Swoffard should be slapped silly for letting Notre Dame in with the exception of the football program. Horrible.

You will notice that the B1G Ten's logo could be seen as containing a "16" in it.

  • Ken D. Nov 20, 2012

I don't expect the B1G Ten to stop at 14 teams. I think they will use the possibility of an invite to UNC and Duke as leverage to get Notre Dame to come in (along with Pitt, IMO).

If that happens, I could see FSU and Clemson going to the Big XII, and Miami and either VT or GT going to the SEC.

Asuming it's VT, that would still leave the ACC/Big East with a decent second tier football conference, on a par with the MWC. And it would make them the strongest basketball conference in the country - a seven or eight bid league almost every year. This is what would be left:

Seven ACC teams: UNC, Duke, State, Wake, GT,Virginia and BC.

Five Big East teams: Syracuse, UConn, Cincy, Louisville and Temple.

The obvious move is to put BC in a northern division.

I could live with that. But if the Big XII decides they also want to go to 16, we could have a major disaster on our hands. If Swofford manages to hold the ACC together with all this going on, he should be in line for a Nobel Prize, even if they have to create a new category.

Seriously, if Swofford is talking to Georgetown, the rest of the ACC AD's better be planning to impeach immediately.

I REALLY like the idea of adding Georgetown. Minus the substandard football program, they are an ACC school all the way. Actually, having a substandard football program fits right in with the ACC for the most part...

There's already chatter Swoff is going to pull Georgetown in as basketball only (unless they up their fball to Div 1). Bazinga, the DC market is back in and stronger (more follow Georgetown than do the Twerps up there). WV is an option, I don't think they will fare well in the B12 in any sport. Louisville would be a nice fit too. Seems the ACC takes from the "big east" whomever it desires.

I wouldn't be so quick to announce the demise of the ACC, either. Losing Maryland is NOT a death blow by any means. Even minus FSU, the ACC is very strong. We all know it's a basketball conference first and foremost. And I think if the SEC really coveted FSU that much, the Noles would have been gone this last go around. And really, just like Maryland, I wouldn't miss them much either.

but who's gonna foot the bill for all those road trips westward for your non-revenue sports?

They cut 7 non-revenue sports due to economics in the past year. With this move, they'll probably be able to bring them back.

Maryland. You cannot be serious! You let two newcomers, Pres. Loh and A.D. Anderson sway the B.O.Regents into this tripe! Won't mention the $50 mil exit fee, but who's gonna foot the bill for all those road trips westward for your non-revenue sports? Think you'll fill the arena when Iowa and Minnesota come calling? Right. Indiana for fball? Goodbye lacrosse team. Who 'ya gonna play in conference? (only 3 others play) And this just to get kicked into the cellar in football by those "monsters of the midway" up there.

Maryland (or Mr. Under Armour) is probably telling Bubba and Kevin White "Sure I'll hook you up with the B1G....just call Phil Knight at Nike and break that contract and sign this one and you might get to join us after we are settled in".

I would be amazed if they aren't already talking with the B1G Ten. If the league starts to implode it will be every man for himself, and you want to be the first in line for the B1G Ten. The alternatives would not sit well with either Duke or Carolina.

It's about TV markets. Maryland gives their conference the DC TV market. No one cares about Pittsburgh and Syracuse's TV markets. As for Notre Dame, they weren't committing to the ACC for football and after the season the ACC just showed, the current #1 in the BCS is certainly not going to be joining the ACC for football anytime in this generation.

Not sure the ACC is falling apart.......yet! Still have Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse on the way. There will be other teams lining up to join I hope. Maryland was a step above the bottom feeders like State so really not a big loss. Still, always tough to lose a charter member!

I see alot of the ACC teams trying to leave now. When the dominos start falling, Duke and UNC will be shopping themselves around like the other teams trying to avoid going down with the ship.

Beggars can't be choosers. The ACC is getting a taste of the same medicine the Big East got last year when Swofford took Pitt and Cuse away from them.

  • 4DukeTillDeath Nov 19, 2012

Its never good when a founding member leaves and this is just the tip of the iceberg. You can bet the house FSU and Clemson are leaving too. Will Miami and Ga Tech stay. We just lost the Baltimore/DC market and possibly a good portion of GA/FLA/SC market. If you think the ACC has little football appeal now just wait and see what several years from now is like.

And do we really want UConn to join? A bball team that couldn't hardly graduate a single player and is already on probation. I dunno, maybe Kevin Ollie turns that program around and cleans it up a bit. Louisville would be a good addition and believe it or not....even Kentucky if our league doesn't care about football anymore.

Yes, and when MD goes to the table to negotiate the $50 mil fee down with swofford, the Under Armour guy will be right there at the table to make sure the ACC lowers it to something closer to $20 mil.

Yup, the Under Armour owner (Maryland grad) can write the check for them. Maryland is an Under Armour school and with the stroke of the pen he can satisfy his personal desire for Maryland to do well and improve his company's position in the college athletics market. That would bring every penny right back to him.

prob means that the Big10 will pay the fee for them...the fee will be paid...just not out of pocket.

The Big Ten should hold off on Rutgers and see what happens to the ACC. Now that Maryland is gone, the Big 10 should see if FSU goes to the Big 12. If that happens then the ACC is officially falling apart. That's when the BIG 10 should swoop in and complete their 16 team conference. It could look like this:

Big Ten goes to 16 by taking: UVA, UNC and Duke.
SEC moves to 16 with: NC State and Va Tech.
Big 12 moves closer to 16 with: FSU, Clemson, Miami, Ga Tech and Notre Dame.
Big East and ACC combines their remainders: Wake Forest, BC, Syracuse, Pitt and the others.

That's definitely a lot of moving parts but it neatly satisfies each conferences TV market desires (except the Big East and ACC).

I'd take Louisville immediately if we can get them and hopefully get Notre Dame to be a full football member. That is the best outcome for a 14 member conference I can think of. Or I'd make a run at Vanderbilt but leaving the SEC probably would never happen no matter who you are.
