RE: Do you believe Roy?
It's disgraceful in regard to the AA Studies Dept. It is a great harm to the leadership, and Thorp in particular. UNC didn't act and make crucial decisions in a timely manner.
Where is the accountability? Thorp is too close to his friend Nyang'oro it seems. He should have fired down on him when he was the Head of this Department. Now. Thorp is going to take a lot of heat. He didn't act on this ordeal the way most could/should have acted. I'll save myself vs any other.

Hokie, this latest information may be Thorp's downfall. I don't see how he survives this. The academic fraud originally discovered was bad enough, but the fact that additional fraud went on when the NCAA was already investigating Carolina is very damaging. Where are the checks and balances? Where is the "institutional control"? It's a shame because I believe Thorp is a good man. He became Chancellor and trusted Baddour as well as Department Heads. That trust hasn't served him well at all.

See my previous post. Thorp and Ross are dealing with this proactively, but very carefully. Has to be done exactly by the book, painstakingly so. Also the BoG just elected officers for next year, a non-trivial piece of all this.
There are all sorts of groups involved, each with its own agenda. That includes powerful Board members and former ones, members of the media, elected officials of all sorts, etc. in addition to those obviously involved.
Factions within the Boards also come into play in various ways, often bad ways.

Having all sorts of groups involved in the investigation should unearth any and all transgressions, but if what you said about each group having it's own agenda is true, will justice be served? Will Thorp be the sacrificial lamb? Do you think Thorp survives?
RE: Do you believe Roy?
actually, the SBI is involved this time around, and their ability to "get people to talk", far exceeds that of the BOG.
it could get interesting.
also, it's fairly easy to speculate, that pastel pansy types had ALREADY CONVICTED Valvano and his teams LONG BEFORE the final verdict was handed down.
way easy.

Those extra powers the DA and the SBI have is why Thorp referred this mess to them. They also have the access to information that otherwise are protected by privacy protections regarding employees and students -- really strong restrictions on release of information except under a court order.
Those of you who have complained about this investigation vs those at State need to understand the laws are very different now. Some things are harder to do, even harder to discuss publicly even while other pieces are subject to FOI requests. This is actually being investigated more extensively than most of you understand.

Thorp
did not refer this issue to the SBI. It was the Orange Co. DA. Thorp gets no credit for any real investigation.

Wrong again. Here is the coverage at Chapelboro.com / WCHL
http://www.chapelboro.com/pages/13122865.php? and similar coverage appeared on WTVD. The DA and UNC requested the SBI, at Thorp's request after he had consulted with Ross.
You might also look at Ross's interview that appeared on Saturday.
I will post a related thread tomorrow for those of you needing remedial instruction.
You should consider expanding you news sources beyond Raleigh.

Sorry for your reading comprehension or lack thereof, Thorp is not the Orange Co DA This request on Monday came after the Orange Co DA had already made the initial request. You infer that the original request was from Thorp, which is not true. This is like a second person callong 911 after the EMS is alaready on the scene.
Nice deflection on your part for those who live in the confines of UNC Fantasy World.
What Roy should have said...
What is he suppose to say? We have players that cheated, and I knew about it! Come on not good Ole Roy!!

What Roy should have said...
It now is evident some of the basketball team was involved in the suspect classes and I fully support the investigation into whether or not these classes met the rigors expected of a degree program. I wil have no further comment until this question has been answered.
RE: Do you believe Roy?
Two of the fraudulent classes had ONLY one student & that students was a BASKETBALL player. Now why would Nyan'goro set up classes for only ONE basketball player? I wonder who was behind that???

119, many of the independent classes at both UNC and NC State have one to five students assigned. I don't suspect that class size as much as I do if any work was actually graded before the passing A or B was given.

Class size is not the issue. The issue is these fraudulent classes had 100% baskeball players and Thorp can not determine why or by whom these classes were formed. He was head of the department & then chancellor of the university during these instances of academic fraud. How does that wad even have a job?
The only explanation is that these problems PREDATE him & go much DEEPER than him. Maybe that is the reason that Donald Washington was their last academic casualty in football or basketball.
AND THAT WAS IN 1973. Almost 40 YEARS AGO.

I agree with you in what you have written. He may survive it. It's according to how well the powers like him. It's just a tough situation for the school.

and yet somehow you missed the word
again within the statement. They had already been contacted by the DA.
Facts are fun!
