I remember people referring to the center on that '77 team as "YonWolfSin" - a three headed monster if there ever was one. I also recall Chick Yonakor being nominated (by Dukies, of course) to the all-time All-ACC "ugly team". That was a low blow (picking such a team, not putting Yonakor on it) :).

That's some really cool footage. I almost forgot about the hand kept score board in the corner court. That was awesome. That was one bad azzz team.

A different era, but the 67-68 team of Grubar, Bunting, Clark, Miller, Scott, et al that lost to UCLA in the Finals, another injury doomed team (Grubar).

The 94-95 team should have won it all! Wallace, Stackhouse and Mcinnis were all ACC performers and Stackhouse and Wallace great NBA players!

83-84 was all about the late season injury to "The Jet".

2011-12 same as above except Marshall, Stricland, McDonald and Henson.

you just put up in one post all three things I was waiting to use when I started this thread. Those were the only close ones and the only way that it would be conceivable to me is if Wallace and Stackhouse had returned as you stated.

^^^ Yep, a lot of the guys used to hang out at The Square in Raleigh. A few years later Edward's Grocery and Zach's was a place you could always find a player or two. I remember Chuck Nevitt dancing on that tiny dance floor in Ed's.

It was always easy to talk to David Thompson. He was at The Square quite a bit and just as friendly as he could be. I remember telling him one night he should sign with the Hawks (he was drafted by the Nuggets and the Hawks). A week or so later he signed with the Nuggets. lol

Those were definitely very good "coulda/shoulda" UNC teams.

Dating myself, but went to class with some of the 76-77'ers. Ford was amazing and O'Koren was a super frosh...he and Yonaker were tight. Saw many of these guys regularly stepping out on Franklin Street...and Hillsborough Street (along with the NCSU crew).

All true. (Bruce Buckley and Steve Krafcisin LOL!) I remember them all.

(Fun dook trivia: It was known as "Rasheed Wallace Indoor Stadium" before it became "Hansbrough Indoor Stadium".)

    '93-'94 Eric Montross-Larry Davis-Jeff McInnis-Derrick Phelps-Donald Williams-Pearce Landry-Dante Calabria-Rasheed Wallace-Brian Reese-Kevin Salvadori-Jerry Stackhouse-Serge Zwikker

    '76-'77 Phil Ford-John Kuester-Dave Colescott-Dudley Bradley-Ged Doughton-Walter Davis-Randy Wiel-Woody Coley-Mike O'Koren-Tom Zaliagiris-Bruce Buckley-Jeff Wolf-John Virgil-Tom LaGarde-Rich Yonakor-Steve Krafcisin

Those two teams would have given the '84 team all it could handle and I'm not sure that the '94 team wouldn't beat 'em.

Check this out. In 1996, if Wallace and Stackhouse had returned for their Junior seasons the starters could have been Rasheed Wallace (C) Jerry Stackhouse and Antwan Jamison (F) and Vince Carter and either Jeff McInnis/Donald Williams (G). Think that team would have been any good?

Thank GOD it wasn't during the Big Dance at least, especially in the first round, or anything.

THAT would be humiliating, and apparently quite difficult to get over.

Yup -- best Heel team that didn't win it all.

Undefeated in ACC regular season. 28-3 overalll. The 3 losses all came after "The Jet" broke his wrist...by 1 point to Arkansas, 2 points to dook in ACC tourney, 4 points to Indiana.

You sure? Dang I'm getting old. But I do remember for a fact he was absolutely assaulted. 99.9 sure they tackled him on an easy fast break layup and he broke his wrist on the backboard. If I'm wrong on that one, I may need to start hitting the pipe again. LOL

Good one Hovis. I haven't thought about all of these names in a long time together. I was fortunate to meet Dean after a football game in Chapel Hill when Derrick Fenner set a rushing record at the time. Ol Dean was smoking a cig, and we talked a little in the parking lot. Still my all-time favorite coach.

That without a doubt was the best Carolina team that didn't win it all. When Kenny broke his wrist, I mean when he was assaulted, you just knew they would fall short. Such a shame. There is absolutely no doubt they would have won it had Kenny played in the big dance. Wasn't it the ACC tourney when he got injured?

Huh? What are you doing posting on this thread anyway? If you want to post the thread "States best roster that didn't win a championship" do it on the State forum. Then all you packers can answer "all of them for 30 years" and end the thread. We will not even have to interrupt.

Because no one asks why when you were never even close. No excuse.

A program that has lost as many titles due to injuries as UNC should take a hint and start recruiting better so they have depth in case of injury. Yes, I am being sarcastic about the "start recruiting better" part.
