Actually, he was right...UNC is The Flagship of the UNC System, by definition. That "flagship" has done sailed LOL

By all definitiions, UNC is the Flagship since it was the first school in developing the University system. However, it does not make it superior to any other campus location simply because it has the Flagship title. In fact, now that it is first in NCAA/SBI/University corruption investigations, it gives a whole new meaning to Flagship. I wouldn't be so proud right now if I were you. NC State suffered from an investigation that wasn't nearly as damnaging or as conclusive as the one at UNC.

I won't go so far as to say that UNC's athletic success has been built on fraudulent classes, but I know others will make that assertion.

Carolina is the oldest school in the UNC system. It is also, by far, the highest-ranked school in the UNC system, and has the most successful athletics program in the system. I'd say those three things make Carolina the "flagship."

I would say that the ability to investigate improprities are much easier with todays media. Computers for grades and attendance instead of putting them in grade books and attendance books as in Valvano's days. Also the internet for people to quickly receive and post information makes the comparison impossible. We do know that a system was set up at NC State to conspire to get better players into State with mo reguard for their school work. Bruce Poulton making Jim Valvano the A.D. and also basketball coach set this system and the lack of technology of the day allowed it to go undected. Whether the two can be compared, I don't know. One seems to be a conspiracy, and the other seems to be lack of monitoring with no organized conspiracy.

it surely doesn't mean- LEADER or PACE SETTER (no school that has the NCAA on its campus rummaging through records for months on end, is a role model institution... sorry to be the bearer of such rough news).
