The Friedlander Cup

The Friedlander Cup

Apparently NC State and Florida State are the last two schools in the running for the Friedlander Cup, a mythical trophy given out by a blogger who gives thousands of dollars to NC State each year. The cup is not awarded because of any athletic merit. Rather, it is just awarded.

Congrats, finalists!

RE: The Friedlander Cup

ahhh...poor Thrill. Someone else has pointed out how the Directors Cup standings are flawed.

Who cares? No one

People care about these things: Football, Basketball.......distant third baseball. That's it. I like Lax....most don't. Some like soccer.....most don't

RE: The Friedlander Cup

But while the numbers are right there in black and white with UNC finishing fourth nationally behind only perennial Director's Cup champion Stanford, Florida and Ohio State, does anyone - even those in Chapel Hill - honestly believe that the Tar Heels' were the league's best over the past 12 months?

We are, after all, talking about a school whose football team lost five of its last seven games before being put on probation by the NCAA; whose men's basketball team not only fell short of the national championship that was predicted of it, but didn't even make it to the Final Four; and whose women's basketball team got shut out of the NCAA tournament field completely.

Florida State won five ACC titles in 2011-12, including its first ever in men's basketball

Yes, UNC did win a national championship in men's soccer and fielded strong squads in many other nonrevenue sports. It also benefited greatly from a flawed scoring system that rewards volume almost as much as it does actual performance.

It's a lot easier to accumulate points when you've got 27 teams representing your school in varsity competition, as UNC does, compared to only 19 offered at Virginia Tech and Clemson, 18 at Florida State, 16 each at Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, and 15 at Miami.

In Chapel Hill, they like their sports teams that take the field in painted fingernails. That's all the girl's teams and football.

Oh, I definitely agree that people care about more than the Director's Cup. I just found Friedlander's patronizing column about NC State hilarious, given that he gives NC State thousands of dollars a year and yet tries to remain impartial.

There is one flaw in this article. The Directors Cup point total does not include every team in every sport. It is comprised of the top 20 teams per school, 10 mens and 10 womens.

"In Division I, there will be 20 sports counted in the standings - the top 10 men's and the top 10 women's"

The Directors Cup is a joke......you know and I know it.

But even still, FSU doesn't have 20 teams.

You think top-to-bottom athletic excellence is a joke? I don't, but you are free to have your own opinion.

Although I enjoy UNC finishing high in Director's Cup standings I sort of agree with you. When the number of programs is not factored it's kinda like Roger Federer having to play tennis against a low ranked doubles team. Federer can whip anybody in the world but would lose every time against the doubles team. And the Director's Cup goes to the doubles team.

RE: The Friedlander Cup

yes, I think caring about the fact that Duke is good at women's tennis and golf is a joke.

I also think that UNC fans who act like women's soccer, men's tennis, field hockey, and all other non-revenue sports mean something are jokes as well.

Recap:
Baskeball---We all care
Football--- We all care
Baseball---- a big portion cares
Everything else------ No one cares but the parents of the athletes and people who have played the sport themselves.

Well, different priorities I guess. Even using your logic, though, Friedlander's article is off-base.
