated high school much less got admitted into UNC. And she's a UNC fan. If not for some magical correspondence course conjured up by Butch & his minions, he would have never graduated HS. Clemson wouldn't even touch him. They said "Thanks, but no thanks."

And I don't want NC State to pass along every player just to make the APR numbers look good. I don't want to tarnish the value of my diploma in the name of graduating illiterates in 4 years. I want to be proud of our player graduates like Russell Wilson, Philip Rivers, & Adrian Wilson when I hear them speak on TV. I would much rather be represented by the likes of them vs. Quinton Coples, Donte Paige-Moss (of 10 people rob a bank fame), Dwight Jones, & Marvin Austin.

Wonderful, wonderful idea folks. However, they do NOT currently offer such programs and the attempt at UNC-Chapel Hill to serve the purpose of such a program constitutes a very serious and damaging case of academic misconduct and fraud. Did this department operate without the knowledge of very senior athletic department employees such as Butch Davis and Roy Williams? Of course not, they were the primary beneficiaries. Have previous and current chancellors and Board of Governors members known about this 'curriculum' program? Seems very unlikely it could have operated successfully without help at the highest levels.

I wonder if any UNC-Chapel Hill players ever sold any sneakers for grocery money? It would be nice if that were the worst of their worries, wouldn't it?

If you really think that is all NC State was guilty of in the 80s, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

And if you think there were NO UNC basketball players were involved, I've got some beach front property in Kansas to sell you. And if you think this ONLY happened in the summer of 2007 & 2009, I've got a tropical island in Greenland for you, too.

Yeah, thats why NCSU has such a disproportionately high number of Minority Athletes that don't graduate vs. non-minority, because they can't cut it? So then why in the world is TOBy recruiting all of these lazy kids that don't want to work and get a degree? You may be the biggest hypocrite in the blogosphere. So tell me why can NCSU football graduate 89% of it's non-minority players, but only 45% of it's minority players? Oh, that's right, they can't "cut it". So it was ok to make money off their backs while they were playing and making the Pack money, but then once they finish playing NCSU kicks them to the curb if they are minority? Why in the world is TOB recruiting so many minority players who don't graduate? Is it that NCSU is not giving them every opportunity to succeed? And guess what, you got plenty of parks and rec. majors on the team but I don't think there are many studying Nuclear Engineering, so save the holier than thou drivel about your classes. I know of plenty of "EASY" NCSU classes from friends who went there.

BTW, I've given an excellent answer to this before, defending TOB and the Pack, but figured I'd break something off since you went all "syllabusmaniac" on me. Go clean up that massive cow pie over at the quad Sparky before you start talking about someone elses compost smell there Skunkypoo.

Oh, here is our link. Riddle me this there Skunkypoo, why can VT and Miami graduate so many of it's football players? Top rated Schools like NCSU, how do they do it and NCSU struggles. How about Penn State, another great Engineering School? I'll hang up and wait while you dangle between air and water getting ready for your journey to visit the fishes.

Don't forget the link...(and the Godfather makes him an offer he can't refuse)

One more thing, that "Bowling" class should come in handy in your future career pursuits.

Difference being: Documented proof of NC State players taking money in the 1980s.

No proof at all of the UNC basketball team being involved in anything today.

Facts vs conjecture.
