Veteran are two sides of the court and Marshall’s play on the defensive end has been shockingly bad. The Lakers struggles lately have been mainly on the defensive side of the ball.

What we can see with our own eyes in watching Marshall play as he has taken a large role with the team is that he lacks any semblance of lateral quickness. This is most prevalent when he is in an open space, such as defending a fast break, and the offensive player blows by right by him. In these situations you don’t expect the defender to stop the offensive player since they are in a huge disadvantage, but this is where you can see just how slow Marshall moves. It is Marshall’s shortcomings in his defensive abilities that are hurting the Lakers on the defensive side of the ball.

If we focus only on the time that Marshall is on the floor, the numbers will match closely what we see in the Lakers as a team in the second half of their season above. Marshall’s defensive rating is 109.8, which means that the team gives up 109.8 per 100 possessions when Marshall is on the floor. That rating is inline with the teams overall defensive rating in the 2nd half and significantly higher than how they performed prior to Marshall leading the point.

Furthermore, that defensive rating would rank Marshall close to the bottom in the league for guards. For comparative purposes, Jason Terry ranks lowest amoungst guards at 112.9 and CJ Wason of Indiana ranks first at 91.2.

Will take Marshall over Steve Blake, and old man always hurt overrated Steve Nash. Just hope Buss, and Kupchack have sense enough to sign him for next year. Cant wait to see him play with Kobe. When Marshall gets a consistent jump shot the sky is the limit. Go Lakers! Heck Ryan Kelly had 20 last night.!

Marshall handed out a team-high 14 assists and scored 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field, including 4 of 5 from downtown, and 1 of 1 from the free throw line. Three of his four treys came in the second half, including two in the third quarter. He did all of his damage in 44 minutes of game action, also adding four rebounds and one steal.

Marshall has double-digit assists in all but two of eight January games. He has averaged 12.0 points, 12.2 assists and 3.4 rebounds over his last five games played.

Veteran The Lakers only healthy point guard was ex-Sun Kendall Marshall, signed last week and who committed four turnovers in six minutes in his debut Saturday. He didn't play until the game was decided in the fourth quarter.

The 6-foot-6 Xavier Henry again started at point guard with Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring) and Steve Nash (back) all sidelined.

The Celtics are reportedly interested in free agent Kendall Marshall, according to the Boston Globe.

The Celtics can't really afford him with their current roster, so it's a bit of a moot point. They're dying for a player that can run the point considering Avery Bradley's horrendous assist:turnover ratio of 3.0:4.7 this season. Marshall can dribble and pass, but his lack of shooting and defense make him an overall liability on most NBA teams.

Marshall shot 37 percent from the field as a rookie and only got to the foul line 14 times in 702 minutes played, but he did average a decent-enough 7.3 assists per 36 minutes on a bad team.

If Marshall is truly out of the rotation come Phoenix's regular season opener against the Portland Trail Blazers, it says a few things.

Firstly, it hints that the 2012 draft class, as it was then, is weak at the point guard spot after Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard. Marshall was the next point guard drafted, and after that it was down to Tony Wroten (25th overall), Marquis Teague (29th) and Tyshawn Taylor (41st). Wroten didn't last two seasons in Memphis, while Teague and Taylor are fighting for minutes -- and might get them -- on elite playoff teams.

Additionally, Marshall's spot on the bench is evidence that the new Suns regime is truly going by production to start the year. Marshall could play the "I'm not his guy" card, but even then, the 22-year-old hasn't done anything to force Hornacek to play him.

  • 903 Oct 17th and 1 win Oct 25, 2013
All Star Phoenix Suns' 13th overall pick from a year ago is at risk of dropping out of the rotation on a team expected to be at or close to the bottom of the Western Conference.

Giving up on a lottery pick two years into his career isn't easy or common. Giving up by pushing him out of the regular rotation is even more telling when a team is expected to finish dead-last, or something close to it, in its conference.

That's the reality for the Phoenix Suns and second-year point guard Kendall Marshall, who former general manager Lance Blanks took 13th overall last season. As Bright Side of the Sun's Dave King writes, Marshall was a healthy scratch in the Suns' last two preseason games -- Ish Smith even got some burn as a backup point guard -- and it's becoming clear Marshall might not be in first-year coach Jeff Hornacek's plans.

Kendall Marshall is certainly wondering what the hell happened to his NBA career, and is most likely wondering how much the Suns had to do with it - that they haven't given him the chance to shine by playing him so few minutes.

He certainly believes he's an NBA player, and now wonders when he will get that chance. Maybe he wants the Suns to decline the third year contract so he can start fresh. Definitely, he hopes for a trade to a better situation if he's not going to get playing time in Phoenix.

    Bench Marshall

Is Kendall Marshall on the outs in Phoenix?
Even though Marshall is stuck behind Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe, it's conceivable for a team to find time for a prospect who left North Carolina after his sophomore season. Unless, that is, said team already knows what it's getting. It's true that Marshall's biggest flaws -- his wonky jump shot and inability to break down defenders off the dribble -- could outweigh his best gift, which is his passing ability.

Kendall showed a command of running the floor for UNC his last year. He wasn't enough of a shooter to cause defenders to pay close attention to him. He did make a few pay down the stretch until he hurt his wrist. He should have stayed at UNC to mature and develop. The NBA doesn't care about this. They want a player to perform every night. He wasn't ready for the big time.
