The gift that keeps on giving

RE: The gift that keeps on giving

wait, wait .wait... why now would the flagship want to compare? is'nt that the definition of flagship, "beyond comparison"?
- Posted by Fenrir

Another wusspacker who lacks basic reading comprehension skills (a common theme on this site). He didn't say anything about comparing the FLAGSHIP to the lessor schools in the system (because it is beyond comparison in that respect). He asked about comparing SAT scores of football players at any school with SAT scores of the overall student body at the same school.

RE: The gift that keeps on giving

Has any State fan or UNC, Alabama,Oklahoma, or any other major football playing school compared the average SAT score with overall student body SAT score? Well it doesn't compare. While the SAT scores are not be all end all it is a pretty fair indicator of academic readiness for college. The scores indicate the ballers are not college worthy students as a whole, yet every school has them and most stay academically eligible. Through the hard work and long hours in the library???

VERY well said.

RE: The gift that keeps on giving

(yawn) When Kane and the rest of the N&O staff get off their lazy a--es and start looking at all the major schools in the area (UNC, NCSU, Duke, WF, and ECU), then we might have a worthwhile story about the relationship of athletics to academics. Until then, this is still just another bunch of nothing. If you have attended any of these schools and didn't almost immediately realize upon arriving on campus that some football and basketball athletes were less prepared and took an easier road academically than non-athletes, YOU were really the one that wasn't smart enough to be there.

Question. Why do they need to look at all the other schools?

Do you have proof to share.

Just 35 years of casual observation, discussions with rational alums of some of those schools (at least one who attended both NCSU and UNC), and thinking about the issue. Can you offer anything that isn't tainted by your ABCer Rage Syndrome? I won't hold my breath.

Pretty much the same as you plus I had a sibling play D1 athletics at Duke.

Big difference is, do the police investigate all citizens or just the ones they catch?

By your logic, both you and I should be under investigation by the IRS or police for tax evasion or a bank robbery. Ecause someone we know or in our town has committed those crimes.

Nope. It's just that everybody has known for decades that revenue-generating athletes at big time schools can get by easier academically than other students. The N&O stories try to conflate the "easy classes" issue, which is widespread, with more serious corruption (the AFAM chair changing grades, and maybe treating athletes differently than other students in his department). If they are going to make a big deal out of the "easy classes" issue, they should do it in an even-handed way.
