Kane has revised the online N&O version of his article to omit about Willingham being asked to review a suspect paper and her reporting to Mercer that she believed the paper had been written by Wiley.

Wonder what prompted his changes. The initial version disproved its main allegation, that UNC had tolerated cheating and had not taken any action after Willingham had "reported" the cheating. We all know that actions were taken regarding Wiley and several players.

I have had little access to the internet this past week. Anyone see any signs of Kane "recanting" (not likely) or of a pushback by UNC or even Willingham?

Dan Kane dutifully left out the fact that in Walden's tenure he decreased the AFRI major among basketball players each year from 7 to 3 to 3 to 2 and finally to 1 when the last guy graduated in 2009. With no more AFRI majors at that point then it seems Walden mostly eradicated this issue 2 years prior when younger players were choosing majors. But Kane, through Willingham's claims, said that Walden's successor was "appalled" at the situation although no basketball players were AFRI majors when she came on board. And conveniently, Townsend is not on record. But who needs her when describing her feelings on the matter...

The Kane article is deliberately deceptive and has nothing that supports the headline that UNC tolerated cheating. The paper Willingham was asked to review and which Kane alleges was "tolerated" is the infamous one involving Wiley that was already being investigate and which resulted in expulsion for Honir Code violations.

I don't even care if it is bleacherreport... it's stops WELL SHY of what the guard would have you believe anyone's been proclaiming (State as NATIONAL CHAMPS).... it likely still remembers the MASSES that proclaimed the pansies- paper champs last year prior to late March, and.. well... let's just say.. it likely still burns inside because its team FAILED to live up to said hype, and is thus now.... left to project its feelings onto NCSU fans.

    embarrassing??

Not an expert, but if the basketball players took classes that were open to everyone at UNC-CH, and were graded to the same standard as non-athletes in the classes, there is probably no NCAA violation and almost certainly no legal issue. That doesn't make it good, but I am at least glad that the basketball program started cleaning its own nest in 2009. And I don't believe Roy is culpable at all.

  • seedofdoubt Nov 18, 2012

Guess someone will have to ask Mr. Walden if he told his good buddy Roy Williams what he was doing with Roy's players before 2009. He should Lawyer-Up first, I should think.

It would be hard to imagine that any coach didn't know what classes his players took or that players weren't academically able to perform college work. Also hard to imagine a coach wouldn't know this was going on and being covered up. Come clean huckleberry or are those two banners more important than your integrity?
