CBS Sports: UNC, Not State favorite in the ACC
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/blog/eye-on-college-basketball/20836904/college-basketball-previews-nc-state-favored-by-others-but-not-us-in-accInteresting opinion:
NC State is actually the pick by most, and that's fine. There's nothing crazy about that. But I like the Tar Heels by the slimmest of margins because I simply trust them more than I trust the Wolfpack -- a team that, for all its postseason success, only did enough last regular season to earn an 11 seed in the Field of 68. Yes, I'm concerned that UNC lost so much and will rely on a freshman point guard in Marcus Paige. But there's still plenty of talent in Chapel Hill -- enough to hang another banner.

And people seem to forget that Strickland has logged a lot of minutes at PG. No, he is not a natural there, but more than adequate given his experience. If/when he takes point, the Heels can still put plenty of talent at the 2 and 3 positions (McDonald, Bullock, Hairston).

I agree with, what I perceive, is their logic. UNC is used to being high in the standings. State is not. I wonder if the pressure of being picked so high will hurt State and cause them to lose focus....and games.

Well, you know what they say. You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose. But, you can't pick your friend's nose. :)

I keep thinking of how KM blossomed when Drew left mid season. Hopefully the young guy gets the feel of things quickly this season, though there will be some early bumps against teams like Indiana. Their first real test will probably be at Long Beach State.

I don't know how good/bad Marcus Paige is, but I do remember Strick handling the PG position really well, especially considering that's not his natural position. I agree there will be some bumps - and bruises - but Carolina does have talent, and don't forget about HOF Coach Roy.
RE: CBS Sports: UNC, Not State favorite in the ACC
Paige is a freshman and Strickland has not recovered from his injury. An injury like his may take over a year to recover from and some never do. What then, who runs the point without those two? Carolina every year has injuries, more than their share. There's not much depth inside, with experience. State and Duke both are loaded at every position. Coach Williams said this team will have to play up to their potential to win games. He also said Paige was not the passer nor can he see the floor as good as Marshall. Coach Williams has had a problem recruiting a point guard for back up. With some luck he was able to pick up Stillman White. Desmond Hubert is OK but not a real scoring threat. Carolina will struggle this year and unless Roy can recruit better, we're going to have more trouble in years to come. I believe the scandal at UNC has hurt the basketball team more than the football team. With new academic standards coming, we are in for some down years. Holden Thorpe has decided the athletic department needs to take all the blame for the academic problems at UNC. Thanks, Holden.

Just what you and I discussed. First year for the Pack as one of the top teams to beat. Thats a heavy burden, ask Roy and K. The coaching staff has never been here before either. That spells growing pains. They will do well, but will lose games that will drive you crazy because you know they should'nt have. Welcome to being a frontrunner for the first time in forever.
