Actually, his sister died in Dec 2009, right before his 2009-10 team won the National Title as a freshman. Last year was his junior year and his minutes and production were never even discussed since he wasn't much of a factor in his sophomore year either. When it was announced over the summer that he was stepping away from the team because of his sister, it was a surprise to everyone since the death of his sister happened in his freshman year and he was about to enter his senior year.

Even during the 2010-11 season after Dawkins scored over 20 against FSU followed by a couple 0 point performances, Coach K commented that he didn't know what was going on with Dawkins but no mention of grieving the death of his sister or any other excuse was made.

I'm afraid that if Dex doesn't learn to play more under control, he will reinjure his knee before mid-season. Every time I can remember when he was out on the break, he tried to outrun everyone to the rim rather than looking for a passing option. He was successful quite a bit doing it that way, but it sure put him at risk launching himself into the air at breakneck speed. Guess that's okay if you know how to land gracefully.

I believe last year when Dawkins sister died that was thereason given for his poor play. So, reason when it happens to a dukie, excuse when it happens to a tarheel.

I've stated since last season that UNC still has loads of talent. The guys that were hurt are going to show some people some great things. Duke will also be strong with an improved defense. Duke is always going to win a bunch. State has some solid experience + some strong freshmen. Never count out FSU and Miami. These two teams are well coached. State will have a tough challenge to live up to pre-season expectations.

I doubt we get 2010, we would have to get Drew II back and lose half the squad to injuries.
Another one being overlooked is PJ Hairston. PJ lost two relatives just a few weeks apart last season and his game took a nosedive. He will be much much better this season.

wmarti, that's my feeling too. That's why I think and what Roy has said, I'm more apprehensive about the success of this team. JMM is a talent, and he'll continue to improve and probably will be UNC's best player. Back to he point guard position. Marshall was a freshman, but he had time to learn the position behind LD. He wasn't forced into taking over the position right away. He also had some problems with his feet, stress fractures I think. There could be a problem with his not having enought time to learn the players or the offense and defense. I go back to Strickland and his injury and the fact that he's not a natural point guard. I guess Carolina has someone on the blue squad that can fill in, if needed. I would like to have seen Roy recruit another point guard along with Paige. The fact that he didn't or wasn't able to worries me some. I'm optimistic about the team, but like you cautious.

Pack-o-lips...gonna need a link for that

    To Cuss' point:

We just don't know what we're going to get with this UNC team. If everyone steps up, James plays like the gigantic kid he is...then this season could be very '06 like. OTOH, we could be more like the '10 team, God forbid.

It's going to be very interesting to see. Another thing is JMM. How will he respond to being the #1 option every night and seeing defenses schemed to stop him. We will see.

I guess cautious optimism is how I feel right now...but bracing for some serious bumps in the road.

Gary Parrish is a true inspiration - it's heartwarming to know someone who is borderline mentally disabled (IQ in 80s-90s) has a chance of finding gainful employment outside of food service or prostitution. I guess the recession has finally ended. His story should encourage all the "handi-capable" youngsters out there with dreams of going to Kerlina to major in business, communications, or humanities.

It hurt for one recruiting class but I believe that is going to fade.

Paige is a much better shooter and better overall athlete than KM. KM was a freshman as well when he was forced to take over mid season with very little on court time. At least Paige gets to take his lumps OOC.

I'll say it right now, they are not going to beat a #1 Indiana team with all 5 starters at Indiana. I am just hoping they can keep it close and learn from it.
That tough schedule should help them come tourney time.

Gary Parrish also says UCLA coach Ben Howland is not only the best game coach but the best combination recruiter/coach in all of college basketball.

I suspect that last part of that sentence will upset "some" posters here, even more than they've been upset the past couple of weeks with their teams' football outcomes.

    (And that's pretty dadblamed upset.)

    Mehh...

Dex says he is 96% recovered - probably not that far, but he'll have time to get there before conference play kicks in.

How many teams can go much further than 2-deep at the PG position? Take a look at the wolffies and the "what if's" if Brown or Lewis go down. And dook's PG's...not a strength.

That said, injuries can be game/season changers...no one understands that more than a long-time Heel fan. UNC, if they remain healthy, will be a much better team in February '13 than they will be in November '12. Not sure the Pack or Devils will be able to say the same.

Looking down the road a bit further, there is concern, but we'll have to see how the youngsters turn out. Who knows...xfers and juco players seem to be playing a bigger factor due to the 1 and done.

Just what you and I discussed. First year for the Pack as one of the top teams to beat. Thats a heavy burden, ask Roy and K. The coaching staff has never been here before either. That spells growing pains. They will do well, but will lose games that will drive you crazy because you know they should'nt have. Welcome to being a frontrunner for the first time in forever.

Paige is a freshman and Strickland has not recovered from his injury. An injury like his may take over a year to recover from and some never do. What then, who runs the point without those two? Carolina every year has injuries, more than their share. There's not much depth inside, with experience. State and Duke both are loaded at every position. Coach Williams said this team will have to play up to their potential to win games. He also said Paige was not the passer nor can he see the floor as good as Marshall. Coach Williams has had a problem recruiting a point guard for back up. With some luck he was able to pick up Stillman White. Desmond Hubert is OK but not a real scoring threat. Carolina will struggle this year and unless Roy can recruit better, we're going to have more trouble in years to come. I believe the scandal at UNC has hurt the basketball team more than the football team. With new academic standards coming, we are in for some down years. Holden Thorpe has decided the athletic department needs to take all the blame for the academic problems at UNC. Thanks, Holden.

I don't know how good/bad Marcus Paige is, but I do remember Strick handling the PG position really well, especially considering that's not his natural position. I agree there will be some bumps - and bruises - but Carolina does have talent, and don't forget about HOF Coach Roy.

I keep thinking of how KM blossomed when Drew left mid season. Hopefully the young guy gets the feel of things quickly this season, though there will be some early bumps against teams like Indiana. Their first real test will probably be at Long Beach State.

I agree with, what I perceive, is their logic. UNC is used to being high in the standings. State is not. I wonder if the pressure of being picked so high will hurt State and cause them to lose focus....and games.

  • kato_karma.v3 Nov 5, 2012

And people seem to forget that Strickland has logged a lot of minutes at PG. No, he is not a natural there, but more than adequate given his experience. If/when he takes point, the Heels can still put plenty of talent at the 2 and 3 positions (McDonald, Bullock, Hairston).
