Serious question

What do UNC fans expect from this team, this season?

Hard to say. Second round of the NCAAT? Lots of ups and downs?

I know UNC fans are trying to be optimistic, as they should. I would.
But, they looked awful shaky out there. In order to be more competitive against top teams (btw, IU is a beast) they need to establish an identity. Find a floor general and follow their lead.
I read a lot about all the athletes UNC has. But, that gets you nowhere against athletic teams that play good team defense and are very disciplined. Examples: Indiana, Duke, Ohio St, Mich....
The only 2 players UNC had on the floor that looked like they were playing for their lives were Dexter Strickland and JMM.

Everyone else looked starstruck.

Very good observation and true to form. So the questions I have looking at the roster of players.
1. How many saw significant playing time last year when it counted ?
2. Who is the leader of this team ? What is their identity ?
3. Who is the go to guy in a must have situation ? Who is the second choice when other teams figure that out and take away the first option.
4. Are they basketball players or athletes playing basketball ?? Big difference.

So as a fan my expectation for UNC is to come up with answers to these questions by year's end. Not just mentally but see it in action on the court. It's one thing to be named team captain it another to act like one on the court.

Your number 4 got my attention. I think, right now, Carolina has a lot of athletes playing basketball. It IS a big difference.

Yup had a coach that use to say athletes run, jump, shoot ,defend all the essentials of the game.

Only basketball players could run with a purpose, jump with a purpose, shoot with a purpose, defend with a purpose. Basketball acumen and the understanding of why you were doing what you were doing would make you a better player. Looking forward to seeing this group of athletes grow into a title contending UNC basketball team. We have seen this before and the cycle continues...I'd say in 2 years if they stay together the core of this squad (Johnson, Paige, Hairston,Tokoto,James, Simmons,Hubert,Davis) will be mentioned as contenders for the title.
